One of the classier places to grab a cocktail in the power and light area. Kill Devil offers a great assortment of cocktails in an intimate, sophisticated atmosphere. A group of friends and I came here to grab a cocktail last Friday night. Walking inside, I was impressed with the spacious room w/ chandeliers, leather booths, and live entertainment. We grabbed some seats and were quickly brought menus. Unfortunately, they only had one worker (the bartender) that night. So, we ended up having to go to the bar to order drinks. However, the bartender worked quickly and our drinks were made in a matter of minutes. I did not order any cocktails that night, but I got to sample the cocktails my friends ordered. All of them tasted great. Some of my favorites were The War of The Roses and The Kill Devil Punch. They were both not too strong (but you could still taste the alcohol), slightly sweet, and refreshing. The only downside of the night was the temperature of the club. It was hot, and, after an hour or so, we all got extremely uncomfortable. I hope this is not a reoccurring problem as I would only consider going here then with light clothing or with an intention to spend less than an hour here. Altogether, I enjoyed my time here at Kill Devil. It's something different and provides a more relaxing, swanky atmosphere than the standard bars/clubs in the area. Thank. The. Lord. This bar is EXACTLY what KC needs, and specifically what the Power and Light district needs. In a city without a ton of jazz options (despite calling itself a jazz town) this spot fills a definite niche and will be one of the hottest tickets in Kansas City. Wanna feel classy and sexy and awesome? Get thee to Kill Devil! So why does this place stand out compared to the other jazz bars in town? Well, primarily in the fact that instead of acting as a listening room, where you have your seat and you just sit there quietly while applauding politely every 10 minutes or so, this place seems to embrace the rowdy, sexy nature of a jazz bar! People are dancing and mingling and while they still appreciate the excellent musicians, they're not being held captive by the tunes. Bottom line: It's hard to have a bad time when you're listening to a 10 piece brass band. Additionally, the drink menu here is stellar. Kill Devil boasts the largest rum selection in KC, and will feature a number of punch options for both individuals or groups! These are Grade-A, hand-crafted cocktails, and the price tag reflects it. But it's all part of the atmosphere. I wouldn't want to come here and drink crappy beer or a well vodka soda. Speaking of atmosphere, the decor of this place is great. All dark woods, it nods to the past but isn't overly themey. I love that they have checkerboards in the corner, it's a nice tip of the hat to Cuban/Puerto Rican/South Floridian culture, without coming off too strong. And the staff all look impeccable. A great new addition to the Power & Light district, the Kilk Devil is a Prohition-era speak easy with a cozy atmosphere & great cocktails. We went on Prohibition Night, a celebration of the repeal. Starting with the Kill Devil Punch to drink, we loved all the old-fashioned cocktails. While I'm not usually a fan of gin, which was in several of the drinks we sampled, everything was very well balanced and easy drinking. The Bees Knees (10$) was a bit sweet for me, but I loved the special cocktail of the night which featured lime juice and gin. The absinthe cocktail had a very strong anise flavor so beware! We shared the cheese plate $10. They offered a good selection of about 5 cheeses. No one at the table was a fan of the blue cheese offering though. A friend had the ham croquettes, which she enjoyed. Overall if you looking for a fun night out with great music & a nice dance floor, I highly recommend Kill Devil. read more

I love this place. From the leather chairs to the swanky atmosphere, this is easily one of the classiest places to get a cocktail. On the weekends, they have live music although often, there are also events that can get a little pricey (think, $20 covers). Their cocktail list is impressive and worth the $10+ prices you'll find. This place is connected to the Gallery Event space, so sometimes it can be closed for private parties. If your heart is set on going some evening in particular (I can't think of a better place to bring some out of town guests to show them a swanky KC time) I would call ahead. On that note, they do have valet parking since as most Kansas Citians know, parking in P&L can be a hassle. Do yourself a favor and park at Union Station and ride the street car down. There's a stop right by this location. So to sum up, I love this place's swanky 1920's vibe and great cocktails. They have food too in you are so inclined. It can get pretty crowded and pretty loud on the weekends (jazz music!) so keep that in mind. But if you haven't, this is a must-go down town! read more

