It sounds petty I know but I can't envisage becoming a regular at any pub where I don't llove the music. I know that the music at Fitzherberts next door can be spectacularly great or spectacularly bad - I was once subjected to ten painful minutes of speed metal!- but the fact it's usually the former wins me over. In comparison, the music at Mash Tuns tends to be too middle of the road. Think coffee table pop, rock and acoustic music. The atmosphere is nothing special either with big groups of friends dominating the bar and outside tables most nights and weekends. In short, I'd rather drink next door or failing that, in my own lounge with Tom Waits on the stereo! read more

I've heard lots of good things about the burgers here & it is always busy when I walk past so I was overdue a visit here. I came with a group of work colleagues and we arrived before the lunchtime rush and managed to get a table outside in the sunshine which was great! I had a Swamp Thing burger which was topped with crayfish tails & a Cajun sauce served in a brioche bun. It was delicious, although a bit tricky to eat because it was so huge. The chips were a little disappointing though, they weren't very warm and very salty. I would definitely go back and try some of the other burgers on the menu. read more

Housed in a bright turquoise building on the corner of New England Rd, the Mash Tun is an unfeasibly popular pub in the centre of Brighton. It is part of what I like to refer to as 'pub row', which also comprises the Waggon and Horses and Fitzherberts. The Mash Tun is by far the more popular of the three, which is quite a mystery to me. Yes the Waggon and Horses lacks a certain charm, but Fitzherberts has charm in spades and much more character than the Mash Tun. To the pub's credit, it is spacious and the downstairs area is actually quite nice, if only there were less people trying to squeeze in. On a weekend evening it can be a real struggle to get to the bar, never mind actually getting served! The upstairs overflow seating is fine, but the room lacks atmosphere...it is literally like sitting in a room in someone's house. During the week the Mash Tun is a nice place to have a few drinks, but even then, I would suggest an early arrival if you're interested in securing a table. The summer is definitely the best time to visit this pub, as the amount of outside seating and the busy central location make for really pleasant al fresco drinking. They also do a good jug of Pimms with all the trimmings! read more

The Mash Tun is a perennial Brighton favourite, particularly with students. It's always busy, and has two floors as well as an outdoor seating area for summer people watching. The crampedness seems to add to the atmosphere somehow, and even when very busy (such as just before a show at the Dome!), it rarely seems like too much. I can't really put my finger on why I like this place - there's nothing particularly unusual about it - but they seem to have managed to create a certain kind of welcoming vibe here. They also seem to have started doing a sausage and mash menu a la Shakespeare's Head in 7 dials. Being a Shakies loyalist, I've yet to try this, but it's on my to do list. read more

Practically a Brighton landmark, The Mash Tun embodies everything that is 'cool' about the city. A regular haunt for the creative masses, this place still manages to be super welcoming. The downstairs area is a little cramped, and over the weekend you'll be pushed to find a seat, but there's almost always a familiar face in there who'll let you go and gate crash their table. There is also an upstairs area, with bean bags and benches to boot. This is a good thing to know if you haven't been here before, because it's easily missed and you could spend all night squashed and standing without realising there's plenty of space upstairs. A unique sight in Brighton, The Mash Tun also has a huge outdoor on-street seating area. However, this is nearly always packed, especially during the summer months and the weekends. if you mange to get a chair then hold on to it. The bar selection is relatively good - a decent selection of ales, ciders and beers, wine and spirits, plus a regular happy hour. The menu also plays host to some classic pub-grub dishes, perfect for soaking up the booze. If you have never been here then either you don't live in Brighton, or you possibly live down a hole. Staff work so hard, and the bar is a bit little but you never have to wait too long for a drink. In the heart of Brighton right near the North Laines, this place has a GREAT outdoor seating space. A very nice sun spot to watch people passing by or listen to a busker. It's one of those places where people tend to pre-drink but end up staying there because the fact it has such a good outdoor seating place. Negatives ... The bar staff (I find) are a little rude. It's a very personalised service. I don't expect them to go out and ask how my day is, but human interaction is always nice. I also fine some of the people that go there are a little pretentious, maybe it's because I'm getting a little older, but I do feel that sometimes there will be a crowd of idiots, who are annoyingly loud, or think they are too cool for school. read more

Yes it's always busy, it smells pretty funky and you'll never be able to get a seat, but it's one of those places in Brighton that everyone just loves! I went here on a Saturday night, quite late. My experience wasn't great, I stayed outside most of the time because the music was so bad, the floor and bar was sticky and I thought the drinks prices did not reflect the place - really expensive for a run down, sticky pub. So my experience was mostly of the outdoor area, which was fine. If you've had a few bevs, fancy a dance with strangers and you like sticky floors, go for it. read more

