I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was honestly one of the most unethical and…read moremisleading experiences I've had with a healthcare provider. I recently moved to Downtown Los Angeles and decided to try a local dental office instead of continuing to drive to my longtime dentist in the Valley. I thought I found a trustworthy office, especially since the receptionist and doctor were Iranian like me, which made me feel more comfortable initially. Unfortunately, that trust was completely misplaced. From the beginning, the receptionist was oddly pushy and pressured me to come in the same day despite me clearly saying I had a long workday and was exhausted. Looking back, that should have been my first red flag. Before my appointment, I sent over my insurance card. At absolutely no point did anyone inform me that this doctor was OUT OF NETWORK. No warning. No transparency. Nothing. When I arrived, they immediately proceeded with scans and X-rays without clearly explaining costs or coverage. They provided with a false estimate for my review, no words again at all again the costs may change based off the fact that we are out of network. I was then pressured into an expensive "deep cleaning" after being told that if I didn't do it, I could potentially end up with severe health consequences, even cancer. Fear-based tactics in a dental office are completely unacceptable. I paid around $1,300 out of pocket that same day for the treatment they strongly pushed. Then, a month later, I received an additional surprise bill for over $600 because, surprise, the office was out of network and many services were not covered. What made this even worse was the complete lack of professionalism afterward. When I tried contacting the office to discuss the billing discrepancy, my calls were ignored. I specifically asked to speak with the receptionist who handled my intake and insurance information, and I was repeatedly told she was "busy" and that she would call me back. She never did. Instead, I later received an email containing a completely different explanation of the charges and why I supposedly owed an additional $600. The explanations were inconsistent, unclear, and did not align with what was communicated during my visit. The issue is not whether I can afford the bill. I can. The issue is the principle, the lack of transparency, and the unethical way this office conducts business. I have been to multiple dentists throughout my life and have NEVER experienced a situation where an office withheld out-of-network information after receiving my insurance in advance, while simultaneously pushing expensive procedures without full financial disclosure. Patients deserve honesty, transparency, and informed consent....not pressure, scare tactics, and surprise bills afterward.

Two other dentists advised against drilling into a new crown and said it should be replaced by the original dentist at no cost since I had just got it done. After months of back-and-forth, this office finally offered bleaching in-house. I was told that if bleaching didn't fix it, they would replace the crown at no cost. I paid $120 for bleaching, and while it slightly improved the color, the discoloration is still visible. When it came time to replace it, they changed their position and said they would have to charge DOUBLE what I originally paid because insurance wouldn't cover a crown on the same tooth and I was slightly outside a year -- even though the delay was caused by their runaround. So despite their original promise to replace it if the bleaching didn't correct the color they were now charging me more than the original crown. The front desk is overall nice, but - it's just a very unprofessional dental office and It's also in a horrible part of DTLA. DO NOT RECOMMEND - go somewhere else.

I liked her initially because she was receptive and numbed me from the get go. I was on track and doing fillings in small bits which was fine, because the pain and time was manageable. I did not care that they were taking my insurance to the cleaners. In 2023 I got a call that Dr Hannigan called in sick for the day of my appointment and I never rescheduled. I was charged a no show fee. I came back in 2025, I asked if she remembered me, she said yes. Then proceeded to dig at my gums without numbing them. I stopped her immediately and asked for numbing, she responded that she didn't have time, and that I would need to come back. I almost left then and there, but she told me she would do a gentle cleaning in one area. That was true for about 15 minutes. I told her that I was at my pain threshold, she responded with a lecture that started with her saying, "Im not lecturing you but... ". I got up and left. I was thrilled when I found Dr. Hanigan, whose office is located in the beautiful PacMutual building in DTLA. They also have an office in Encino. Dr. Hanigan has been practicing for over 30 years and seems to be very efficient at dental work. In addition to having one filling repaired, I had my teeth cleaned on a second appointment. I was expecting a hygienist as per other offices, but Dr. Hanigan, herself, cleaned my teeth! She did it thoroughly and swiftly. When I called for an appointment they didn't have an opening for another two months. However, I was able to get on their cancellation list. At first I thought they wouldn't call back, but they did and I was able to get in pretty quickly. So don't be discouraged if you call and there isn't an available appointment right away. It's likely they can get you in but you have to be flexible and not choosy when they call you back. Myra, the front office person, is great at working with you and very helpful.

Thankfully I got to DTLA Dental on time because they told me that all 4 of my wisdom teeth had severe cavities in them and needed to be extracted. And I know what you're thinking, so many dental places recommend wisdom teeth extraction to make money but not here. They were recommending me other Oral Surgeons to go to because they just really wanted me to get it taken care of. Unfortunately I'm stupid and lazy and did not get it taken care of so the doctor took it into her own hands and after I visited for another cleaning, was like "ima just do these top two myself since you still haven't gone to the OS". It was gross. Took the poor doctor 20+ minutes to extract one tooth because my wisdom tooth was rotted and decayed so much that it kept chipping away and breaking into pieces. I saw the tooth that was pulled out afterwards and not even joking, it looked like a shark tooth with how pointy and jagged and broken apart it looked. ew. Anyways, tl;dr, everybody is incredibly nice. The doctor goes above and beyond for her patients. After moving to the Arts District (after losing our home in the Eaton Fire), I looked for a dentist in our new area and found DTLA Dental & Implant. I was ready for a terrible consultation considering how long it had been. My diagnosis wasn't bad at all - a couple of small cavities they wanted to keep an eye on, and a teeth cleaning that actually was done well and fairly pain free. The price was reasonable, and they didn't upsell me on anything and I got an appointment for 6 months down the line. They gave me some great advice - recommending a waterpik which I got right away. I ended up making an appointment for my husband and he had the same experience. We're happy to have found our regular dentist now!
