Roast pork
Georgina W.

A visit for Sunday lunch is a must!!!! We ordered the black pudding scotch egg and sausage roll to share as a starter between three people and I had the roast pork for my main. The portions were huge and super tasty. There was a slight mix up with our order, which to be honest we wouldn't have known about if the staff hadn't apologised and offered us free drinks. They were so helpful and friendly, we would have forgiven them anything! Delicious and great value for money.

Allegedly one of the oldest pubs in Brighton, The Cricketers oozes pure charm. There's no plasma TV screens belting out football or reality TV, there's just cosy red velvet seats and an old fashioned bar serving good quality spirits, beers and bottles of wine. In fact, I've spent dozens of evenings here catching up with friends over a bottle (or two) of great Australian Shiraz. As well as the cosy areas tucked around the main bar, there's a more formal dining area and bar open for lunch and evening meals upstairs and a courtyard area which seats larger groups. They serve meals in the latter and a range of bar snacks, like chips and dips, in the main bar. It's also two mins from Jamie's Italian, Food for Friends, Zizzi, Cafe Rouge and Pizza Express - so a great place to pop in for a drink pre or post-dinner. No wonder Graham Greene set part of Brighton Rock here!

I've only been to this pub a few times, but each one has ended in me leaving with a smile on my face. This is very much a cosy, local pub - with warm and rich decor and a dimly lit interior. The pub is deceptively large actually, stretching back far, with a rooms off rooms and a hidden bar right at the bar. They also have a nice outdoor seating area, right in the middle of the bustling south laines, which is perfect for people watching. The drinks are pretty standard pub fare here, I'd say, so no complaints there! The staff, too, are lovely and accommodating. They often have live music playing, which is wonderful and adds a great atmosphere to the place. This is a great spot to just chill with a pint and catch up with some mates. If you're after a relaxed and comfortable vibe, in the very heart of town - this is for you!

Looks nice inside, particularly within the courtyard, where we managed to find a spot. The beer choice was a bit boring though, best I could find was a Caledonian non-Deuchars.

Attractive pub in the Lanes area of Brighton dating from 16th Century. Featured in Brighton Rock by Graham Greene, who's said to have written parts of the novel here. Good real ale. This is a largish pub, popular with tourists and day trippers. It's arranged over two floors, with a bar on each floor. The ground floor has two distinct areas: the main bar area, which gets packed during the day at weekends, and a dining area one end of which is open to the elements. The ladies' toilet is in the main bar area, and the gents' is in the dining area. The entire upstairs floor is the Greene Room (which is actually three rooms with interconnecting doors). This area has quite a different feel from the downstairs areas. For a start, it's never as busy as downstairs (possibly because casual visitors don't realise it's there), and is generally quieter. Also, it's decorated differently (light greens, creams and browns, if I remember correctly), and the seating is better (mostly armchairs). The upstairs bar usually only has one person serving. There are toilets in the upstairs area as well as downstairs. Note: there are no real ales upstairs so you have to get it at the main ground floor bar. There are various Graham Greene memorabilia on the walls. Upstairs serves as a very good function room. The real ale is consistently good I've been here maybe 30-40 times and never had a duff pint. Typically they have Broadside, Pride, Harveys and Speckled Hen. However, drinking here is expensive: Pride is £3.20, and Guinness £3.50 (prices as at March 2008). I have heard that the food is very good, but I haven't tried it myself apart from a baguette or something a few years ago. The staff are very professional. The pub is part of the Golden Lion pub chain. However, I'm only giving four stars because the prices are a little excessive.

A proper local pub which me and my friends on our girlie weekend were hoping to find. This little gem is nestled in the lanes and has a proper local feel. We stood out more than a lamb chop in a plate of sushi but we still had a great time. Sampled the local beer and loved the cheap prices. We were also very impressed by the bed pans used as decoration? What's that about? The tables and chairs are cleverly positioned so everyone gets a seat and a natter. Be sure to pop in for a cheeky pint.

The ladies at the bar were very nice and gave us half price tickets to a local show! The atmosphere was old school pub feel and a very cool experience. I think this is as old pub feel in England as you are going to get!! Coming back again for sure.

Great fish and chips, the best I've had so far in England. Beautiful ambiance and friendly staff! Apple cider was good and the wine was generously served!

