Good haircut but disappointed with customer service. For the price of this experience, I would expect to be treated in a much more professional, kind way. The salon owner is aggressive and pushy. If you don't mind being talked about to other clients when you aren't in the room, you won't be bothered by the vibe. Also, you must love dogs! The owner let's her two dogs have free reign in the salon. Often allowing them to sit on clients laps during a service. She is easily distracted by them resulting in neglect of her clients hair needs. read more

So I have thick, curly-verging-on-kinky hair. I love it, but knew I needed some shape. I hadn't had my hair professionally cut in about 10 years because other salons could only cut it when it was straight. No thank you! I did a search online and this place came highly recommended for us curly girls. I called and made my appointment which was immediately followed by a lovely email reminding me to wear my hair down and styled so that it could be cut in its natural shape. Love that! Now the shop itself is busy because they're pretty damned popular. Plus there's a hairless cat and an absolutely adorable (but huge) dog running around. But none of that mattered to me because Kelly cut my hair beautifully. We talked about what I wanted (accompanied by pics from online as inspiration) and she started cutting. It was just what I needed! It took a couple of days for me to get used to it, but I knew it was a winner. Kelly Anker is a curly hair specialist. I straightened my hair for 15 years and I finally decided to let it dry naturally. I didn't know I had curls (my hair was always wavy) then I had to figure out what to do with it, a straight cut with this much hair was not doing it for me. After 3 hair salons and one year later I found Kelly's salon and I had my first Deva cut, I love it. Kelly showed me how to use every products (from washing it to drying); my hair has never looked this good! Kelly truly is a curly hair specialist. My hair has never looked better and I now have healthier hair that takes less time to style. A few things you should know before going in: This is not a relaxing, day at the spa salon-its a comedy show with scissors. Be prepared for sticker shock-we're talking $150+. Budget extra time-Kelly is all about teaching you how to care for your curls, so she takes the extra time to show you how to use the products (but she's not pushy about selling the products). You must love animals because Kelly's dog and cats come to work with her (they are very well behaved). All in all, i love my hair and get tons of compliments, but my bank account hurts just a little. read more

Kelly is absolutely fabulous. From the moment you walk through the doors you get the feeling that you're in excellent hands. I could not have asked for a better salon experience. She talked with me about my curls and what my usual routine is and all that jazz, and WOW. She was able to easily inform me about what I should be doing with my hair to maximize its health and loveliness. She even talked me through steps on how to care for it! How fantastic is that (because I went in there relatively clueless about how to style whatever new 'do I would end up with). The experience was great and I really look forward to another visit in the future. I highly recommend to anyone who's breathing and has hair on their head. The first time I went to Kelly Elaine, I was thrilled with the results, although I was put off my the various animals hanging out there. Since I was so pleased the first time, I decided to look beyond the critters and go back. I should not have to leave a salon - especially when I paid what I did - and finish cutting my hair myself to get what I wanted. When I asked Kelly to fix what I wasn't happy with, she refused, saying that I didn't like it because I wasn't used to it. Ummm...no, I just didn't like it. When I posted a review on Deva's page, it was taken down, so just know that Deva does that for preferred stylists. Kelly Anker's Salon specializes in Deva Curl Cutting and styling, This is my first haircut that I have absolutely loved! I have always struggled to find a salon that would be able to cut my hair to my satisfaction. I have naturally curly hair , type corkicelli. It can tangle very easily and needs to be hydrated to keep it from becoming dry . Kelly introduced me to the Deva Curl product line that is made for curly girls. It is AMAZING. I used to live in NYC and had a friend who worked at curly hair salons - she's the person who taught me how to do my hair. I moved to Pittsburgh in 2012 and went to a few different salons in the Wexford/North Hills area that were recommended by friends here. I was disappointed with every haircut I got because I knew there was better, I just didn't know where it existed in the Pittsburgh area. Found Kelly Elaine and now I know where to go to get my curly hair cut properly. It's quite a drive from where I live too, but well worth it to have a good hair cut. The bottom line, in my opinion, is that everyone with curly hair needs someone who knows what they're doing, and most salon stylists just don't - they haven't been taught. I was so taken back by everything at this salon. If I were really a snobby person, I could say the salon it self was not up to par, however, I was beyond willing to look past that to have my hair cut by a Curly Deva Hair Specialist. Kelly was over an hour late to cut my hair, with barely an apology or an offer of a discount or favor. She told me how to talk to future hair stylists when I commented about my own bangs, thank you but this is not my first rodeo of my getting my bangs cut. She did give a good hair cut and great color, however, moving here to Pittsburgh from Los Angeles I was blown away by the cost of the hair cut at the end. I have never seen prices so high and I have always gone to a Curly Deva Hair Specialist... in LA! If her customer service was MUCH better and prices A LOT lower and I might think about going back. She did redeem a little herself at the end, and we ended with a hug but it was still way too little way too late. read more

The second Kelly started working on my hair, I could tell she knew what she was doing. She understands my hair better than even I do and really took the time to hear me out and help me figure out what I wanted. She was real and honest with me during the consultation, which I couldn't have appreciated any more. Any rumors or other reviews you've read about having products shoved down your throat are entirely exaggerated and pretty much untrue. I was asked once as I was checking out if I was buying any products and that was IT. I ended up buying them online later anyway because of the amazingly soft, bouncy and frizz-free way they made my hair. Kelly was great-- very friendly and SO talented at her job. For the first haircut with color was about $160. I already can't wait to go back in the spring to try out the special curly hair highlighting technique she was telling me about. I've gotten Deva cuts at the NYC Devachan salon as well as Deva trained specialists in Florida and Boston. They did not cut my hair dry, as the Deva stylists usually do. The only thing Deva about it was that they used Deva styling products. My hair looked okay in the end, though just about as good as any non-curly specialist would cut it. I went out of my way and spent more money for the Deva cut, and it was definitely not worth it. I would not recommend if you're looking for the Deva experience. read more

Let's just say that I have been searching for someone who "gets' my hair for years - since my all-time-favorite stylist retired. Then I found Victoria at Kelly Elaine, Inc. in Penn Hills. Get over your fear of crossing rivers and make the drive. You will be thrilled. First I had to send her advance pics of my hair (360 degrees) so Victoria could be prepared for the challenge. So when I got there she was prepared to cut each section of my curls/waves sothey kind of go with the flow. Keep in mind curly heads that our curls are not standardized - they are not all going to curl the same. This is where Victoria shines. She truly made every crazy section of my hair behave and curl like it never did before...naturally. I had already been using Deva Curl products (they do not push produtcts at all) and was happy to see that is THE product of choice there. BUT, I didn't know how to use the products effectively. I learned the tricks of the trade from Victoria - particularly how to dry it and not damage it. So my first visit felt more like a makeover. I could not believe the difference Victoria made. AND I still can't believe that my hair turns out that way everyday now. You know how curly hair is kind of fuzzy feeling and never silky to the touch. Well, mine is now shiny and smooth.
