All the years I've lived in this city and I've never once stepped foot in this place. Though I've passed and gandered and the place many times I guess I always missed the fun surprises inside. Long story short as I was scrolling through the feed on that blue app I saw an ad for a horror themed circus that promised extra fright. Curiously I pondered at the date and thought why the heck not. Then as I looked at the website I discovered it was being hosted right at the Kimo. The light bulb in my head clicked on and I thought let me see if a friend wants to join so I can make a better decision. Needless to say I waited to buy a ticket. Why you ask? Well Ill be honest I wasn't quite sure at the time. Then fast forward to last weekend and the same ad appeared with a beautiful promotion setting a price I just couldn't refuse. I just knew I had to go. My friend canceled on me but that was ok because when I stepped through those door it was a refreshing experience. I couldn't help but get lost in its great grandeur. As I entered the seating area I looked around and the vibe had me so excited. The show was phenomenal. I had a really great time. I'm so glad I went. Not only did I get to see the inside of this place for the first time but I got to experience a show here which made it so much more special. Kimo, how do I love thee? For your bizarre glowing eyed skeletons, and your red velvet drapes. And is it haunted? Hmmmm. We may never know. Gem of downtown Albuquerque, the Kimo theatre is home to Burlesque, live theater, comedy shows, and the silver screen. Yes. All of these things. I love when they do film festivals. Nights upon nights of old film noir and classics. And every February, Southwest Burlesque makes me want to quit my job and become a dancer. The Nutcracker every December. Ah, the memories. Literally, my only complaint is the seating. It's very old school. Which is fine, but those comfy new-fangled seats in the new theaters have me (and my tush) spoiled. Hint - restrooms are on the sides down a hallway that doesn't seem like it belongs to the building. read more

The Kimo is a gem in the Albuquerque area! Tonight we attended the Kimo's 90th anniversary celebration and it was simply magical. Mayor Berry had a real silver screen installed as well as new carpet to compliment the well preserved vintage space. The Kimo is a destination for all lovers of the arts. It is host to book readings, poetry, and movie showings. For tonight's event, we were treated to Buster Keaton's "The General" with the Alloy Orchestra playing the score live for just $0.50 per ticket with free water, popcorn, and cake. (Concessions typically not included in movie ticket pricing.) The movie was outstanding and the Alloy Orchestra was a once in a lifetime experience. The Kimo has so many of these incredible events that people need to know more about. I know our family will be attending more of them! read more

Our first time! I know, I know, how lame is that, huh? However, everyone has a "First Time" in their life, right? The first time you drove a car, ate sushi, drank beer, had... Well, you get the idea. This was ours, and it was very special! Something we'll dream about for years to come? Maybe not that deep, let's be real, it was a theater experience, not a showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show! No Time Warps were experienced. However, it was cool! Even from the Nose Bleed Section you really were able to see and experience everything on stage. The sound was great and, though I'm not much of a ballet guy, "The Buttcracker" proved to be everything they say it is. Would I go again? Not to a ballet, I already took one for the team, but bring on a play or a musical and I'm there! Count me in! read more

The Kimo Theater is absolutely stunning its located right in the heart of our city. Such a historic venue. It first opened in 1927. So many things take place here such as, films, theater, musical performances, and local art show cases. I have been to the Kimo for small plays as a child for field trip but I am booking my next show soon, I recently had to opportunity to step inside again during the Art Walk. The doors were open to everyone and the staff was so friendly inviting passerby's inside and filling us in on all the information about the local vendors that were participating. There was also staff educating people on the history of the building which is so interesting. The Kimo Theater is beautiful on the outside but my goodness it is even more extraordinary on the inside. So after living here for nearly two years, we FINALLY went to the KiMo! About darn time! We went to see Seth Meyers, and it was pretty cool. Not just Seth - obviously, that was awesome. But the theater itself is pretty and even though we were up in the nosebleeds, we could see perfectly well and really enjoyed the show. The theater itself is beautiful - decorated very traditionally Southwestern (it seems to me - I am no expert) and in a subtle manner - enough to keep you interested prior to the show, but not so much that it's distracting once the show begins. The ceiling is really pretty, with zigzag cutouts and twinkly lights above, so it appears that you are looking up into the night sky. Pretty cool. (However, the fake cow skulls all over the place with their glowing red eyes are fairly disturbing...) Now that I think about it, we should have stayed back and checked out the lower level. I would like to have seen what the view from the seats down there is like for future reference. It's always weird to choose seats online when you haven't been somewhere, and that was our opportunity to check it out - oh, well. It's a fairly small place, and there aren't really any bad seats. The balcony does give you a little bit of a distorted angle - you are very much looking down, since it goes pretty quickly vertically up - good for keeping it small, but like I said, distorts it a bit. I think we need to pay more attention to the cool stuff that goes on there. There was a poster for some old movies playing this summer, and a Hitchcock retrospective. Don't be fooled by the seating chart online - I was. The seating chart shows seats divided into sections in the balcony, but they are just one long row, so anyone sitting in the middle has to pass through the entire row of folks seated along the way, there is no break anywhere. The bottom floor has two side sections and a center section, so that appears accurate. All in all, a good place to do cool stuff - you should definitely check it out! read more

