It looks like we made the biggest mistake of our lives by letting Dr. Khoo operate on my husband. Dr. Khoo talks a good game and is very charismatic however it appears that he really only cares about money and not his patients. This wouldn't be so bad if the work he did was acceptable but it's not. My husband had surgery 3 years ago and it looks like he will have to have it redone by a qualified surgeon. When my husband showed mri's of the surgery Dr. Khoo performed, other surgeons were appalled. My husband went to Dr. Khoo for an outpatient procedure which turned into 3 surgeries and a raging antibiotic infection which required intravenous drugs for 4 months. When complications from the first surgery appeared Dr. Khoo was nowhere to be found. It took a week of torment to even get him to talk to us. The whole experience was terrifying - I was not sure my husband was going to live. It also cost us tons of money in lost wages for both me and my husband. I was afraid to leave his side during his months in the hospital. Dr. Khoo also falsified medical records and claimed my husband fell which caused some problems. WARNING! The Infection is back ( or maybe was not entirely eradicated the 1st time). After surgery with Dr Khoo my mother suffered severe infection at location of surgery L3/L4, was on a pick line delivering antibiotics directly to the heart. She almost died. Now we just discovered some infection remained in the bone, and has spread. L3/L4 have completely collapsed, L5 is degenerate, L2 is narrowing and infection degeneration spreading to L1. Dr. Khoo is as Yelp put's it "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" and that is on many levels. Before I go into talking all about him (Which I do) I have to talk about his staff. I cannot tell you how wonderful all of the staff/girls are that work for him. He is very busy and they definitely keep the ship running. They are the sweetest office staff ever. They return calls promptly as well as emails. The night before my surgery I could contact them at anytime if I had too, and they are always so kind when I come in or call. Sometimes I have had to call several times in the same day about various issues and most places would get irritated about that...not here the girls are so kind, patient and empathtic. I love them. They have been amazing during this process. Which brings me to t Neurosurgeons are generally very monotone and confusing, but Dr.Khoo is very personable and down to earth. He lays it down so you can understand what is going on and besides that he is as empathetic as they come which is rareity in Neurosurgeon's ( he has seen me in tears a few times.) From his website: "Dr. Khoo comes to Good Samaritan Hospital from UCLA, where he served as the Co-director of the UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center from 2002 to 2009. Over the years, he pioneered and validated many minimally invasive spinal surgical procedures in over 60 peer reviewed journal articles, 10 patents, 60 book chapters, 2 full books, and 400 scientific presentations." I had to cut and paste it because I just could not have put it better about his chops :-) He will only recommend doing a procedure if it is really and truly necessary. Last year I went to see him for a spinal cord injury from a car accident. I saw him just in the nick of time... and he got me into surgery right away. Saying "I am grateful" does not do justice for what he did for me. I referred an aquaintance to him as well because he was having a lot of of neck problems. A few month's later when I saw him again he was all SMILES! He was very happy with what Dr.Khoo had to say, he didn't need sugery, was advised to do things a little differently with his workout's and to take a break. He followed his advice and was feeling great. Don't get me wrong, don't think he is going to wave his magic surgeons wand and your okay and it's all good again....in my, and I assume, most cases there is alot of work to be done, like following orders and doing your PT or whatever it is he tells you to do. Most of the recovery work is on you... he is the carpenter and such a brilliant and kind one at that! The only bad thing I can say is that I didn't see him sooner instead of later. I know I have alot of work ahead. Anyone with back issues knows how depressing and disruptive it is to your life and those around you. I fully suggest you get your first opinion from Dr. Khoo and if you already had a first opinion go see him for a second. Placing my trust in this doctor was a mistake. Believing his dire warnings as to what lay ahead for me ie. losing my ability to walk, I believed moving forward with surgery was in my best interest. Now, 8 months post surgery, my symptoms have gotten worse. Something went sideways with the cervical spine surgery , resulting in a hematoma, that required an additional surgery the next day. The hospital stay was an unmitigated nightmare! Resulting in the need to call in the rapid response team and a move to the ICU where the hematoma was diagnosed, necessitating the additional surgery. Communication with this doctors and his office is horrible! On the date of my 6 month follow up I found out by chance that the doctor was not going to be in and I would need to reschedule. Of course