One of the very few things that was good during my Brighton rite of passage (working at Telegen..Sigh) was the multiple pub visits throughout work on Fridays. Being less than a two minute jog away, The Mash Tun was where you would find most of the people you had just left in the office. It's not a particularly great pub and it's always going to be busy, you'd be extremely lucky to get seated outside over the weekend on a nice day. It's a proper boozer, right down to the sticky floors. Oh dear god what is up with the gents toilets!?!?! I hadn't realised that I should have brought SCUBA GEAR with me to swim through the door to the urinals! As you walk through the gents door you get a whopping great big slap in the face with a dominating stench of piss before needing to don your Jesus wig and walk on water (piss actually) to reach the urinal. Okay that's my rant over. The actual pub itself is actually quite nice and seemed to have a nice crowd of people as well as friendly staff. It's quite small downstairs and got cosy quickly but there's ample space outside if it's all sunny and stuff. I'd recommend paying this place a visit if you do not intend on using the toilet. Us Brightonians love the Mash Tun! On a Fr/Sat night its heaving inside with a DJ playing every song you ever wanted to hear (plus those ones from your childhood your embarassed to know all the words to!). It's just a pub but you'll find people heading there to dance the night away and often on the tables! In the summer the outside benches are a well sought after so get there early to chill in the sun and stake your claim on a table! It's based on New Street which is an ideal people watching spot and there are regularly musicians playing music outside to keep you entertained and happy. Its really popular with after work drinkers and the outside seating is rammed whatever the season. Inside is decidedly small and the stairs are very cramped but What it lacks in space it makes up for in atmosphere. Its great at the weekend but be prepared for extreme busyness, you can still get a drink relatively quickly and the friendly crowd make it rammed in a good way. It's tiny, with far too many cumbersome tables for so small a space, the practical upshot of which is that standing room is reduced to an area approximately that of a postage stamp. It's alright if the weather's nice enough to sit outside, although in the summer months this formula should be entirely reversed. Good on the Mash Tun, it's Brighton's most popular pub: that doesn't necessarily make it the best place in Brighton to drink. The prices are, as always, a little high, and with little space to stand, let alone sit, the point of being here eludes me slightly in the evening. As a late afternoon, or late morning drinking spot (yes, some days), it is a nice little spot. The food's quite good too, actually, although you'll never order it in the evening as there is not even enough space to put a plate down. The Mash Tun is the ultimate proof that popularity is not and should never be confused with quality or suitability: simply put, it's nice, but everybody else is there already and thinks so too. This is a really cool little boozer with absolutely tons of space to sit outside when the weathers good. They have some great lagers on tap and a few ales but could probably do with a couple more. The staff are always really welcoming and chatty and seem to cope even when the place is heaving. As its right next to the Dome, it can get really busy with people going in or coming out of gigs so do beware! This is a great pub full of interesting people. It is always lively and on weekends is overflowing with people. It's the kind of place where you can go out on your own and it's really easy to start chatting with people. Drinks are fairly priced (compared to other pubs in Brighton) and it's on a newly renovated pedistrian street just down from the Theatre Royal. The Mash Tun was one of my favourite pubs as a student, partly due to its great location and partly due to its quirkiness (in particular their celebrity 'Wall of Death' sweepstake). It's not the trendiest, lightest, brightest or most pleasant place to enjoy a drink, but it's definitely got something. Inside it might be fairly dark, but it has an atmosphere so typical of Brighton about it that I love it. They also have a nice little (slightly lighter) upstairs area and great outdoor seating on New Road, one of the best sun traps in the city centre. Their toilets however, are quite scary - think bright orange panic room. The Mash Tun attracts a great, laid-back crowd, particularly in the summer months when everyone lounges on the outdoor benches in floaty fabrics and over-sized sunglasses. The only drawback is that you have to drink from plastic cups if you're sitting outside. I know, it's a 'health 'n' safety' thing, but I'm the kind of girl that prefers a proper wine glass... read more

Great pub, stopped off on the way back from eating dinner. It's mostly open plan with seating dotted through out and benches on the corners. It's not very light, not that it matters when you're starring at your drink. Sailor Jerry's was a reasonable price and slipped down my friends necks rather too easily. Has an outside area for those summer afternoons/evenings ! Gets packed on weekend nights so be prepared to wait at the bar ! Whilst you are waiting you can have a go on the wall of death. One of my favourite pubs in Brighton. Studenty feel, outdoor seating / smoking (although you can't take your drink outside at night, despite the plastic cups). It's small and gets completely crowded at night, with many people spilling out onto the street. Plays an upbeat, loud mix of hair band rock, indie and pop on Fri and Sat nights. Free entry, as far as I can tell. Open until 3am on Friday/Sat nights. The only downfall is the clientelle it can sometimes attract. Sometimes cheap studenty places attract drunken rowdy idiots. I'm all good with that, except when things get aggressive. Last night there was a group who were pushing and shoving and throwing shot glasses. It seemed like everyone had clocked them, because the group's entire side of the bar was empty, and everyone else was crammed into the opposite side of the pub. It would have been good if the bouncers had paid attention to this and done something about it. It's a tiny place and it was pretty obvious that everyone was nervous of these idiots, which ruined the night and we left early, because we couldn't move. That being said, drunken idiots can appear anywhere, so I'd still recommend this place. Just have a backup if things get lairy. read more

