Abbey Lodge - Bedroom

Abbey Lodge

My new wife and I just stayed at the Abbey Lodge on our recent stop through Killarney for our…read morehoneymoon. We were looking for a place that was a good home base for the Southwest Coast of Ireland, specifically the Dingle Peninsula. Well, this place was above and beyond our expectations. The service was superb! Make sure you take the time to get to know the owner John King, as he is extremely friendly, accommodating, and just a nice person to talk to. The breakfast was fantastic, and when John found out it was our honeymoon, he brought our breakfast to our room! Great service. The lodge also has a great location as we could walk to the town centre for food or beers (plenty of pubs) and we had walks to Ross Castle, Killarney National Park, and Lough Leane. We saw so many amazing places, just by walking from the Abbey Lodge. Also, we took a train from Dublin, and the Lodge is close to the train station, and if someone is an American scared about driving on the opposite side of the road, Killarney is an easy place to get your feet wet. The Budget Rental Car is right near the lodge, and you will meet another great man, Liam, who will go out of his way to help you. Rent the car, DRIVE TO DINGLE, walk around all of Killarney, and stay at the Abbey Lodge.

The owner, John King, was an excellent host. Breakfast is delicious and when John heard my sister was gluten intolerant, he had gluten-free pancakes with lemon for her. The pancakes came in a pre-made package and he gave the remaining 3 (from a package of 6) to my sister to take with her on the rest of the trip. The thoughtfulness of this gesture has stuck with us since not everywhere provides gluten free options besides yogurt and fruit. The lodge is located minutes away from downtown which has delicious restaurants and great shopping. It was an easy and safe walk to do. It is also located in a great location for seeing the rest of the Killarney area and heading up to the Dingle peninsula. We had not planned to go there, but the short drive was perfect and the views incredible. I highly recommend staying here and enjoying their wonderful hospitality!

I was welcomed with a lovely chat over tea and a scone by the innkeeper Rosaleen O'Leary! I really appreciated her taking time to get to know me and share her thoughts on Irish history and culture. My room was good sized, appealing and a great value. Showers were hot with good water pressure. The gardens on the property were just gorgeous - imagine Secret Garden type plantings. My stay included a complete hot Irish breakfast with lots of coffee, eggs and Irish bacon - similar to a fried ham. Mmmm. I enjoyed a morning walk down the road to Ross Castle, which I highly recommend. Who knew the advancements in medieval architecture and defense? Ross Castle Lodge B&B is adjacent to the Killarney National Park, and one may walk through the park to get to the 'town' of Killarney where you'll find lots of restaurants, pubs & shops. Booking was easy via email. Walkable distance to town and the train station - but a cab is easier for arrivals! They gave us great recommendations and also drove us to the bus station when we had to leave. Killarney was amazing! It was our favorite city in Ireland and we would love to go back. Plenty to do in the city with unique shops and restaurants. I would recommend renting bikes and riding into the national park.

Hazelwood was a great place to stay! When we arrived in Killarney, Nora insisted on picking us up from the train station, which was very nice of her as it would've been a bit of a walk with our suitcases. The room was comfortable and there was a great view of the mountains from one of the windows. Breakfast was delicious too! We had an option of cereals and fruit or a full cooked breakfast, which I enjoyed both mornings and was not disappointed! Nora and her husband even arranged for a tour company to pick us up at the house for a day tour of the Gap of Dunloe, which made our trip so easy! We slept in quite a bit our second morning at Hazelwood - recovering from an 11km horse ride and a few whiskeys the day before - and Nora was kind enough to make us breakfast even though it was late morning. We totally weren't expecting it, and it was very nice of her to accommodate us! Would definitely recommend this place!

It only operates around May thru October each year. Wifi Internet access is a bit slow but we have our own mobile hotspot so that's not a problem. Breakfast is delicious with good portion. The room is a bit small for four of us but expected. At least we have our private bathroom. Location is only a few minutes ride from town, and very close to the national park and the Ring of Kerry. Note that, like most places in Ireland, the B&B does not have A/C nor fan.