current imaging was needed for this follow up, and this doctor was to follow up with my insurance, who denied the order request, to explain why the new imaging was needed. I was told someone would follow up with me with a status report prior to my "rescheduled" follow up appointment. No one followed up with me with a status report or anything else for that matter! As I felt it would be a waste of time to "follow up" with no new imaging of any sort, I did not bother with trying to keep the rescheduled appointment. They couldn't even be bothered to take time to reach out to me about the no show. At this juncture, I have no way to prove or disprove this doctors assessment which prompted me to have surgery. My confidence I made the right decision has been completely obliterated! I was a very active guy. Now all of the activities I enjoyed are almost completely un-doable. Hello my name is Sheree McClendon, i am a 50 year old  single mother of 4 grown  children 8 grandchildren.  In 2015 I was referred to a neurosurgeon of the LA Spine Clinic at Good Samaritan Hospital named Dr. Khoo.  At the time of my first visit with Dr. Khoo I explained to him that I had been dealing with this since 1999 and that i saw 2 other neurosurgeons 1 in 2011 and 1 in 2015 and they told I would be paralyzed if I had the surgery so I decided to let nature take its course.  He had me do an MRI and come back well in during a return appointment with Dr. Khoo he assured me that he could do a minimally evasive surgery and that after the surgery I wouldn't be back to 100% but I would be close to that.  So after discussing it with my daughters who were at the appointment with me,  I decided to have the surgery.  He told me that the surgery would be 4 hours my hospital stay would be 4 days and my rehab would be 1 week. None of that was true,  the surgery was 6 hours my hospital stay was 2 weeks and rehab stay was 4 months.  After the surgery Dr. Khoo told me the surgery went good I had very little blood loss every thing went well and that I would be back to 70% once the swelling went down. I guess the swelling hasn't gone down cause I'm still paralyzed from the waist down till this day. When I received a copy of the surgery report I saw that Dr.  Khoo put the surgery was 3 hours and that he discussed  extensively the risk of the surgery and a lot of other things that never was said or talked about.  I looked over the final report from my discharge to the rehab center the dates of admission and discharge are wrong all the results were different from what Dr. Khoo told me.  I informed Dr. Khoo that I was seeking legal advice and requested my complete records Dr. Khoo  stalled until the statue of limitations was up. He only released them to me once I threatened to call every news,  radio and talk show until someone listen to my story.  Then I received an email containing a copy of my medical records and stating a copy had been mailed to me.  But he also falsified my records to make him look good and when I go online to my chart where I have access to view test results and my records there are MRI results and other things that have been deleted or removed and it wasn't done until I informed him I was writing the medical board and seeking legal advice. I don't know what will happen as far as he goes I would like for him to be exposed and for people to be aware of him and doctors who lie to patients just to make a dollar.  Dr. Khoo made over $34,000 doing the surgery he performed on me. I'm writing to you in hopes to spread my story so people can look out for surgeons like him.  If a surgeon tells you he can perform a surgery with positive results that 2 others said they won't do coz of the negative outcome RUN they're lying. I had surgery by this man in 2016. A fusion of my lumbar vertebrae L 3-4-5. I complained of continued pain after the surgery and he told me that I was fused and that I needed to build up my core by doing pilates. Now... almost 4 years later... I went to the Mayo Clinic to figure out why I was still in pain. After X-rays & a scan ... it just happens that it NEVER FUSED! He's a sad excuse for a doctor. Be warned and don't let this man touch you. Dr. Khoo is very charismatic, but ultimately self-centered, untruthful and incompetent. An "outpatient procedure" for a cervical disc replacement became 3 surgeries, 3 months of hospitalization and $17,000 in home-administered antibiotics thanks to this untruthful doctor. Dr. Khoo was very touchy and charismatic in pre-op appointments, but he managed to tear my esophagus during the procedure. According to the hospital medical records, he attributed it to a "falling episode" despite the fact that I was under anesthesia and strapped to a gurney at the time. Dr. Khoo arranged a second surgery to sew up the tear. A nasa-gastric tube was inserted and I was told I would not be allowed to swallow food or drink until the tear healed. Fluid continued to leak into my lungs and I developed pneumonia. A PCC line was installed for the IV infusion of antibiotics. After a week, I was discharged, but the swelling on my neck continued to grow. My primary care doctor sent me to the emergency room where I was diagnosed with an abscess and sent back to Good Samaritan. The abscess burst and a third surgery was