Quite possibly the best venue to catch a show in ABQ, bar none. When I say "show", the KiMo does it all. Standup, film, orchestrations, plays, rock concerts and hip-hop, burlesque, the place runs the gamut, with style and a regional sensibility that dares you to embrace our heritage. But let's get down to the obvious, shall we? The place is decked out in what the untrained eye might perceive as swastikas They most certainly are not. Nazis inverted the symbol in an attempt to coup its very essence and, well, judging from our collective twentieth and twenty-first century conscience, it's obvious they succeeded. Over millennia the symbol was "an important symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, among others, and was also used in Native American and Jewish faiths prior to World War II. By the early twentieth century it was regarded worldwide as symbol of good luck and auspiciousness." You should see the KiMo and take one of these free tours! Note: THIS TOUR IS NOT FUN FOR LITTLE KIDS (they will grow restless and probably detract from everyone's experience). These interactive guided tours are Free and occur every Wednesday and Sunday (non holiday). They are about an hour long and allow casual attire. Just please don't bring food or beverages. More tour and historical information is available online. Rescued just one day from demolition, the city now owns what used to be a favorite hangout for all ages. Inside there is much artwork and craftsmanship to see from a century ago and is charming enough to still draw today's visitors. Not huge, but apparently big enough to compete with other venues and support itself, the full stage and seating for 687 people are available for anyone to rent. It is used for movies, plays, comedy tours and presentations. Since Central Avenue has hosted a lot of local movie filming, this theater has hosted crews and actors from "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul", but also a slew of many other well-known productions. If you take one of the free tours, I believe you'll find that the mezzanine level has the neatest views within. Still, the entire building has restoration work throughout and brings an original charm back to life no matter where you stand. If you visit, ask about Bobby Darnell, the little boy (8 yrs old?) who lost his life in the theater near the main entrance. His ghost reportedly haunts the building and his mischief is the reason behind a shrine dedicated to him under the stairwell stage-right. There's a second ghost, a woman, who also appears but is, however, less-known. Owned by the city of Albuquerque since 1976, the KiMo Theater has also incorporated an art gallery on site where you can get on the 2year-long waitlist to display your artwork, or buy someone else's. It is co-located with the concessions area. This art/concessions area is not part of the original building but it helps drive revenue for the city's planned upgrades. Some of these future plans include newer LED lighting and new seating, both of which scream "1980s". Yes, if you are local, a business needing a venue or have interest in historic sites, this is a city gem open to view on the tour days above and available for rent to anyone. Beautiful on the outside, spectacular on the inside and featuring deco detailing you won't see anywhere else. Went here to see comedian Seth Meyers. The venue is historic for sure. I don't know how many people this place holds, but it's fairly small. We were in the balcony, and the design is very vertical, so we had a good view. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house, honestly. Seats are tight, so you will be standing up to let anyone in or out of your row. Sound was good. There is a big parking garage in the back, so no worries there, but you will have to pay (last night was $6). Of course Seth did a great job and was really funny! read more

Impressive Landmark Theatre; Comfortable Seating; Art is Everywhere. Wow - what a visually stunning theatre. Art deco theatre, incredible art on the walls, in the tiled floors, fascinating & dramatic lights & lighting. We were there 2/14/15 for the Burlesque Showcase. Fascinating mix of patrons & costumed patrons. Impressive art on loan in side lobby. The show was well done. The drinks were reasonably priced & the line moved quickly. The bathrooms were adequately sized & lines were less than normal given the sold out crowd. The seating was comfortable - could always use some more leg room. We were maybe 6 rows up from the stage - not too close or too far away. Acoustics were great. Wonderful theatre & a place we would return to & recommend without reservation. read more