Kill Devil is definitely a good time. The atmosphere is dark and intimate, but is often livened up by an awesome jazz band. The walls are all wood paneling, the seats are spacious, fancy rugs cover the floors, and the waitresses walk around in flapper dresses. It's the perfect place to go when you want to have a good time but don't want to trip over slop tarts at P&L. And the bartenders work fast and furiously so you don't sit there waiting forever for a drink. Here's a fun fact. "Kill devil" was actually a name for rum hundreds of years ago (Now don't you feel smarter). So of course this place offers a wide variety of the adult beverage. However, do not let the fact that you don't like rum get in the way of you coming here. They do, after all, have other drinks as well. Disclaimer: I have nothing against slop tarts. It is my firm belief that downtown KC would not be the same without them. read more

Shattered, Disappointed, and simply Let Down. Here's the thing. Hotel Rieger is the problem. The expectations are so high that it probably was half of the problem. The drinks were fine, the service was friendly, the music was in line but somehow the whole thing just left me wanting for more. ...or Less! Kill Devil should be better. Ok, I finally gave this place another couple of tries. My reaction upon my first visit was that Manifesto is far and away more impressive but that I liked it ok. I finally tried a drink, The Pendergast, and it was delicious. Over $10, but delicious so I'm ok with spending that on occasion. Let me be honest and say, I will still go to Manifesto over Kill Devil, but this was a little better of an experience than my first so I will go back when friends want to. What I like: The drink menu is varied and delicious with some classics and some originals to go along with their decent beer and liquor choices. I like that they have music, especially the dj who spins with a live drummer keeping the beat behind him. They have always taken good care of my friends and me when we go in as fellow service industry workers. The bartenders are talented and have a flare that isn't showy but appreciated by all watching. They take care in the details and I like that. They know what they're doing. What I don't like: They seem to close when they want to. The hours may say 3am but if it's slow and 1:45, they're closing up shop. (at least the one time when I actually stayed until after 1am) I've heard this complaint from others too. I definitely understand being slow and not able to justify labor and all that, but if you're closing up early, others in the service industry are going to notice. I'll still go but others may not want to come if you're always closing up right when their shifts are done. Also, the music is wayyy too loud. We had four or five of us at the bar and I had trouble hearing the person beside me, much less the ones two people down. We finally moved to a table in the back and could hear one another much better. So, I don't hate it, but I'm not rushing to get there before the crowd on the weekends. It's just not quite my style with the loud music. The menu and the quality bartenders are of the caliber to keep me coming back , but the overly-loud music and unpredictable hours keep it from being an 'A' kind of review for me. Definitely check it out but try out KC's other classic cocktail destinations while your'e at it. Kill Devil is not the only place to try out and I haven't been impressed enough yet to make it a main staple in my list of evening destinations. read more

B+ I really want to give this place an A- kind of review, I really do. They did everything well except for one thing, but that will come later and I'm not even really sure how about what to write about it. There are many places in the Power and Light District, where the Kill Devil Club makes its home, that lack originality and character. Hell, almost all of the places in the P & L lack those two qualities. The Kill Devil Club does not. It is certain to become a KC Original and it most definitely fills a niche in the District. Live Jazz, lively Jazz that makes you want to stand up and dance instead of putting you to sleep, greats you as you arrive. To the right and directly in front of you are giant windows with inspired views of the downtown KC cityscape. To your left is a long, dark, swanky bar where the mixoligists (and they are true mixoligists) make you classic, handcrafted cocktails. The night I was in the service was impeccable. They were slammed and it took a second to get a drink but they got around to you in time. The wait is definitely worth it. The Kill Devil Club is a welcome addition to the community and is now the destination of the Power and Light District. Do yourself a favor and make plans now for a sinful night out on the town at the Kill Devil Club. (Since my only experience of the Kill Devil Club was on opening night, I am going to give them a free pass in regards to my comment at the top of my review. We came here after a wedding reception. The place was pretty awesome, there was a live jazz group. The lighting is dark and intimate, the drinks are fancy and have a fancy price to match with them. I ordered a Ramos Gin Fizz which is usually pretty difficult to find in any bar. It would be good for a private event of less than 8 people. Warning, they will not let you do the limbo with a tie, we tried and only 2 people made it through (successfully) before security told us to stop. Overall a good time! read more