performed by a cardio-thoracic specialist. Following this procedure I was in the cardiac ICU for a week. And at this point, Dr. Khoo seemed to disappear. Calls to his office went unanswered while I tried to sort out what was going on. Ultimately, an infectious disease specialist diagnosed me with a hospital-borne infection and put me on a regimen of wide-spectrum antibiotics. He also informed me that the antibiotics were affecting my kidneys and that I would likely require dialysis if I continued taking them. The hospital lab eventually came up with an alternate antibiotic treatment and after 2-1/2 weeks I was discharged a second time an placed on a home regimen of 3 daily infusions of Zerbaxa and Clindamycin for 6 weeks at a copay charge of $17,000. Dr. Khoo magically reappeared on my last night in the hospital. He was sobbing and promised that he'd find a lower-cost source for the antibiotics or pay for them himself. But, typically, nothing of the sort ever happened. His office also cancelled a scheduled follow-up appointment and I determined not to bother seeing him again. In the end I was also treated to an $800,000 hospital bill as well as continued follow-ups with a speech therapist and a neurologist to sort out continued choking episodes and potential nerve damage. read more

I can't say anything about Dr Khoo because I did not get in to see him. I wanted to very badly and waited a month to get in to see him. I unfortunately had to reschedule and wait three additional weeks later so that I would not have to take my three year old with me. But What I can say is that the office practice of booking an appt for you after you have confirmed they take your insurance - only to find out a day before your appt that in fact they DO NOT take your insurance - is total b.s. I even asked why they took so long to tell me this....and all they could say was that it's their practice "to call a day ahead of the appt...and that it's very time consuming dealing with ins companies". No kidding! And now I, the one who is in pain and can't sleep and hasn't slept well in years is the one who has to pick up the pieces of incompetence at the last minute and find yet ANOTHER reputable neurosurgeon and likely wait for another month to find out if I need spine surgery. well , personally as a human , Dr Khoo is nice , charming ,but as a Doctor .....call me crazy but I like to be able to communicate with my doctor , and if you do .... he is not the doctor for you ! I don't think he understands how to work with his patients..... he disappears a lot ! does not return phone calls or emails...... let me elaborate When he needed me for his stem cell study he was available , but as soon as that ended , he would Not communicate with me what so ever,,,,,his office staff was rude , completely unsympathetic ( sorry when you dealing with people in pain you might want to hire some caring staff ) even when I tried to get the on call doctor I was denied( I've never had that ever happen ) ,,,,,,,,I have never been treated so poorly by any medical practice and in a way I feel grateful that I dodged a bullet....... sad because I like the man ,,,,,,,but not the doctor Just Read some of his other patients experiences ( read the other reviews ) you may feel like continuing your search ............ read more

The staff and his P.A. were very helpful and polite. The biggest problem is waiting for Dr. Khoo. I seen him twice and the first time was a 1 hour wait, and that was to get into his personal waiting room. I figured well it was just a busy day. I followed up with him after he scheduled me to see the physical therapist and get am MRI. He is a nice enough guy but the second time i saw him it waited over an hour to get into his waiting room and spoke with this his P.A. who was very nice and knowledgeable. But i waited in there for another hour. I kept asking when is Dr. Khoo going to see me? They kept saying soon., he's with a couple more patients. After being in his office for over 2 hours i said F this. I told his staff i didn't want to be charged for this visit and reschedule so i can be his first patient in the morning. They asked me to wait but i had to go leave. They never rescheduled me and i was charged for the visit. I refused to pay the $20 co pay and was sent to collections for it. If this dr is going to make people wait so long i suggest he let them know ahead of time exactly how long they should expect to wait. Over 2 hours is just ridiculous and who knows how much longer i had to wait if i stayed. He should lower the amount of patients he's going to see in a day if he's going to spend so much time with them. read more