Reputed to be Brighton's smallest pub, it has two small rooms either side of a central bar, serving a couple of real ales, and the usual range of lagers, wines and spirits. The decor is plush and cosy - rather like the inside of a theatre. This is appropriate, as the walls are covered with hundreds of old theatre posters and signed photos of theatre performers. (Or should that be 'artistes'?) It's reputed that Laurence Olivier (among others) once drank here. The staff are very friendly, and it attracts a loyal following of (mostly) gay men, although it's not exclusively gay. A perfect spot to escape from the winter gales on Brighton sea-front.

The seats are of faded pinkish velvet and the air somehow stuffy as though thick with back stage stories from days that have long since come to pass. It's not going to be everybody's cup of tea, but if you've ever watched the fast show's Arthur Atkinson story and aside from the comedy been taken in by the romance of 1950's theatre this place is well worth a trip. The drinks selection's not bad either it has the usual standards and last trip a made there I enjoyed some Harveys Sussex best and marvelled with complete ignorance at the signed monochrome photos across the back wall.

I hate leaving bad reviews but I am worried someone might DIE here…read more I ordered a whisky and after sitting down noticed it had fruit flies in it. I went back to the bartender and he apologized and then offered me another drink. I looked at multiple bottles and ALL of them had flies. I said they needed to throw them away and I would just take a beer. He gave me a beer free and then went outside to hang with my friend. I then watched him pour the bottles through a strainer and then back into the bottles. Not only did they never rinse the glass but didn't rinse the strainer that had the flies in it. So - Do NOT drink any whisky in this place. In fact don't drink any hard liquor in this place. Other bottles had flies but didn't see them "recycling" them. Bartender was very nice and amicable but this place should be shut down. Someone will get sick. No idea if they clean their beer lines or not but just stay away.

I went here after seeing Kings of Leon and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds earlier this year and noticed lots of other people from the shows wander in. There's clusters of wooden chairs and tables and a window seat where you can watch the world go by or strike up conversations with - equally intoxicated - locals.

I let Cat, the booking manager, know the situation, and she was a wizard at making sure everyone had the food that they ordered. We had a room upstairs to ourselves, and everyone loved the food and service. We all got what we had pre-ordered with Cat, and the people who didn't preorder were proffered dinner in a timely fashion. The food was great! I got the tomato tart and the beef cheek. I had never had a tomato tart before but really enjoyed it, and I thought the beef cheek was very tender. Other people raved about the fries. There were lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Drinks were good! I had a cocktail called "The Bees Knees," which I really liked. There are plenty of beers on tap, and the waitstaff gets around to bar belly-uppers quickly. The space is amazing. There's a second story, rooftop courtyard, and a large downstairs area for dancing, live music, picture taking, and a brewery/beer store attached. As someone who loves lots of diversions and micro-vibes within a bar, I really enjoyed bopping between all of these areas. What better way to finish off the night than to catch a trio downstairs playing motown and rock? These guys were terrific: the bass player/singer was getting the crowd dancing, and the guitar player and drummer were seamlessly providing a groovy beat. This band is good enough for a high cover and the Mesmerist brought them in on a Thursday night, no cover. Thanks for everything, Mesmerist!

As it is central, it is pretty much always busy - and particularly in the evenings - but it doesn't take long to get served as the staff are efficient. The decor is really rather lovely. It has a very vintage feel to it which goes well with the music that they play which I believe is soft jazz (I am not very good with those sorts of genres so please forgive me if I am wrong!). Upstairs, there are several tables and it feels homely but spacious at the same time. I have not had food here in a few years but from what I can remember it is very decent indeed.

They also have a mystery light and dark beer selection that changes regularly, which they reveal once the cask or keg is finished. There's almost always a selection of Kernel, Partizan and Beavertown beers, in addition to some fine Belgian brews, like Delirium Tremens. The only reason I haven't added a 5th star is that a few more kegs would not go amiss here. Oh, and most importantly, they have deep fried gherkins that are FLIPPING DELICIOUS. Their chips are great too, but deep fried gherkins. Fried pickles. yes yes yesssss. The bar staff and proprietor (proprietrix, really) are friendly and fun (I suggest going during Oktoberfest for lederhosen looks and some great German keg brews) and it's a welcome addition to the growing craft beer community here in Brighton.