Kill Devil Club continues to grow and host different types of events with a stellar cast of musicians and DJs. The cocktails are a pretty good selection, yet a bit tame compared to other local cocktail slingin' joints around town. If you're downtown and want some highly entertaining live music accompanied by a cocktail (that isn't a redbull and vodka), this is your place. Pick a night where there's likely to be dancing, and you've got yourself a party. Thankfully there's a bit more class to this establishment than the other bars in the P&L, but it doesn't mean the drinks aren't strong and the time isn't good. read more

This is a pretty neutral rating, and for good reason -- my take on the place is pretty darn neutral. Let's rewind a few weeks -- a friend wanted to meet us here, but our plans had changed, and it took him 30 minutes to flag down a server, tab out, and meet us outside. (This will come into play later.) $10 cover to get into the place; found out the cover only kicked in after 10pm. But, I didn't mind -- after all, I was visiting with friends and such. Went upstairs, and the place was busy -- crowded, but not overly such. Band started a few minutes after I arrived, and it pretty much killed any chance of conversation we'd have. I love live music, and I love jazz -- but the band quality and the volume effectively killed any chance of conversation I would have had with my friends. Menu was a little more limited than I expected. Prices were pricey; in line with other P&L places, but more fancy (and pricey) than typical bar grub. Drink menu was pretty extensive. As with my friend, though, tab took a little while to arrive when we needed it. It wasn't as horribly bad as his experience, but it was definitely a wait. I really want to like the place, and I do plan on going back at some time or another to make sure I'm giving it a fair shake. It felt like it was trying way too hard to be a hip happening jazz bar, when really, it just needed to relax. read more

Finally getting around to writing a review for Kill Devil. The 1st time we went was for their opening night and that was blast. We had enough people RSVP we were able to get a table and get a free Rum Punch Bowl that was amazing. We had 10 people and we all ordered apps and drinks. The apps I tried were the ceviche, Kobe meatballs, and pork sliders were all very good but pricey for small plates. The drinks are very strong and also a little pricey. That night I stuck with different Rum drinks and they were all good, but you can get drinks just as good other places and a few dollars cheaper. Went back a couple times after work and we had always had decent service. Now this last time we went for New Year's Eve Party 2013 and it was not what was promised at all. 1. Doors were supposed to open at 8pm. They were not ready and didn't open until 8:30pm and there was no, "Hey we are running late, or give us a few minutes." They just ignored us. There was a line 30 people deep by the time they opened the doors. Now I will say I did talk to the GM when was asking the coat checkers to move their racks and he did check the two of us in on his clip board and left. So we told every person that walked up that they were running late. At 8:30pm he was nice enough to check our party of 7 in first and get us seated. 2. Our waitress came over and brought our punch bowl which came with the extra $20 we paid per person for a table. That was on top of the $40 each ticket to get in. The punch bowl was a 1/3 of the size it was on opening night. We were shocked to say the least. That was not worth $20 per person extra. Also we asked to move tables and it took 5 people to get approval to move us one table over. 3. When we moved the waitress became confused and we had to hunt one down and ask her to take care of us. She did a 1/2 ass job and it was easier and faster to go to the bar and get our drinks. Which we ended up doing. About the 3rd trip to the bar she realized she was ignoring us and finally started to help us. 4. There was an open bar from 9pm-10pm the same time the buffet opened, so we split up and sent 4 for food and 3 for drinks. So those of us that went to get drinks the bartender said one per person per trip. We said what does it matter it is open for an hour, just give us 2 each and that will say you time. After asking a manager if he could do this, the manager his okay and he helped us. Huffing the whole time. 5. The buffet which had a good selection on it was cold. Kobe sliders and chicken should not be server cold. It should have at least been warm. They should have also had two areas set up instead of having a 100 people stand in line to herd through. The food was good, just cold. 6. The advertised prizes on the hour every hour and did not do this. I went and asked the manager about it and he just blew me off. We will go back from drinks during happy hour, but not pay $60.00 a person for a party there. Highlight - the band was amazing and we danced a lot. We had a blast with our friends, because we rolled with the punches, but there were some upset people there. It was fun, just not what we expected. read more

