This review really only reflects basic piercings since that's all I got done BUT I chose King Cobra over other local spots because they had the best reviews for everything overall! My experience with piercing shops/tattoo parlors is limited exclusively to Claire's as a child, so I wasn't sure what to expect and have always been a little intimated by those places because I'm not what I'd consider "cool" (lol). I had my original lobe piercings done at claire's and have always had issues with those piercings and decided if I ever wanted more, I'd go somewhere more professional. Hence the search for a place in State College... I suspected a lot of places would overcharge because it's a college town so I did a lot of googling, reading reviews, and asking friends for suggestions either way. I have a few friends who've gone to the other shop in town for piercings and were happy with it, but when I looked at some of the reviews I was more hesitant. I'm a weenie about this stuff and really wanted to get my lobes pierced again (new spot) and prefer not having weird issues with prices not being disclosed up front and uncomfortable/unwelcoming vibes. I ultimately decided on King Cobra because of the reviews, but when I stopped in today just to get a feel for their vibes and ask about pricing, they were super nice and answered all my questions about the cost and pain. Even though it was mostly an exploratory visit for info, they offered to fit me in then and there so I just went for it! I paid $60 total for the two lobes, jewelry cost included. I've been wanting these second piercings for a while and since it's spring break, I figured I may as well treat myself. Jake was very friendly, clean/hygienic and everything you'd hope from someone doing piercings. The actual piercing was much better than I thought it would be, very little pain and didn't take long at all. He explained the aftercare and also gave a printout of the directions. I am very very happy with the piercings and will probably go back to get the third lobe piercing once these have healed a little bit (and I can save up lol). read more

Everyone in the shop is always so friendly and it creates such a warm, inviting space. They always have the beesstttt music on which makes the experience so much sweeter! Mikey has done all five of mine and I don't see myself going to anyone else any time soon! He always gives me honest feedback about tattoo ideas and placement which I think is a great quality to have as a tattoo artist. Plus, I always feel like I'm talking to an old friend! Since COVID restrictions have been in place, I've gotten two tattoos here and they are doing a great job at distancing appointments, wearing masks, and sanitizing. I recently got my first three tattoos done here and I couldn't be happier. The penguin was a tribute to my father which made it even more meaningful when it was done perfectly. Timmy did all three, and was super professional, friendly, and fast. The shop is clean and a feast for the eyes. All the artists here have great flash and art covering the walls, and I've seen incredible work from each of them. I would be getting more from this shop if I weren't moving away soon. Terrible tattoo experience! My wife and I went to get simple tattoos - her a queen and myself a king chess piece. We didn't like the outcome after looking at them and decided to go back and ask for a fix. Tim gave terrible customer service. Grumbled a lot. Argued with us. Eventually filled the pieces in solid black. However, he ran really fast with his machine and pushed extremely hard!!! Now, my wife and I have two crappy crooked chess pieces with blown out perimeter lines. He prides himself on going really fast, but fast means heavy handed and leads to line blowouts. I would never recommend ANYONE go here. I'm posting a picture so others can see the work he did. The last photo is an update. It scabbed terrible regardless of washing with natural soap and keeping it moist for the first week. read more

Have you ever wanted to step back in time and have an experience from yesteryear? Well, going to Tattoo Marks II is just that. From the fashions the folks wear, to the museum quality tattoo guns and artifacts in the display case up front. This place is like a throwback to the days of Bowery Stan and the pre tattoo prohibition era in New York City. They even play the music of the old school legends of the business. I hadn't visited a tattoo shop for work of my own since 1993. I have had four tattoos in my life. So, after wondering on Timmytatts work on a social network, I was lured into their Tumblr and Facebook galleries. I was immediately floored by the style. Timmy and his brother lowercase_j do work beyond anything most of these modern "artists" do. Don't get me wrong. I believe they will do your boring portraits. They will make your lane scripts that you found on then interweb. They will even do work with that super lame college girl crap. But, honestly in my view, that work is well below their talent. These guys actually paint and draw most of their own flash. They are true artists and not just some lame tattoo guy that will make a unicorn, Freddy Krueger, or tribal bullshit on your body. These guys do the classic sailor tattoos. But they do them with the greatest of skill and art. The inks are high quality and the workmanship is top notch. For my work, I got one of Timmy's Eagles on my upper arm. I was schedule with lowercase_j expecting exactly what was on the flash but sort of hoping for j to add his own little flare to it. He did exactly that and I couldn't be happier. I plan to go back within the next year. There is the matter of the snake the eagle was locked in battle with. Need to add it. As long as this shop pumps out the same quality of work, I plan to continue my patronage. If you want a real tattoo, this is the only place to go anywhere in PA outside of Harrisburg, Philly, or Pittsburgh. The other shops just do the typical boring same old crap. read more

