Once known ads Brendan's bar, now Charlie Browns - Students and unfriendly locals…read more The bar is well up to standard but the staff are the most ignorant I have ever met anywhere, it must be from dealing with students all the time. It is more or less a campus bar beside the Athlone College. IF YOU ARE YOUNG, you will meet other young mad people there, so it may be fun for you as you will be too drunk to notice the staff, in that case go there!

I visited this pub three times and have had three different experiences whilst there, the only…read moreconsistent things were the amazing drink prices (Pitcher of fosters, 3 pints, 8 euro / 2 shots of Jager and energy drink, 6 euro) and the flock of crazy young people throughout the pub. Luckily the cheap drink outweighs the company as the drunker I get, the less I care. Seeing as the pub is right by AIT I was already expecting it to mostly be serving young students, what I was not expecting was to see multiple people dancing on the tables (and bar staff blatantly ignoring this) on a Tuesday night followed by a significantly older gentleman creeping up beside them for a feel. Smoking area is lovely and big, they have a big screen showing sports, a jukebox which had a great selection of songs including metal/rock and two pool tables. They seem to have a number of DJs on various nights, when visiting on Wednesday night the music was Techno and very enjoyable. Overall, pretty laid back pub, would enjoy more if I was younger (I'm 25) and possibly really really drunk.

Of all the pubs in Mullingar, this one has always been my favourite because of the homely feel…read more They also used to have some good beer, namely bottled English ales available but I believe this is no longer the case coming from someone who was in more recently. The bar itself seems like an old man's bar, in fact it is full of old men usually. I fell in love with The Old Stand when I popped in there one wet and cold winters day while I was waiting for my wife to come in on the train. The fire was roaring and there was a cat wandering around. Myself being a cat person meant that the cat wandered over to me and jumped up on to my lap for a cuddle. When my wife got in I had her come meet me and we stayed for a drink. Next door is the off license where they have a wonderful collection of Whiskey and some good world beers. The heated and covered beer garden outside is quite big and attracts the younger crowd. There is one of those punching machines in there if you fancy a test of strength. I must try and get back some time and see what it's like these days. Unfortunately even though I only live 10 minutes drive away, it is over €20 each way in a taxi making it much cheaper to get the bus to Dublin for a night out.

The Yelp info said that the pub is closed on Sundays but I didn't believe it and I was right. Nice pub with large selection of mainstream beers (I had a pint of Beamish), plenty of rooms at two bars. I didn't explore whether the beer garden was open. No cats this time.

Ever since my granny passed away these kind of dinners don't come around that often…read more Then again this is Yelp so I will shelve the grief and hop to reviewing the beef... A sunny afternoon during a late Indian September Summers day well spent sat in the beer garden of Jim Doyle & Sons local pub. The roast beef dinner you get here for €11.95 is bovinely beautiful in taste, texture, presentation and size. None of your scabby portions of Beef here, its a portion fit for a King which was as tender as an Elvis Presley number and also a hell of a lot leaner depending on the year... They do 3 pints of Guinness for €12.50 aswell if you pay upfront, you get little plastic tokens to pay for your drink if you go for one of these package deals. Luckily on this particular time share the sun was on our side too, which paved the way for a majestic afternoon sinking Arthurs finest watching the sunset in Bray. I think the picture literally speaks for itself and it cries "EAT ME.....DRINK ME". Sometimes Bray can be a bit of a wonderland (weather permitting) even if nobody knows who the Fork Alice is ;-)

I had the temerity to request that the volume on the commentary be turned on ( this was in the back of the bar). After waiting for 5 mins I asked the bartender. He snapped back in a very ungracious manner that " he was busy " .This sentiment was also echoed by a waitress who was behind the bar. Her tone was as rude as the bartender. Keep in mind that the bar was not even half full at the time. Anyway , another few minutes elapsed before finally getting some commentary on the game. I finished my pint and departed. Won't be coming back anytime soon ...certainly if those very ignorant members of staff are behind the bar. I doubt by their conduct and attitude that either member of staff would care about that but possibly the people who put up the capital for this business might. The price of alcohol in pubs has gotten so expensive . It might behove those people employed in the bar trade keep that in mind. Customers don't need to be treated in such a rude and ignorant manner( as I was today) and pay 7.30 for a pint.

From taking the drinks to delivering them it was very very slow. The food orders and service was snail's paste. The quality of the food was very unsatisfactory. My lamb köftes were cooked to the point that they tasted more like a charcoal!!! My husband could only eat half of his smash burger with a funny sauce. I noticed that they had oyster bar. After we order our meals I asked if I could get 2 Achill oysters to taste. I was told our meals were being prepared. I said that I do not mind getting them all together . 40 minutes later our meals arrived but no oysters.!!!! One shacks an oyster... It does not need too much preparations... I also asked no other sauce than a lemon. I mean!!!! You tell me what type of an excuse can they have. They offered us free desert. We do not eat desert! We do not want free stuff! Just deliver the food in edible condition and the drinks timely... Well they failed in both! I hope that you do not fall into this situation. So be aware! BTW Ireland is very beautiful, but do not expect tasty food unless you like fish & chips & stews.