Punch. One word. Punch. There is this spirit that is magically made and aged mysteriously in a barrel somewhere under sunshine and rainbows where quadricorns play and lepricorns stay. It comes out in a cake dome. Spirits in a upside down cake dome. With blackberries and cinnamon sticks, and pineapples floating around in it. I personally got all my friends to use the cinnamon sticks as a straw. It worked. I highly recommend it. Also, its actually economically feasible. The music is always great. The bands are wonderful. I was here early 12/14 and the piano player (although he didn't seem to have a large repertoire of music he did try to sing requests) was pretty good and funny. Our group ordered two of their $50+ punch bowls. The presentation was nice, but the execution was awful. They were both horrible tasting and I couldn't drink either one. I would recommend sticking with your usual cocktail or beer and not branching out and trying one of their mixed drinks. I would definitely go back here though! read more

Here's the thing. There is much better options for LISTENING to Jazz in KC. However, if you want a fancy, fun night out while there is some lounge-y jazz music in the background playing, then yes definitely check it out. One of the nicer looking spots in town (love the view of the buildings around you from inside the club) and great drinks. It's a little pricey for KC standards but cheap if you compare what you'd pay in any big city for a similar venue. The dress code is lax (a bit annoying given how nice the club is supposed to be that people do flip flops and such) but it ranges from super casual to very dressy. All in all, if you want to get dressed up, have great drinks, and spend some time in P&L, this is the place to go. Great place to go have a night on the town. read more

I finally made it inside Kill Devil Club on Friday. I won a happy hour party there on the Facebook page and gathered a group to try it with me. We headed over for our 5-8p party and were greeted at the door, asked to sign in and given wrist bands identifying us as members of the group. The friendly hostess then led us over to a table and got us each free welcome glasses of champagne. As with most places in P&L, the more people you bring in, the better the deals and freebies you get. My group was only about 1/2 a dozen, but we did qualify for a free charcuterie plate. There were some nice cheeses in the mix, including yummy Drunken Goat, lots of sliced meats and olives. You also can get a free rum punch with a Yelp check in, which I did. Tasty, but just a hair too sweet for my tastes. I did try two other house cocktails. Both were intricate, interesting adult drinks. They were not cheap, however. My group also ordered a few $5 happy hour small plates to try. The bruschetta was well received, as were the meatballs. They have a very attractive ceviche presentation, but it was very small. My only complaint was the service. While everyone was friendly and nice, we felt a little bit like we had to hunt people down to get tabs and place second drink orders. I'm not sure why that was, since there were only three other tables there. I'm sure this is a glitch that will work itself out with more time. I like the old speak-easy feel of the place. Went on New Year's Eve and had the corner, circular booth. Best spot in the club, I must say. The band was good, drinks were great, food was okay, and the service was FANTASTIC. The people who work there seem to really enjoy being there. Our waitress was fun and personable, and the manager was enthusiastic and friendly. Everyone took care of us, and it was a great time. I loved the Kill Devil Rum Punch. I'll reserve a 5th star for after I've been on a normal night, to see how it compares. I would definately go back again for NYE, though! read more