This place changed ownership, and is now owned by Tim who has been working in the space for quite a while. He is a wonderful tattooist with mumble something years of experience. He's probably been tattooing since you were in diapers. I decided I needed another tattoo and rang up in the middle of summer. Tim fit me in right away. He is amazing. He is very intuitive and focused, making sure he does the best job while also disarming any anxiety you might have by being such a happy guy. The experience was great too. The walls are covered with flash art, an impressive vintage flash collection and even velvet paintings! Lots of stuff to look at while the artist works. I think the plethora of visual mirth distracted me; the quick phrase he tattooed on my forearm hardly hurt at all! I have a few more tattoo ideas rattling around in my old brain and I'm looking forward to returning to this nice clean shop soon. read more

I went in to ask a question about my piercing. I needed help getting a captive bead piercing off... the dude looked at me like I was an idiot. (I was 100% willing to pay for a new ring there and pay for the service). The female tattoo artist that was in the shop was making weird faces at the guy I was talking to and laughing. I DONT HAVE MANY PIERCINGS. I'm not an expert on piercings... that's why I was trying to go to one. I got shamed for needing help. So I took my business else where and tipped them $50. They were actually helpful. The customer service and respect here is lacking. It doesn't matter how talented you are; if you don't have interpersonal and interpersonal skills, you will lose business. *update: I was told that they don't have a female artist and I have the wrong place. There was some chick there. Maybe she wasn't an artist but I KNOW this was the place. read more

Don't go here if you have darker skin. I'm Indian American, medium brown complexion. I asked for a color tattoo with dark pink. They said the color may not be exactly as I wanted. I thought it may be a bit lighter or off, but I could deal. It came out bright orange. I asked for a color correction. They should have apologized and offered to redo it for free. Instead, they told me they had "given me a warning" and they would have to charge me for the correction. I would not advise going to a shop that doesn't acknowledge their mistake and fix their work. I suspect they have limited experience tattooing brown skin - which is their problem, not mine. read more

Tim cleaned up and colored some of my old stuff and Mikey's been working on me for at least a year now, coloring more stuff, and adding a few tatts along the way. Place is horrible to customers. The tattoo GUY I had was rude, and the price is determined by how much the cashier likes it.

These guys like to joke around, and I assure you they are clean, professional and are quintessential in traditional style, with heavy Sailor influence. They are also quite capable of melding other styles in with what they do best. The Flash and books are representative of their work in general, and so long as you aren't obstinate in how they should make your tattoo look, you are in good hands. Let them be artists. Sometimes people will think they are literally lying when in all actuality they are just messing around. For instance, if they were to say that young people have never done DIY tattoos, how would anyone ever take this seriously? These guys are professionals and I assure you, know the history of Sailor Tattoos. If they told you Cuban Son is totally disassociated from Salsa, they would be playing around with you as well. As for the "gender neutral restroom" they have a unisex, so I suppose that qualifies. And remember, if obtaining a piercing, there is no "gay" side. read more

If you've had a different experience, it's likely because you don't understand how to act in a tattoo shop environment. Went in today to have a piercing done. I had walked by the place all the time, but this was my first time going in. The place is so nice and clean with that awesome vintage feel to it in the style and setting. The music was even a nice old blues tunes, but not cranked up too loud. The gentleman who did my piercing was very nice and explained to me everything he was doing and even chatted with my partner and I to take my mind off the piercing. The process itself was faster then I expected and He then instructed me on the aftercare along with where I can purchase the saline solution to soak the piercing. The price was very reasonable, and was less then what I thought it would be from doing research to get an estimate. I would highly recommend this place for piercings. read more

Ok, so I'm by no means a connoisseur of tattoo shops, but I just got my first one here and it was excellent. The experience was awesomely unique, just what you'd imagine in the sort of classic American-style tattoo parlors of earlier days. The staff was really cool and understanding with the fact that it was my first time getting inked. They explained everything to me and made the whole process really easy. They gave me a hand with my design and helped me tweak it to make for maximum preservation of the image. The place was very clean and professional, but at the same time laid-back and relaxing. Timmy did all the work on me, and he was fantastic. Steady hand, very chill dude. When it was over, the image was crisp and beautifully done. This is the only place I will get tattooed. I'm no tattoo expert, but I know these guys are the best around if you want a traditional style tattoo. I only have six so far but plan on getting many more. I've been tattooed by them all; Tim, Justin, and Jake. They're all amazing artists, and great to talk to when in the shop. Jake also did a set of piercings on me about 5 years ago that I loved & they turned out nicely while I had them in. Definitely go to King Kobra! I've never been to a tattoo shop before and was obviously a little cautious when I went in and looked around. There was no need to be concerned, the gentleman who helped me out walked me through every step of my piercings (I got my daith, part of my cartilage pierced) and made sure I was comfortable with everything as we went along. It was as painless and quick as possible but what impressed me the most was how he handled my fears! They are also super hygienic and made sure everything was sterile before doing anything.
