Our experience with Killam...at first was really good, we rented a beautiful apartment and the supers were great. Four years after moving in, the faux hardwood floors were coming apart, they didn't get fixed. The toilet broke, they kinda fixed it...our front door was warped so bad that the lock didn't function and I couldn't unlock the door most times (so if I didn't have my spouse with me then I would have been shit out of luck). It didn't get fixed.
We were told the place was dog friendly, so after a few years we got a dog....and the weekly notices started, reminding you of the rules...getting approached by multiple people, multiple times to be told the "rules". Which were, we weren't allowed to have the dog in the elevator, the main lobby nor were we to use the front door with our dog. She had to be walked off property, which meant having to use the side doors to exit, which during winter...they were not maintained...so you had 70 year old senior citizens trying to walk on pure ice...off the property with their dog! All of this for the low low price of $1600 (and yes another rent increase this year!)
So, we were contemplating moving, as we had really outgrown the space of the apartment and the above really made the decision for us.
Our lease renewed May 01, we had to give notice by the end of Jan and it was Jan 31, so we had to act fast...we called Killams office, and spoke with a person (whose name started with a K, thats all we could remember), to find out how we give notice. We explained we want to leave at the end of April, which was our three months, but we asked, if there was an option, to stay an extra month, in case we don't find a place by the end of April. She said we can, all we do is in our request to give notice, we ask to go month to month. Then, at the end of March, we give notice again, as to whether or not we are staying for the month of May.
So, this we followed, we gave our notice, requesting month to month, it was approved and we began looking for a place. Luckily we found a house we loved, available for May 01, so we signed a new lease and gave our end of march notice to leave end of April...and it was declined.
At first we didn't panic, we thought it was a misunderstanding, so we called the office again and were out right denied that that conversation ever took place...that our request to go month to month meant we extended our lease for another month, to the end of May... (wtf, I have rented in NS for over 20 years and going month to month has NEVER been done that way)....
So now we had a new lease starting May 01 for $1550 and $1600 to Killiam, and they wouldn't approve our request, no matter how much we cried and tried to explain how this was not our fault, that we did what we were told to do, but it didn't matter any at all to this corporate cold piece of crap...
So our calls to fix the error started with Miss K at their office, who said there was nothing she would do so she gave us her manager. We spoke with her, who said while she can't say whether or not what we say is true...there is nothing she will do. So we escalated further and she gave us her manager....this is where the true face of Killam is revealed...this man, this person who talked and sounded like a human, was an empty shell with no soul..he was a rude, smug, corporate piece of shit! He put up a wall and that wall was NO, he said because we have no proof of this "conversation" he would not help us, he said that there was no way a member of their staff would ever tell this to us (calling us liars!!). We pleaded and explained, why would we sign a lease, if we had any thought to the fact that we extended our lease a month??.? We're not f***ing idiots! But nope, didn't matter, didn't matter that we had to "borrow" money as we had to pay out over $3000 for rent that month, nope, none of it mattered to him, all he could say was we were lying and there was nothing he would do for us...this persons name is Dan Sampson, if you're ever dealing with him, good f***ing luck!
I went on to social media and I ranted and posted complaints....and it went no where! They responded via Facebook, that they forwarded along my complaint, but I have heard nothing back, and its now June (so 3 months).
We did get our damage deposit back, so thats a good thing I guess, half of our loan is now paid off, only half to go....
They never did get back to us, and the fact that it was their staff who told us the process to follow, and then out right said we were liars, the fact that the customer service is practically nil, well it is nil, I mean the managers we spoke with wouldn't know customer service if it sat up and spat in their faces!
Overall, would not recommend, they do not upkeep their property, they do not provide accurate information and they do not have any customer service skills...at all. Picture a male doctor from the 1940's, treating an obese female patient....they didn't care. read more
