The food here is good to me, the buttered shrimp and rice, the fried chicken, the plantains, the avocado tomato salad and the buttered corn are what I had today. Most of the dishes are pork and I'm allergic But for the price and the amount of food they give you, it is worth it for a meal that can feed 2 people. Another thing, I went yesterday and the cashier, older lady with a red shirt, had the most awful attitude. She definitely doesn't wanna work there, which is awful because usually us puertorricans are pretty good with customer service. Make pasteles the right way and label them the right way, not just that, actually make pasteles that don't contain pork. Just because pork is cheap does Not mean EVERYTHING has to contain pork. I normally go to killeen like twice every other month. Yesterday, I went looking for paper . I bought 4 empanadillas 2 Carne and 2 pizza. I also bought a plate of white and beans. First of all, the beans were like, no, these are not puertorican beans. Even my husband said, it doesn't taste like beans. When I took the first bite of the empanadilla I said, definitely this no puertorican. The meat didn't have not even salt or sazon. I told my husband, they might have somebody in the kitchen that don't know anything about puertorican food. I used to go to the store to buy the things I can't find here, but now I get everything in one place and cheaper. The customer service still nice, but they need to hire a new cook. This is a hidden gem. Looking at the name of this place on Yelp, I don't think I would have came to check this place out since I was thinking it was a health center. We walked in and saw a line to the right to wait for food. On the left, they have the Latin grocery store. You can find bakery items, Latin/Caribbean/Puerto Rican items and various produce. Good place to find items you may need to cook up some good food. We came for the empanadas so we went to the right. There is a cake display and a cashier can take your order. There is a longer line on the far right to order the other food items. They have seafood, beef or chicken plates. The empanadas were so good!!! Where have I been? Why haven't I known about this place? I want to share it on Yelp so you can try these too. These empanadas are flavorful and so good. I ate the rest when it was cold and it was still good. I've been coming here for years and the place is unmatched for the selection offered in store and at the restaurant. Saw a few complaining reviews about prices going up, but that seems to be everywhere. See a lot of complaining in PR, rather than ways to make things better. Used to it, so it does not bother me. Best beware of who you vote for, but I will digress. Also saw reviews about some employees with lousy attitudes. Truthfully, I can easily overlook this since the food is so good. This is my go to shop for my herbs and spices. I wish it was a little bigger in size but I love it all the same. I had never tried the food on the restaurant side but it smelled so good that I had to sample something. They didn't disappoint me. How I was raised, I'm used to the potato salad being loaded with a lot of stuff. They had three choices of potato salad and I just pointed to one. We've been shopping at Killeen Nutritional Center for the past 4 years. We travel 40 minutes for the selection of Spanish products. Our bill is always $150+. My trips have all been pleasant until today. I purchased 4 bags of Goya Rice 10lbs that had a price tag of $8.49. When I got to the register, it rang up $12.99. Mentioned it to the cashier and her response was "things have gone up in price." Asked to speak to a manager and after 20 minutes of making me wait some guy came out (didn't introduce himself or asked how he can help) and said you can get another brand. I told him he's suppose to honor the price tag and his response was "i'm not here to lose money". Bottom line he didn't adjust the price. This is totally unacceptable. I dislike when people just try to get over. I'm not even sure he was the manager. I also noticed several items that were on the shelf outdated. Some of the best food ever in the Cuban sandwich shop. The seafood salads are wonderful. Everything has always been delicious. We also like the store which also sells homemade flans. The Queso is my favorite but they are all good. They sell homemade red and greed sauce which we like to use as a seasoning with beans because it is very salty. Great marinade for chicken also.
