The place is round in shape, so from the front of the upstairs, you can look over the railing down onto the madness below. There is no pretension or trendiness about this place- it is a bold, busy pub to get drunk in and eat some cheap food. However, there is nothing wrong with that, and it can be surprisingly relaxing in the quieter daytimes.

There's also a more modern Pit Stop area up a rounded stair overlooking the main pub floor. The area is spacious and comfortable with several televisions playing football matches and chill musical ambiance. The bartenders are attentive and always ready to answer your questions, make recommendations, and tell you the local history, whether about local brewery Harvey's in Lewes, or the evolution of the grounds and buildings. There are also several gaming machines, a pinball, and a pool table. If you're looking for a historic pub to relax and recharge, this is the place to be.

However, if you want a pint and a chat with the friendly bar staff, this is the place to go. It's a long, thin place. The main seating area is at the front, and although traditional in feel is still light and airy. The primary attraction for me though is the sheltered, sunny garden at the back. Medusa is hard to define, as it mixes much of the pub atmosphere with more of a wine-bar-chill-out seating arrangement and the like. This is a great place to perch on a cushion and let the world spin by; not exactly a rarity in Brighton, but certainly in this area. If you're looking for a good chill-out place in the area, Medusa may be a great place for you to sit: it is just worth remembering that the crowd that like this area will likely make this place less relaxed later into the evening.

Had the misfortune to have an encounter with the most obnoxious barmaid I have ever experienced…read morethis afternoon. Having ordered a pint of Harvey's Best and been served barely three quarters of a pint, I politely asked for it to be topped up. Said lady, who I assume from the way she conducted herself has a role in running the establishment, arrogantly held the glass under the tap and nudged the lever, sarcastically telling me that it should be served with a 5 percent head. When I asked where it said that, she told me that it was 'on their website'. I took a photograph of the pint and told her that I would send it to Harvey's for their opinion, whereupon she suggested that I had taken a sip out of it. The only saving grace was that when the wretched woman sauntered off into the back of the pub I leant over the bar and refilled my glass. Childish, I know, but I have never experienced such disgraceful service. Pubs are closing every week in this country and it is episodes like this that contribute.

Everything from meatball subs to 10oz ribeye steaks were on there for more than half the price of most pubs which tells me its probably not organically sourced from local farms but sourced by a lorry in a cash and carry outlet. It also has a beer garden which is ok. For some people not having sky television in a pub is a big let down but it does stop people from just watching the television. This makes it quite a sociable pub to go to The prices are rock bottom for drinks which is always a bonus whilst the food is good value for money. The area around is good and with the dog stadium a 10 minute walk away you could easily start here then go there after. The feel is good and local residents are pretty good. Early afternoon the 'punters' are the guys that come in from work and just want a quiet drink so if you want it to be more lively then go early evening. However, when it's quiet it doesn't feel empty so in my personal opinion I do not mind being in there at that time. I have given it 3 stars because its not the best pub ever but would be worth 4 stars if it had the odd night with something different going on.

We had a roast yesterday and it was delicious - lots of vegetables, loads of meat and a nice option for my vegetarian husband.
