Our family of four had dinner there last night and we very pleased with our dinners - we are visitors to this city and wish we had a Korean restaurant this authentic near us! We ordered fried pork dumplings (goon-mando), which disappeared in moments. Main courses were sizzling bibimbab, bulgogi and also samgyup (spicy pork belly). The sizzling bibimbab dishes were fabulous, delightfully hot and creating crispy rice at the bottom which we happily scraped off to eat, leaving no crumbs. Our kids happily devoured their dishes as well. We had an attentive, friendly waitress and our meals arrived in a reasonable time. Definitely one of our favorite meals on this vacation! read more

Should be called Tofu house - not BBQ. There was no Korean BBQ as it stated - disappointed but the food made up for that. Great banchai and quality of all the dishes were great! I had low expectations when I came here. A lot of Korean restaurants I had been to in small towns were underwhelming. I was pleasantly surprised as I really liked the food. When we walked in, we were seated right away but the service was poor. It took us forever to flag down the single waitress that was serving the entire restaurant. I'm guessing someone called in sick or the lack of front of house staff is a common occurrence - I don't know if it's the former or latter. Later on in the evening, I think one of the back of house staff members came out to help. Regardless, my impression is that people are more chill about the issues regarding service in Nanaimo. This restaurant is in a house that was renovated to be a restaurant. We ordered Combo A. It came with 2 bowls of rice, dumplings, dengjang jiggae, a meat dish (we chose pork), and along with typical Korean side dishes. The style of cooking was homey and I really liked it. I think this place is hopping for the non-Asian locals too as most of the customers were non-Asian. I guess good food translates into having a diverse customer base. read more

Had lunch here in Namaimo. Been craving spicy foods since starting on this road trip 3 weeks ago. Wasn't convinced I'd find a decent Korean on Vancouver Island but Kim's BBQ in Nanaimo was great. Five stars since it does a good job overall. It won't be fair for me to compare to other Korean restaurants I've eaten in but for Nanaimo, this is 5 Stars. Staying over night at Nanaimo and the hubby found this lil Korean restaurant. Was pleasantly surprised! We were greeted by a Korean waitress, that shows a good sign. We then see a couple Korean people eating there, so I was feeling more confident of this place. Hubby order their wed special. $16.95 for the Gam Ja Tang. Which is a pork back bone soup with veggies and potatoes. I ordered their regular combo A $27.95 which came with wanton, and a choice of a meat dish and a choice of a soup with a bowl of rice. So good and such a good deal. We topped of our order with a warm sake! Perfect comfy food for this chilly night. I would def come back again! read more

Service was prompt and friendly. The food was slow coming out, but we seemed to have gotten there with a number of other parties. The food seemed quite good, although neither of us is expert on the subject of Korean. We would go back again though without hesitation. Our young server wasn't very communicative, even though she was very nice. If you're like us and don't know a lot about Korean food, maybe take a crash course on the web? The restaurant itself is nicely decorated in a modern East-Asian style, and impeccably clean. I was on the hunt for Korean restaurants in the Nanaimo area since I was visiting friends in Victoria. i hadn't had Korean food in days. I can go a little while, but then I start going through kimchee withdrawal and need a fix. We were going to the Nanaimo museum and stopped here for lunch. I was very impressed by the menu because they had some things that I haven't seen elsewhere, like different kinds of bibimbap, more than the usual suspects. I ordered soondubu. When it came out, they did not give me an egg to crack into the hotpot. When I inquired, I was told that it was already inside. Unfortunately, I usually like to eat my egg yolk intact rather than mixing the whole thing into my soondubu. So when I searched around for my egg, I ended up breaking the amber yolk into the hotpot mix. If you like to eat your egg like me, then you might have to let the waiter know since they will automatically put it into the bottom of your soondubu. The tofu wasn't as silky as some places in California, but for Canada, this is probably the best I will get on the island. I would rate this place a 4-star in Southern California, so I added an extra star for being that good in an area that isn't familiar with the food. I would have to say that this is the best Korean restaurant on the island. I haven't visited all of them yet, but out of the ones I have eaten at -- this is the best so far. Next time I visit Vancouver Island, I will be heading to Kim's! read more

I really liked Kim's Korean barbeque house but you have to be very specific when you're ordering by call. We once made a mistake by not checking the food when we picked it up and we only got half of our meal But in my offence I think I was not speaking clearly enough. Great bulgogi, I tried the pork belly, my dad got the pork and my mom got the chicken which proved to be the spiciest. It comes with an array of cold condiments like kimchi (spicy pickled Asian cabbage), salty red bean paste, sweet and salty mashed potatoes, and celery with ham. Everyone gets a little bowl of steamed rice and then a huge pile of green lettuce is served to wrap it all up! So much fun and delicious. With all the different flavours every bite was unique!! I would rate this place higher, but when we went the service was pretty bad. The food was good, but the stew we had was more tofu than meat, which was fine but from reading the menu I was expecting more meat. More like meat broth. The rest of the food was great. The food took a very long time to come out. I'm not one to glance at my phone during a meal, but I estimate it was a 30-40 mins wait for our food. We had to ask for tea three times before we were served any, and it wasn't offered. One server seemed pretty good, but the server we had seemed very new to serving. When the food did arrive, I moved the plate from one appy we had out of the way, so she could put the hot food down. She then fully reached right across my plate (no apology or exude my reach) to remove the unwanted plate. It would have been more suitable for her to walk around me and remove the plate from the other side of me. When I went to pay, I had $20 cash and wanted to pay the balance by credit. She seemed really confused and got out a calculator and I just thought good god, I will just pay it all on credit. I would come back when it was less busy, to give it another try and maybe it would be better. read more

We were reluctant to go to this place while passing through Nanaimo for lunch, but I saw the reviews and we decided to give it a chance. We were both so glad that we did! We had the wontons and the chicken bbq and we both left stuffed and it was delicious!! So much flavour and just a touch of heat. Yummy! Love it here! So yummy!!!! Especially their hot pot and their sweet potato noodles!!!! I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants good authentic food. The waitresses are also very friendly, and the environment is very nice, despite it being on the small side, even when it gets packed it is still a very comfortable location, and it isn't expensive either. And as a plus whenever I order, (not sure if it's because of the dishes or it is all dishes) they give you some kimchi and stuff on the side, which is a lovely little bonus. I would also really recommend their gochujang samgyup, their bulgoli beef and also any of their soups and stew!! If you like spicy food they can and will spice it up for you, even if you're not a huge fan of the spice like me, they'll tone it town, but they can make it hot, I almost cried when I tried my moms dish. read more

Been here twice before and was really happy that we had a great authentic Korean restaurant in Nanaimo, but we were really disappointed with their service this time. We had to wait an hour and half for our food and at some point we thought of leaving which we should have. We had 2 kids who were hungry when we got there and they didn't bother that kids would be hungry after such a long wait. We saw that people who came after us got their food, maybe their favorite customers lord knows but at least care to bring some food to kids first at least. Seemed like they were short staffed as one girl was managing everything from being a cashier to waitress and busser. She was working hard but the management was poor. We talked with other customers sitting beside us and they had to wait an hr too they said. Not sure if we are going there again unless they've hired more staff and learn proper customer service. read more
