The King & Queen on Marlborough Place in Brighton is a traditional public house built on the foundations of a twelfth century farmhouse serving coffee, beers and cocktails with various specials, local, wider domestic and imported. They also have a menu of great looking pub fare, although I didn't sample their wares. It has been rebuilt a couple of times over the years and opened in its current form in the 1920s. The interior decor is where old meets new with traditional stained glass, coats of arms, leather couches, low and high top tables and a well stocked bar area. There's also a more modern Pit Stop area up a rounded stair overlooking the main pub floor. The area is spacious and comfortable with several televisions playing football matches and chill musical ambiance. The bartenders are attentive and always ready to answer your questions, make recommendations, and tell you the local history, whether about local brewery Harvey's in Lewes, or the evolution of the grounds and buildings. There are also several gaming machines, a pinball, and a pool table. If you're looking for a historic pub to relax and recharge, this is the place to be. read more

I visited King & Queen while visiting Brighton on vacation. We stumbled upon the pub, and the outside appearance encouraged us to take a look. We were really impressed once we peeked inside, so we stayed for a couple drinks. The decor is amazing. There's a ton of history to the venue that others have described in their reviews, and there is a plaque on the wall that describes it all. I didn't go upstairs, but I did see the outdoor seating area, which was quite nice. The toilets were also very clean and well-maintained. I don't consider the place grimy as others have described it. I tried the Three Hop, which I really enjoyed! My husband had something else... I can't remember but we were satisfied with the options, and the prices, especially during happy hour. Overall, I would go back to King & Queen next time we're in Brighton. Oh, as U.S. visitors, we were also tickled by the fact that we could take our beers outside in plastic cups to sit and enjoy them in the park!! read more

This was our first stop during a pub crawl and it was a pretty awesome place to start the night. It was during World Cup season and Spain had just won a big game so all the Spaniards in Brighton were out celebrating and the atmosphere was ecstatic! I tried my first cup of Pimms there, too and it made me fall in love with the drink. Drinks are very cheap, too. There is karaoke all night and it is fun to go up with a big group and blast your favorite karaoke jam. The bar also has an outdoor patio that is less noisy so you can hold conversation with your friends. Overall, this is a great and fun dive bar. Love the medieval theme. read more

We Americans get many things from our European forefathers... but who'da thunk that the original layout for Medieval Times could be found right here in Brighton? Yes, America's favourite trashy expedition where the fantasy of jousting and eating come together in a glorious... oh, who am I kidding? This place was so tacky it hurt. And it knew it. And I think it kinda liked it. That said, if you want to watch the football, and by watch I mean swim in a sea of drunken rugby jersey wearing, collar popping, erm, what's the word I'm looking for here... something that rhymes with swoosh lags, then this is your spot. I can't bring myself to deploy the 1-star bomb simply because I got drunk for less than nothing and played pool and foosball all night with some mates visiting from - you guessed it -Texas. While we're making offensive stereotypes here, I'll assume they liked the "bigger is better" thing King & Queen had going on. read more

I was invited to a colleague's leaving do that was held in a function room upstairs. The bar was cash only but good thing I work with doctors that bung some money for everybody's drinks! Glad to see we don't have to go far for the loo too as there is one there. I had plenty of fun that night! The girls have Spotify plugged into the PA. Before this occassion, the last time I went here was when they used to serve snakebites. Showing my age? Not entirely sure what has changed. Today has been terrible. The weather has been simply awful, with prolonged torrential rain throughout the Brighton area. Bearing in mind that when I left home this morning it had seemed quite sunny, and bearing in mind that, as a consequence, I'd decided to dress myself up in nothing more than a small t-shirt and a pair of shorts, and so the subsequent downpour naturally had a rather negative effect on my overall mood, not to mention the dryness of my clothes. Despite this, the King and Queen managed to function as my saviour in both respects, not only lighting up my day, but serving as a haven protecting me from further dampness. The interior is very atmospheric, with a pleasant vibe and decor. The service is friendly, and the alcohol selection and price is reasonable. Furthermore, the food here is very good, and I particular recommend the sausage and mash. You'll also find numerous fruit machines, a quiz machine, and a snooker table to entertain you. This is also used as a venue for showing live sporting events. read more

If your a football fan and like me, enjoy a pint with the match then the King and Queen is the place to be on match days. There are boards outside listing matches shown which avoids awkward exchanges with bar staff, and the lengthy bar is usually capable of coping with demand at half time...more than I can say for Walkabout! However K & Q is not a one trick pony and shouldn't be over looked as a handy meeting point for warm up drinks, prices are average and the unique decor creates a cosy atmosphere. read more

