    Eli training with Master Kim
    Eli S.

So far so good, we wanted to be enrolled in a local training program that was open to working with our young kids, we have been here for about one year. We appreciate the support and attention they have given our kids so far, there are times that they have provided special attention to our kids when they needed extra help in areas. For the Jr. Hopkido class they'll try to make it fun by throwing in physical games at the end. We look forward to years of commitment!

Ask the Community - Kim's Hapkido

What is the price range for each class and about how many classes per week is generally anticipated/expected for a 4-5 yr old boy?

I’d say somewhere in the range of $20/class and 2 classes/week to progress at a reasonable pace. Can do 3 classes a week if you want to advance faster or switch from 2 to 1 classes during busy periods. Can make up missed classes up to a month after.

    Do the kids do sparring?

Hello, Sparring is optional for students based on whether the student is at least orange belt…

Hello, what's the minimum age to attend and what are the courses and hours?

If you're looking for a workout that gets you sweating without any judgment, this is the perfect spot--no matter your size, shape, or fitness level. The classes focus on technique and fitness, so you're not sparring or fighting anyone. Mauricio, the owner, is incredibly welcoming and sweet, which makes the whole experience even better. I've been attending consistently and have already noticed a positive shift in how I feel about my body. Plus, it's such a great way to release any aggression! There's nothing like the satisfying thud of a solid punch on the bag. If you're thinking about trying kickboxing, I can't recommend this gym enough--it's motivating, empowering, and a total game-changer :)

The space he cultivates here isn't your run of the mill martial arts gym. It's an encouraging, collaborative, and welcoming learning environment where Coach takes time to focus on and refine technical skill, depth of knowledge, and rhythm. I recall in particular how Coach Joe took the time to fix my middle kick in a way that really clicked. He takes special care and attention to help you learn not only the proper form of a move but also the why behind it. Once you have it, it's impossible to forget. If he takes the time to help you correct something, just know that he believes in your capacity for growth and improvement. He is a wellspring of expertise. This learning environment is also reinforced by the athletes and experienced students who I've had the pleasure of training with. Through drills and sparring, everyone works to support each other and reinforce our learning. What you get here is not just an education; it's also a didactic community. I can't recommend this gym enough.

The staff is always genuinely pleasant and helpful -- the kind of people who greet you with a smile and make the space feel welcoming. I love the infrared sauna, especially because you can book it in advance, which makes planning workouts so much easier. Their variety of weight machines keeps things interesting, and I never feel like I'm waiting around for equipment. It's rarely crowded except for the usual New Year rush. Parking in the lot can be a little tricky since it's small, but there's plenty of free street parking right outside, so it's never a dealbreaker. They also offer a great lineup of workout classes, which adds even more value. Overall, it's a gym that makes staying consistent feel effortless. Neighbors and friends are all members so it's fun to work out together and there are perks for referring new members too!

The facilities are very spacious, albeit extremely busy a lot of the time, they have a lot of classes and equipment, and the people who work there are all really personable and attendant. Super nice staff. So why not 5 stars? Because sometimes the music is just this contemporary drivel that makes me lose my mind. Yeah, I could put in some earbuds but they never stay in during heavy bag work. I just don't understand why music is so bad these days. Is it the gym's fault for things going on in the music industry? Yes. Yes it is. If you are sitting there all shift day after day, make a playlist and put some love into it. There's SO much good music out there. Don't play homogeneous corporate slop. We can do better. I BELIEVE IN YOU!!!!

I had college in the morning and afternoon, worked until closing, and would come here right after work to get my workout in. The hours changed sometime after COVID, but I've continued coming here because I really like the location and how convenient it is for me. I've tried other gyms, including 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness, Gold's Gym, and Planet Fitness. Some were okay, but I keep coming back to UFC Gym because it's close to home and is open late on certain days, which works well with my schedule. Since I usually come later at night, I've never really had an issue with waiting for equipment. The cleanliness is decent overall, although I do wish members would be more considerate about cleaning up after themselves. It's frustrating seeing people throw or leave paper towels behind after wiping down equipment instead of putting them in the trash. The staff have always been friendly and helpful whenever I've needed anything. Overall, I've had a pretty good experience here over the years, and the convenience, late hours, and location are the main reasons I continue to come back.

I've been doing Muay Thai for 14 years, give or take…read more Most of that time was spent doing it one-on-one with trainers, which was awesome for personal attention and scheduling, but expensive and hard to stay consistent with. But they were able to be patient with me, to explain things repeatedly--I'm very visual and super literary but much less intuitive when it comes to athletics--and this helped me learn the basics of the art of Muay Thai. And then my last trainer got too busy to keep going. So I tried a bunch of Muay Thai gyms, never really finding anything that matched the return I got from 1-on-1 training. Then one day I spotted NELA Combat Fitness on a Figueroa corner and got intrigued. I tried a class and loved the energy of the space. Highland Park is a wildly creative area, and the experience at NELA Combat Fitness mirrors this: The people are diverse, upbeat, inclusive and very dedicated to the art of Muay Thai. You might find a 50+ year old like me training with someone in their early 20s, and this dynamic is always approached respectfully. Ed, the owner, is a true gem of a human being: warm, funny, and with deep history with and knowledge of Muay Thai, and he teaches with a razor sharp eye and the communication skills to help keep things safe and to level up your game. The gym itself is spotless, well-designed and comfortable. One way that the absolute courtesy with which the gym operates shows up is when we go return Thai pads or kick shields: cleaning wipes are shared and pads are stacked in an orderly way. Every teacher approaches class a little differently, but if you show up, know that you are in for a wonderful workout that is easily tailored to your skill level. The music is always different and always good. You will be inspired to push yourself beyond your limits, outside of your comfort zone. You will grow, you will sweat, and you will learn. And you will emerge a stronger person. And about Muay Thai overall? It's the best. I feel elevated and calm afterwards, able to take on anything life throws my way with compassion. That's the irony - punching, kicking, elbowing and kneeing it out for an hour actually makes you a calmer, kinder person. Your baseline is reset and your cardio and strength gets better and better. I truly feel like I've found a gym that I want to stay a part of. Thank you, Ed, and thank you NELA Combat Fitness community.

I was so pumped after my first class ever, I signed up straight after. Being a beginner myself, I was happy that everyone here took the time to show me how to do the moves. The kickboxing class was intense in the best way possible - a hard but awesome workout that left me feeling like a total champ. I have a long way to go in my journey, and girl I know it, but I couldn't have found a better place to go to. The owner, Ed, is incredible. You can really tell he cares deeply for the community as he's not just running a top-notch gym, he's building a fitness family. He was motivating and supportive, pushing everyone to give their best without ever losing the fun vibe. Shoutout to Derrick too for teaching me the moves in my first class!