Take in a show and a piece of Albuquerque history at the Kimo Theatre--one of the city's true treasures. This place always holds a place of nostalgia for me, as I've been coming here since I was a child. Indeed, the theater is one of the city's oldest, built in 1925 by Oreste Bachechi, a successful local merchant. The hired architect scoured New Mexico for design inspiration and the theater's "Pueblo Deco" style is reflective of the state's unique cultural heritage. The theater has a wonderful character and charm, mirrored in its many productions of theater, dance, film, and even magic! This IS as good as it gets! The Kimo is both a historical landmark uniquely adorned, and an audio/visual delight for for all venues of entertainment. You'll have a clear view of the stage from any vantage point, where ever you are seated, and the acoustics & sound system are excellent. I've enjoyed theater, musicians, comedy and all performances here for over 15 years. An excellent cozy venue for local shows, the Kimo theatre is a wonderful entertainment experience with a warm southwestern flair. We sat in the back of the bleacher section and were pleasantly surprised we still had a decent view. The acoustics were impressive and clear. At 5'8" I found the seats slightly cramped, but not enough to create discomfort. And interestingly, only female lavatories are on the second floor. We'll go back without hesitation. read more

I came her for their Stanley Kubrick showcase. They accept major credit cards, and debit cards; which is nice. The interior was great to look at, and the staff were very friendly. Inside, they serve bottled water/sodas, popcorn and candy. All under $3 each, and their box of popcorn was a dollar, but if you decide to just get something of this sort, bring cash, because there is a minimum $5 charge, and since I don't carry cash I ended up with 3 boxes of candy, popcorn and a bottle of water (which was actually not that bad all together). Make time and come check out a show here. By the way, parking on the curb, and depending on the time, it'll cost you about $2+ or free after 6pm daily and on weekends. read more

This is a beautiful historic theatre. I love the events they throw and the shows they provide.. I've performed on that historic stage a few times with various performing groups. I love the story of the haunting and the little ghost boy. It's a creepy creeptastic building. You can smell and feel the history in that building especially when you're backstage. I highly recommend you catch one of their shows or events. You will not be disappointed. read more

Definitely one of Albuquerque's gems! I've been to this old time theater on numerous occassions for several different types of shows (Banff Film Festival this time) and have always been impressed by the ecclectic mix of decor. The theater runs a concession stand just as other movie theaters, but depending on the show may limit whether or not you can bring the snacks into the auditorium. The great thing is the admission prices are reasonable and the concessions aren't out to empty your wallet! $1.00 popcorn with 25 cent refills, soda's for $2.00. Not sure what the candy costs, haven't bought any, but I'm pretty sure it's not the price gouging $7.00 of other movie theaters. I'm always happy when I come here and enjoy the venue. Next? I love the KiMo, it is a great venue to see a show. We typically see the Banff Film Festival here, and it had moved away for a few years, I was glad when it moved back. It has an intimate feel to the theatre and it's a little funky and odd, all of which I like. I have seen several dance groups here, and they have authors come through and talk about their books. This is a beautiful, old theater but they have dishonest people working for them. My son was swindled by the concessions salesperson who took advantage of him because he's young, stealing $40 from him. It was not a mistake. Count your change when you deal with these thieves. read more

While visiting ABQ I wanted to show my son and grandson the inside of the KIMO where as a kid I remember watching movies such as" Giant "and "Love me tender". Let me tell you they were impressed, as was I. This is a must visit for the tourist, or any local....best of all its free! read more

Venue has a great look and comfortable seating. I would have liked to give 5 stars but, i went to see a magic show which played a lot of music throughout the performances and it was way too loud. I was going to leave halfway through, but my husband and i were enjoying the show, so we literally had to put klenex in our ears. We were in the middle balcony area with a great view. I would love to go enjoy many other performances but i will definitely be bringing my earbuds so i don't go deaf. read more

Not sure how I've never been to the KiMo before last night. Being able to see A Christmas Story will take me almost anywhere. I took a peek at the calender and there seems to be a really great line up. Okay, so he prices are incredible, I'm talking $1.00 for popcorn and .25 cent unlimited refills.