Oh those summer Tuesday nights at King&Queen. Nothing beats hanging with friends and just enjoying the karaoke entertainment and even embarrassing yourself every so often with your own numbers. Everyone can just relax here and hangout with their beer in hand :). It's a pretty big pub though. Luckily I haven't seen it empty since I've really only gone on the karaoke nights, but I imagine it must look quite empty with so much space on less busier nights. From the outside, I can see why this pub appeals, it looks old and speaks to a time of oldy-wordly English Tudor villages. In short, it ticks all the right boxes for tourists trying to squeeze a village experience into their city stay! Inside, this place is HUGE and admittedly there is some charm in the split-level seating and exposed beams and wooden decor. However, what looks like it would be a cosy, atmospheric country pub with a roaring fire and hearty British pub lunches, is most often found to be quite the opposite. Visit during the week and you might stumble into an under-populated karaoke night. Venture in on a weekend day and you will most likely find the pub packed to the rafters with football fans downing pints of Fosters, whilst they howl and gesture at the giant sports screens. If you're unlucky enough to find yourself in the King and Queen on a weekend evening, I recommend you leave sharpish! What is normally an inoffensive, albeit atmosphere depraved pub, becomes something of a circus. Everytime I walk past at night, dubious-looking characters are loitering outside and paraletically drunk people are being chucked out. I have a soft spot for this place as we used to drink there when we were young and always managed to get served there! It has got a bit of a bad reputation as a chavs pub but I've never had any trouble at all in there. Its a beautiful old building with a huge courtyard where you can sit outside and have a smoke. Its a huge building inside so perfect for large groups and has plenty of large TVs for the football games. The staff have always been friendly enough to me and seem to keep their calm even when its rammed. Food wise, I'd just stick to the sandwiches though. read more

A huge place, that can be either great or irritating, depending on when you visit. The inside is cavernous, with the main area downstairs and a galleried upper floor which leads to futher seating areas. It's like a medieaval banquetting hall that decided not to fall down, but to morph into a new and more modern form. Outside is a small courtyard garden, which in summer sometimes hosts barbeques. The place can however feel a bit tacky, and very busy, with quite a young clientele. It's legendary as a good place to watch football, thanks to the sheer size of the place. read more

As far as actual venues go, the King and Queen is quite cool. I really like the sheer grandeur of it. Carpeted stairways and multiple rooms. Something that you can't carpet over though is the clientele. There is often a heavy atmosphere in here of a weekend, and have felt evil eyes looking upon with a certain amount of distain..not really a place for me. From the outside, the King and Queen is immediately noticeable; an 18th century exterior is continued inside by a bar designed in Georgian style. Outside is in keeping with the period; there is large paved smoking area and courtyard. This is one of the better places to watch live sport, they have a number of TV's and a giant projector screen on offer. The King and Queen offer more than most pubs; as well as two English pool tables, you can also find table football and regular quiz nights. Drinks are cheap, and you can regularly get offers on both drink and food. This is a popular pub among locals and students, largely because of the sports on offer. It's also worth mentioning that they also have an extensive cocktail and shooter menu. read more

The King and Queen seem to do everything by huge margins, but only ever reach a middle ground because of it: it's absolutely massive, but the local clientele is awful. It shows all of the sports games on massive screens, but only seems to serve a handful of beers. I don't quite understand why and how it is the way it is, but I know I've yet to have a good night in here. Still, I like the size, I just wish the crowd where quieter, the music was quieter, and the selection and prices were better. In a bar of this size, you'd think there'd be more variety. It is big enough to seat hundreds (it is really massive), and yet everyone seems to be a lager-swilling lout: lots of football and karaoke seem to be the common nights here. Also, how can a bar that big only serve a collection of lagers on tap, and fewer spirits, and a couple of different ales and wines? It just doesn't make sense to me. I suppose the King and Queen have made their bed and are lying in it quite contentedly, but surely they realise they've alienated anyone apart from that crowd? I completely understand that the King and Queen have to play to their audience, I just wish it was an audience I could be happy in. It's an amazing place, so big and inviting, that it's strange to think how little it has to offer inside. You'd be forgiven for thinking this was some kind of period reenactment HQ, its vast turrets more like a castle than a ye olde pub. Sneer all you like though, but mock Tudor this ain't. Built in 1779 as a farmhouse, the interior is just as grand, if a little gaudy. You'd think it would be difficult to get make the many artefacts look numerous in such a big space, but there's barely anywhere to put them all. Wooden ships, framed maps, tankards - you've seen it all, just times it by 20. Clientele-wise this is primarily a footie and Carling crowd, though if you're a poor student you'll find it hard to resist the prices (as little as £1.50 a pint), plus there's more than enough space for everyone get along. read more

If I'm being honest, I have mixed feelings about this pub. At a first glance and definitely from the outside, it looks like it could be a cosy, fun and laid back pub with a bit of character. When you get inside however, it's so huge you don't really get any kind of vibe from it. The decor isn't anything special either... It can be quite a fun place to go if you want to catch up with friends, and they have live bands playing sometimes, however I personally have never heard anyone play that I can say I enjoyed the sound of - but that might just me! The drinks are fairly priced and the bar staff are all very friendly. I once got asked out by one of the barman! If you're in a large group with some friends it can be a fun place to chill with a few drinks, but in all honesty there are a lot of pubs that have such a better atmosphere. read more

