I was visiting Albuquerque and was delighted to find out the improv scene is alive and well! I attended the 9 PM Saturday show for just 14 dollars after fees. Buying tickets online and checking in was very easy. The cast played a bunch of short form games and brought a lot of energy. The audience and myself had a great time. I've been to a few improvs in Los Angeles. I wasn't too enthused with this location. It appeared that they implanted people In the audience to spit out ideas (so they know in advance what to say). The Box always has something going on. The only rule is that is that it has to be fun. Fun kid's shows followed up with hilarious Improv and Sketch comedy. At this point, it's the only place in town that has Improv and Sketch. It is also one of the only places in Albuquerque that has fostered new theatrical works. Get this, some of the works are even written by the youngsters who perform there. The folks at the Box seem to be doing their best to get that mothball smell out of Albuquerque Theatre. read more

It's a small theater but you feel you have made friends when it's over. I have no favorite actors because each of them have moments where they shine, just depends on the vibe of the evening. I pride myself in finding places in Albuquerque that make me feel like Im in bigger cities like Chicago and San Francisco and this certainly is one of them! This Update specifically references The Show, a recurring, local improv troupe that I had the pleasure of checking out this past Saturday. I'll preen just a second, here. I'm a theatre veteran of this town. As an actor and playwright I've cut my teeth on the stage all over this city, waaay before The Box came into existence. Improv is it's own beast, seriously tough. I couldn't imagine doing it. To get an idea of the juevos it takes to pull off a solid hour of quality improv, consider that it's tantamount to ripping your clothes off and standing in front of an audience of strangers. I was thoroughly impressed by the talent exhibited by The Show. Not only are these people competing for the pinnacle of local talent, there are moments that meet Second City standards, they're doing the shows with style and smarts. Catch them now to watch 'em gel; in a year or two, they'll be a machine. More than anything, I was disappointed with the crowd, who offered some pretty lame suggestions for the improvised sets. Overall, I laughed endlessly. We had a great time, ticket prices were totally fair (about eight bucks), and the cast was happy to meet us after the show. GO! read more

I went to the Duke City Improv Festival here and caught two shows. It's a little black box theater with less than 50 seats (and the ability to set up folding chairs for overflow audience), a small concession stand, and, at least for the DCIF event, Tractor Brewing Company beers and some wines being sold in the lobby. I had a great time sitting in the crowd, drinking my Tractor beer, and unwinding to truly entertaining performances after a long week. The improv festival, which I understand is annual, is a definite must-do, but if this is any indication to the type of fun, creative events that happen at the Box, anything that piques your interest would probably be worth the trip. read more

They have improv performances here every weekend. It makes for an inexpensive, fun, somewhat different Saturday night. The improv cast are all members of the comedy club held at the Box. (If your interested in exercising your funny bone check out their website for beginner classes). Occasionally the box will also have special standup performances. The wife and I have been to both. I preferred the improv night more, but both nights were enjoyable. One of the standup comics later appeared in 'Last Comic Standing', which was cool (she didn't make it to the finals but passed the first round!). So let me talk their regular show. Like any improv, the cast involves the audience, and with more than just asking for prompts. That can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. The space is intimate, no more than a hundred fit in the crowd. If you have a decent sized group, you could easily "volunteer" the shyest of the bunch to the stage. But you wouldnt do that, right? Of course not. If you are bashful, however, beware. The show itself contains several bits that I thought were just long enough to stay fresh and coherent. We shared many laughs and would love to come back. The great thing with improv is our next outing will be guarenteed to be different. read more

I've hit up The Box a couple of nights to watch their improve group. Hilarity every time! No seriously, I know we say we LOL but do you really? Come here and you will ALOL (actually laugh out loud), I promise. Our latest trek out to The Box had a special guest appearing with the troop, Mr. Bob Odenkirk. Saul Goodman to those of you who only know him by his character name. This guy is funny! He could have easily overpowered the group but each and every member of that troop is so strong and incredibly talented that it was a great blend! They have a cute little concessions corner too. We visited The Box with a few friends for the first time last Friday. What a great place for some laughs and to de-stress after a long work week! Improv theatre requires a lot of courage...hats off to the actors for pulling it off! They were clever, quick-witted, and readily accepted audience suggestions. The participation component of the show makes it even more fun and interactive. Bonus...the tickets are under $10 each. Definitely left more of a lasting impression than a typical movie date. We went here to see "Winning the Future" by Up and Down Theater Company. It was a hilarious musical. I highly recommend this show. They will be performing there again on tonight and tomorrow 4/6. We had a great time. Next time I will get there earlier to have a sit next to my husband. We got there 5 minutes before the show and it was packed. It is a small theater too. Luckily, a nice man switched seats with me so I could be next to my guy. read more
