If you are considering the Goddard School of Sparks Maryland as a daycare for your child(ren), you…read moremay want to think twice. My husband and I selected this daycare because of its great reviews and other parents telling us how wonderful it was. However, we found that the Goddard School of Sparks did not meet our expectations. We were constantly called about minor illnesses and trivial incidents. We would take our children to the pediatrician who was astounded that a daycare would send a child home for such a small thing. Staff, and more specifically the directors, make a lot of medical accusations that are consistently wrong. Leading us and many other parents to argue with the directors, which we saw more than a few times, in the office or in the parking lot. The directors would also not respect doctors notes, and despite a board certified pediatrician writing that a child is ok to return to daycare/school, they would still force children to stay home. It is difficult to think of how many times our children were in a full week of daycare from the ages of 6 months to 2 years without receiving a phone call. One of the more concerning things for us was the fact that we were told, "to not to have long conversations (which was considered more than asking about their day) with the teachers about your child, since the teachers are busy at drop off and pick up." Which makes no sense since the teacher is in the classroom with your child for hours on end, not the directors. If something is going on, I want to speak with the person who spends the most amount of time with my child. Additionally, myself and a few other parents have been told we spend too much time at drop off or pick up, which directly contradicts their open door policy. Because of these "rules" we encountered major inconsistencies between teachers and directors. Interestingly, one of the director's children was always in the front office and out of the classroom spending time with her which was ironic considering how ourselves and other parents could not spend more than a few minutes with out kids. Classrooms are pushed to the legal max of head count with children to staff ratio. We understand this is a business, but the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests a classroom size of 8, and there are 12 kids in a classroom around the ages 2-3. That is a 50% increase over the recommended limit. Again I would expect this from a cheaper school. You would think, if this is such a prestigous school, they would be following the American Academy of Pediatrics evidence based practice information and spin this into saying "we use the American Academy of Pediatrics information to better support your child". But all they care about is your money. We will be direct and state, the directors of this school are not qualified to be in their positions. In fact, when things got bad, they had to hire an administrative director to settle things, which speaks volumes about the three directors "who are in charge". These directors make decisions and assumptions about children, when they have no medical or childhood education training from a college or university. When our children were babies, the teachers of the first three classrooms were great, but the directors made it difficult, and we want to be clear that we have no complaints about those teachers. However, teachers from the older children's classrooms were lackluster and underqualified for what was to be expected from the amount of money we were paying per month. Once our children were older and in the fourth classroom and upward, things became really unprofessional from the directors. Even one of the directors accused one of our children of being aggressive. And yet when we would ask what happened, they seemed to always know what our child was doing wrong and never telling us anything he was doing a great job of completing. Furthermore, whenever my eldest child was "doing something wrong" they always knew what he was doing and always somehow managed to see the bad behavior, but when our child came home with a bruise or injury, the directors or teachers wouldn't know what happened. Another noticeable problem is the obvious teacher swapping and movement. Teachers would switch classrooms and would be placed out of their comfort zone. Teachers were used to a certain age group would be placed in a different age group. This would lead to problems with the children because the teachers didn't know how to handle problems or situations and it lacks consistency for children. When considering the Goddard School's child to teacher ratio, the teachers should be more interactive with the kids when outside. Many times we came outside to pick up our kids, and all the teachers are in a large group talking to one another, ignoring the children. The management team was friendly and seemed to look into things when there were issues in the end we thought they'd be letting the 3 year old teacher go and they did not so we left. We were told they would be starting another 3 year old room in May but we did not wait to find out if this happened since we couldn't trust the care of our child any longer. Other teachers seemed to be friendly and kids seemed happy but we were not happy with the 3 year old teacher.

They also did not follow their own set of rules in their own handbook about giving deposits back. A vast amount of families had been owed next years deposits but the school decided to not abide by their own rules, leaving these families out of a lot of $. I have been a parent in the Davenport community for the past two years and my son is starting his…read more3rd year tomorrow. We are VERY excited!!! Before sending my son to Davenport, I visited A LOT of preschools. I can say that I couldn't find a stronger preschool or a better preschool for my son than Davenport. My husband and I are very picky and I can tell you that our son has thrived so much in this learning environment. Our son is a stronger critical thinker, more curious about lots of new ideas and concepts, and most important to us a better human because of his experience at Davenport. Obviously, as parents we talk to him about being kind and compassionate but Davenport helped him live out the principles we've been teaching him in his inclusive classroom. Our son has been exposed to students with learning differences and he's learned how to be in community with all types of learners. We are so grateful for that. I know that he will be a better community member in his next environment because of the exposure he received at Davenport. Additionally, our experience with the leadership has been very positive. When we first toured the school, we shared that we may have a foster child in our care due to the some challenges facing a family member. Liz and the team were incredibly supportive and were open to that possibility. I was so grateful for that. While the young boy didn't come to live with us, I had comfort and slept better at night knowing that if he had come, he would have had a home at Davenport. I also appreciated how forthright and transparent the leadership was when the Towson campus closed. I can only imagine how difficult that situation was for Liz and the team but I appreciated how they shared information about the campus closure and transition to Sparks before our enrollment forms were due. They had multiple parent meetings, made themselves available for individual meetings, and stayed in constant contact with the Towson community. I couldn't have asked for more out of the team. And they did all this while dealing with their own experiences of loss. Because of our previous research, it wasn't even a question. We were going to Davenport Sparks! And we made that decision even though my husband has a 90 minute commute to pick up our son in the evening. I have also found them to be incredibly supportive of my son. They have always put him in the right classes to foster his development. They really know what they are doing when they pair students with teachers and they set up classes. Each child has a different personality and yet I have always found they have the right mix and my son always has a great community of students and a great teacher. I have loved his teacher each and every year!!! Finally, I have found the leadership to be very open. For example, diversity in the student body and faculty is very important to me. I've shared my commitment to diversity and the importance of diversity. The leadership took my commitment to heart and I am so proud of the increased diversity I've seen in the school community over the past few years. After being highly recommended by our neighborhood we decided to try this daycare for our younger…read moreson. When he first started overall we were happy when he was in the 1 year old room. We had a few minor issues but discussed them with the staff and seemed to be better. Our biggest problems started when our son was moved into the 2 year old room. The teachers in that room were nice but very young and the only reason i mention age is they didn't seem to have a lot of experience. Our son spoke at home but we only learned months after our son had been in the class that he didn't say anything while there not even "Hi" or other little words.He started acting out and that was when it finally came out that he did not speak. I've never been a child educator or worked in daycare but having been around many younger children i know by two most kids say at least a few words. The teachers said they were trying to work with our son after they learned he did speak at home but we made the decision to eventually leave the daycare. The staff was friendly and said things we wanted to hear but many were very young and looked to me for ideas on things to try. We were told their class followed a schedule everyday but whenever I was in the building it seemed to be just playing. Having boys i've found that structure has definitely been more beneficial to them for learning than play based. We put our son in another daycare that seemed to be more structured and once our son became more comfortable he was speaking in class and the new class was definitely a better fit. This school does some special programming for the kids which is nice but definitely could use a bit more variety with different teachers and their experience level.