Looking old and grand, with a Tudor-esque decor inside and out, the King and Queen is a vast and welcoming medieval drinking hole, decked out with wood panelled walls, ridiculously high beamed ceilings and massive wooden spiral staircases with balconies. It was built in 1779 as an old farmhouse and was named to honour King George III. It has an upstairs function room with its own bar for private parties, as well as a huge outside courtyard with plenty of seating and heated areas. Great for big groups as it's got a load of big tables, including huge round ones so you can group together like knights of the round table and drown out the week's sorrows with plenty of beer and food. The food's cheap too, and the menu hosts traditional pub-grub favourites such as BBQ chicken melt (my one and only true love when scoffing in pubs), fish and chips, sausage and mash, as well as paninis and lighter snacks to share. Nothing costs more than a fiver. We've started many big nights here and have always stayed longer than planned, not only for the luxurious settings, but the cheery-cheap prices on both drinks and food. read more

Upon arriving a friend commented that it had a "whiff of the BNP" about it, and I can't think of a way to phrase it better. On the plus side, it is certainly a large establishment (is that a plus?) and has a large beer garden, but other than that, it's a pretty tacky place full of the sort of people you would usually leave a place to avoid. Very large and popular pub on the main A23 into town. What you think of this pub is really determined by what you actually want out of a pub. If you like massive screens showing football, fruit machines to keep you occupied, and pool tables and loud music when it's finished,then you've hit the jackpot. If a chilled night, with a laid back vibe and good food is your bag, then give this place a wide berth. The actual interior has a lot of character, as doesa the old courtyard. The toilets however are pretty rank. I've used this pub to meet up with a large group of friends before heading off somewhere else or to watch footy. A great pub for watching sport, two massive projectors and lots of tvs dotted around as well. Not overly expensive and a massive bear garden for those that smoke. Clientele is a by hit and miss and the staff can be slow when it's busy. Would only really go to this pub to watch the football as the atmosphere can be great. read more

This pub is certainly majestic in size. The outside is pretty impressive and you do feel as if you should be sporting medieval garb in order to enter. You envisage yourself sitting around a huge table with many merry men, swigging grog and eating a whole pig. After dinner you just have time to defile a maiden before you go off and pillage a village! If this is your vision, then when you actually enter the King & Queen you might be slightly disappointed! However, fear not, it's a pretty nice pub: huge, with a decent beer garden. There are some good drinks offers and big screen sports events. The King and Queen is a pretty average pub in a pretty remarkable premises. It has a big medieval theme park feel about it with décor that looks like it could really be medieval and stuff that looks like theatre props. It's crowning glory is probably the function room which has a bountiful dancefloor and brilliantly high ceiling, great for birthdays bashes, work doo's and anniversary affairs. This pub looks like a London City pub and feels like the kind of place men and women frequent after a hard slog at the office, it's often quite loud and chatty to this effect, with people chugging down beer and wine and letting off some steam. read more

My family organised a surprise party for me, the venue was nice. Toilets were quite bad, the food we ordered as part of the buffet was burnt. That was fine we enjoyed ourselves but the rudeness of the bouncers ruined our night. They didnt even give us time to pack up our stuff just started pushing us out, extremely rude. The King and Queen (also known as Ye Olde King and Queen and The King and Queen Hotel) is a pub in the seaside resort of , of the city of Brighton and Hove. The present building, a "striking" architectural "pantomime" by the prolific local firm Clayton & Black, dates from the 1930s, but a pub of this name has stood on the site since 1779--making it one of the first developments beyond the boundaries of the ancient village. This 18th-century pub was, in turn, converted from a former farmhouse. Built using materials characteristic of 16th-century Vernacular architecture, the pub is in the Mock Tudor style and has a wide range of extravagant decorative features inside and outside--contrasting with the simple design of the neighbouring offices at 20-22 Marlborough Place, designed a year later. English Heritage has listed the pub at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance. I went there for my nieces 21st birthday party it was extremely noisy downstairs but hardly surprising seeing as Brighton had just won a game so it was full of extremely happy fans . We were a group of 4. A portion served was half of the size that a main course would normally be. The chef wanted to do more pasta no quibble but the manager would not let him. The meal was 7:00 pm roughly 8/7/16. No money given back to make up for it and the food had to be paid for beforehand. read more

As you enter the King and Queen the grandeur and sheer size of the place is instantly makes an impact. The King and Queen cover all the major sports events on its two large screens and surround televisions. According to the pub's official website, www.thekingandqueen.co.uk, the pub is 'Brighton's busiest sports that has never been bettered', and I have to say that the atmosphere for the Carling Cup Final was well and truly charged. If you dare venture upstairs for a game of pool, beware of the locals, you can cut the tension with a knife. But, to be fair, there's always a 'geezer' mob in a pub like this. The King and Queen stage a variety of type of live music including its Battle of the Bands event which is currently ongoing with the next round occurring on the 7th March. A unique sound is created through the acoustics of the old building which really creates a sense of intimacy. This is instantly diminished on one of the pubs karaoke nights, when there is bound to be a pre-paralytic group of young women wailing like a group of stray cats to the spice girls. Despite the cliental, I have to admit, that I have never had a bad night in The King and Queen; whatever type of night I am looking for. Reasonable prices, student nights, attractive aesthetics; what more could you want. read more