Kill Devil is a really dark, cool bar. Dark wood, dark paint, etc. When we went, there was a band playing who was very good (covered lumineers, of monsters and men, kings of leon), but strangely empty. Drinks are great and the service was really good too. Only problem was the band was so loud, we couldn't ask the bartender questions about the drinks or get recommendations, which I love doing. The band was good, so I was ok with it, but it definitely wasn't a conversation type place. Went there the first night they were open to the public. We loved it! The bartenders were good. Only cretic is that the bartenders should really know the drinks a bit better and be able to make suggestions. The one guy we had knew how to describe the drinks, but didn't really know what they tasted like as much and couldn't make any suggestions for other drinks that were not on the menu. I think he just needs to be a bit more seasoned. The music was great. The food was awesome. Love the up beat of it. The decor was nice. My first vibe of the place when we walked in was that it was trying a little too hard to be a Las Vegas casino center bar. The decor is pretty swanky, but it feels like it's trying a little too hard. (I think some of that may be the contrast of dark hole-in-the-wall speakeasy decor combined with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the street.) But that was the extent of my negative judgement. They totally win on every other front. The service was fantastic. Apparently this was the busiest night they have had in a while (or ever) due to an event in the adjacent rental space. But the waitresses completely kept their cool and tag-teamed their customers when the other got busy. The manager was bouncing around clearing tables, delivering drinks, and checking in on everyone at full speed. The music was great and went all night. The food was super tasty. The prices are date-night prices rather than neighborhood dive bar prices, but that was totally expected with the atmosphere and the quality of the drinks. I came in to have a late dinner and cocktail. My server Emily was awesome. I appreciated her recommendations and hospitality. Management you have a jewel. Emily suggested the Spring Rolls, Kill-Devil Punch and Rum Cake. Everything was delicious. I requested extra butter and a shot of rum for the cake as it was a bit dry but overall I would go back again. My drink was perfectly made strong but complimented the meal. The ambiance was amazing as opening act Eddie Moore And The Outer Circle played jazz and soul. I felt as I was back in DC at Bohemian Caverns. They were that good. Do follow them on facebook/instagram and check them out. Later that night they played soca, reggae and african beats. If you like to dance as I do you will be out of the floor dancing to close. We asked about food about 1015. Bartender said the kitchen was closing soon .... We asked about any happy hours ... We got a very vague answer. Generally seemed annoyed. We had a 30th birthday party at Kill Devil on a busy Saturday night, they were more than accommodating to offering our guests an all-inclusive package or letting them pay by the drink. They set us up in the bar area and not one of our guests waited more than 5 minutes for a drink, paid a cover or had a mistake on their tabs. This bar has the most well thought out cocktails I've ever had, however the part that sets it aside is the Neverending stream of waitresses that excel at dropping the ball. I do adore this place, but I'm so tired of the horrible service. On the last visit I reiterated multiple time that the card I was giving them was just for holding our drinks, and we would be splitting up the drinks when we're ready for the checks. Unfortunately it resulted in my entire parties bill being put on my card when i waved over the waitress to divide the bill amongst the group of us. Huge fan of this place. EXACTLY what the P&L needs, an authentic , non-chain bar with some soul, class and patrons that are not rocking tribal arm band tattoos and Affliction shirts. Tried this place for the first time last night with my wife and two other couples. One of the worst service experiences I have ever encountered. One waitress trying to accommodate 15+ tables. She brought the wrong drinks and then not only refused to replace them but also dropped a "F*** You, I'm getting the manager". Manager (male) came over and escalated the situation by confronting my friend's wife. Tough guy confronts a 100 pound female over a mistake his waitress made to begin with. It's disappointing because I had high hopes for this place. Great location and a unique concept, but I doubt it will be around long. I should have known it would be awful when the valet guys are handing out free cover coupons. Please, do yourself a favor and take a pass. read more

Love the Kill Devil, it's a swanky, sexy kind of place. Others have noted the quality of the live jazz, but I love that they host the Burlesque Downtown Underground once a month for a live burlesque revue on their stage. It's a tiny stage with the tables right on top of it, so, you're right there with the performers! I like the creativity of the cocktails & the food menu is small but excellent. Waitress wasn't too friendly. We ordered a bowl of the Kill Devil's punch and she offered no help in making our selection. When we asked if we could try the punch she replied, "you can buy a glass". The glass is $9, the bowl is $52. We bought it anyways and it wasn't anything to scream about that is for sure. The entertainment was a younger jazz group that is unknown and they played one cover song and the rest were unknown originals that were lackluster. We had our wedding reception here!!! Absolutely perfect. Had about 70 people, rented the whole place out on a saturday night. Amber (event coordinator) and homer (GM) could not have been more professional, thorough and FUN! The space is so cool... Very swanky vibe, the food was great, and the drinks are even better.
