When on our Wardair (Canada) Airline's Brighton layovers at the Metropole Hotel, our favourite relaxing spot was just a few feet out the hotel's back door to 'THE HOLE IN THE WALL' Pub, a very small friendly drinking spot run by Sid and Hetty Leer. We spent many an hour sipping Sid's suds and swapping stories, either at the bar or in the back room.
There was a telephone in the back room into which we'd put a 50p coin, call home (to Canada), talk for a few seconds, hang up and get our 50p piece returned. We all did that to let our folks back home that we were safe and sound in England.
If Sid and Hetty are still running the pub, say hello to them from a former Wardair pilot and former happy frequent patron. I'll never return, but will always remember Sid sitting on the stool doling out our drafts.
Affectionately,