Attracts a really mixed crowd - in fact, Noel Gallagher was once spotted nursing a pint in there whilst waiting for Nicole to finish performing in All Saints at the Dome next door !! It competes well with the other pubs either side even though its pretty small inside. It can be a mission to get a seat but they have outside seating in the warmer months. There's an outside seating area here, which is great for smokers, and friends of smokers who don't enjoy continously watching their friends leave to light up a fag. I do agree with Sophie W. on this, Mash Tun is *the* place to be in this neck of town and it's never very clear why. The indie music is good and there's a lively crowd. But the decor's pretty basic and the drinks overpriced. You're looking at spending £4 on a double and that's with the student discount they give. Although beware as the discounted drinks on the board look cheaper than they are as they don't include mixers. I end up at this place quite a lot as it's quieter in the day but still with a good atmosphere. There's plenty of outdoor seating in the summer so it's great for watching the world pass by. There're often live bands in weekday evenings too. But with so much to choose from nearby, it doesn't quite cut it. read more

Typically bursting with early-evening liggers spilling out onto the slickly-paved New Road, the Mash Tun is good enough for its location, if little else. As if on some kind of lay line, it sits on the crossroads between North Street, The Dome and the North Laines, and thus pretty much unavoidable for the town-bound. On the dearer side of moderate, drinks are fine, if a little standard, but with shooter options for the passing crowd. Extra seating can be found in the upstairs, though stale rooms. Food is another option, dealing in more of the typical jumped-up pub-grub, though as with drinks, everything is more expensive than it should be. read more

We went to the Mash Tun on Friday 13th September and had a brilliant night. We were visiting Brighton for my hen weekend but aren't really the rowdy sort so we didn't wear anything to distinguish ourselves and had a great night. The staff were friendly and the music was excellent. We went back after going to Komedia on the Saturday. The drinks are so expensive there that we had only had one so we thought we should head to the Mash Tun because we'd had such a good night the night before. We were met outside by the world's rudest bouncer who actually used the ridiculously clichéd phrase 'Not tonight girls', I laughed (because we all genuinely thought he was joking) and he stayed stony faced. Apparently he couldn't let us in because there were too many of us. There were 8 of us but nothing about us suggested we were even slightly likely to be a problem. We were all sober and quite conservatively dressed for a Saturday night. We told him we'd been in there enjoying ourselves for at least 3 hours the night before and he called us liars and told us to move on. Ridiculous policy and ridiculous doorman. Ruined a perfectly good bar and, since it was chucking it down, a great night because we were all drenched by the time we found anywhere else. read more

Well, educational bit aside, The Mash Tun, is also the name of a great pub in the centre of Brighton. Always busy, sometimes with live music, often with happy, young folk, it is a great place to just have a couple during the week, or to start your night come the weekend. The name might suggest a traditional venue with focus on the beer, which isn't strictly true, but with ample outdoor space and a decent selection of drinks you won't be disappointed. The great draw of the Mash Tun is the environment, which is both lively and at the same time relaxed and calm at the same time. It can get very busy though, so be sure to head there early with a posse (a "Mashed" Out Posse perhaps!?) to fend off any rapscallions trying to take your table! read more

The Mashtun is a vibrant and small pub situated nearby the north laines. It has a lot of character and usually gets very busy, especially in the summer. The décor is quite colourful with interesting pictures on the walls and comfortable sofas and chairs to sit on. It is definitely a fun place to go on a sunny afternoon as there are plenty of seats and tables to sit at outside, during the evenings it does get very cramped and can sometimes take a long time to get served, but once you find somewhere to sit it has an enjoyable atmosphere. It gets very lively at the weekends and often has loud music playing which isn't always ideal if you just want to catch up with friends, however it is an easy going and relaxed place to meet new people. It has an upstairs area with sofas and seating similar to downstairs which is sometimes hired out for private parties. It attracts a lot of students mainly because of the friendly vibe because price-wise it's very standard. Overall the pub itself is not overly elegant but it's certainly a very welcoming place to have a few drinks in. read more

I was ripped off in this bar. It had a sign behind the bar that said "Cuba Libre £2.50 with student card". I said to the barmaid "Do you have the offer for the Cuba Libres for £2.50?" She said yes so I said I wanted two and she went and made them. Then she brought them over and she said "£7.60 please." I said "The offer says they're £2.50" and she she said I had to show a student card. I put hand into my pocket to get my wallet out to show her my student card and then she said that it was too late because she'd already processed it in the computer. I asked her to change it and she said no. It's unbelievable that she chose to ignore the fact that I specifically asked for the special offer and then chose not to change it when I asked her to.