Dr Khoo iS amazing! True professional and never rushes you and takes time to answer all your questions. He looks through your MRIs thoroughly! I went to him in 2014 he did not recommend surgery I moved away and came to LA and now in 2017 with updated MRIs he saw the decline in my condition and when he recommended surgery this time around I did not hesitate to have the surgery! Dr. Khoo has been my doctor for 14 years. I followed him from UCLA, I have changed my insurance 3 times to continue to be his patient. I won't lie sometimes the wait is horrible HOWEVER that is because Dr. Khoo cares about his patients his answers ALL of your questions and does what he can to set you at ease, if he rushed his patients people would complain about that I would much rather have it THIS way. I have major issues and need a 6th surgery on my spine as the disease I have requires such. I can NOT IMAGINE anyone else working on me. He has the most amazing bedside manner, treats his patients with the utmost respect, and explains every detail of your issues until you understand completely what your issues are, and if you need surgery then he explains everything that needs to be done to fix your problem. Extraordinary!!!!! I was crippled in pain for a few years and didn't realize that I had to self medicate daily to relieve the pain and to get through work, for years!!! When I went to Dr. Khoo, he said that I had Spondolislitheasis, which is my vertebrae had moved out of place and my disk was crushed and my nerves were pinched off, so I had to have major surgery with titanium rods to put me back together!! And I was scared to death, but he assured me that he was the doctor who could help to fix my serious issue and excruciating pain, so I went and had this surgery. I have to report that I am 100% better and healed within 3 months!!!!!!!! I thank God for Dr. Khoo and he is the best in the country for neuro spine issues and surgery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And last but certainly not least, Good Samaritan Hospital is the most amazing, cleanest, best staffed hospital as well!!!!!!!!!!!!! They care and they show it!!!! Dr Khoo is a breath of fresh air. He is personable, honest, patient, experienced, smart, and practical. He looks at the big picture, not just diagnosing a problem and rushing to surgery to fix it (which may not always be the best solution). Dr Khoo never seemed rushed during the consultation, despite a full waiting room and having just worked all night on call in the hospital. The staff were all equally pleasant to deal with. Dr Khoo performed a very difficult surgery on my back by taking out 2 vertebrata and replacing it with a device called Fortify Spacer System which eliminated my hump and also added an inch of height since I lost it due to cancer called Damned! Multiple Myeloma. I must admit not too many medical groups do what Dr. Khoo's office did for me, I had one of his staff members Antoinette e-mailing and updating me the weekend prior to my Monday Oct 12 surgery, weekend people, how many people you know that do that but she got me through some issues that I think I was at fault but she took care of it. As far as Dr Khoo well how many surgeons you know that will visit you the day after surgery and change the dressing I mean this man is so down to earth that is scary and what a surgeon. When I was talking about him with Good Samaritan hospital staff is if we were talking about God, who knows maybe maybe we were. I also have to mention one more person and that's Ms Gi his professional assistant, a beautiful lady and a passionate one at that. She is the one basically was looking out for my medical needs but believe me it was not what I expected. The bottom line is they really didn't have to be this nice but I think it's just who they are. I had recommended Dr Khoo to some of my friends that needed spine surgery and now that I had to rely on him myself strongly I mean strongly recommend their office. I am just hoping that the hospital will start using Crepe Bandage instead of the industrial tape that they use they almost peelled half of my skin and hair off and hey me being from Iran I have lots of hair. read more

Dr. Khoo is one of the most qualified, caring, and patient physicians I've ever visited and at age 72 I've seen quite a few doctors over the years. First I saw Chris, who is his nurse-practitioner (and wife!) and she recorded a thorough history and performed an initial exam. She's a delightful person with a surprising command of neurology and orthopedics. Shortly thereafter Dr. Khoo came in and spent maybe 30 minutes examining me and then thoroughly explaining my problem and the possible alternatives to treatment. He is very conservative, suggesting physical therapy and other modalities before considering surgery. His referrals were entirely appropriate and timely. This Yale - trained physician is top-drawer in my book! BTW, my appointment was the first of the day (8:30) so I can't comment on the allegedly long waits - mine was less than five minutes. read more

Needed a surgery for stenosis and I can't say enough how happy I was about the entire process from the initial stages to the prep to the surgery and post op. Great staff who are very helpful and knowledgeable. The only suggestion is to speed up the waiting time during the visit but that has nothing to do with how well the doctor performed the surgery. read more

You shouldn't pick a doctor through Yelp. But if you are doing research, as I had to do for multiple neck issues, I want to tell you that Dr. Khoo is the best doctor for back and especially neck surgery, that you are going to find. I have seen 13 doctor in 5 years, so trust me. I have never experienced such a kind, non egotistical, experienced surgeon in my life. He is a rarity. You will have to wait for a appointment with him. But he is the guy you should go with. He is a genius who cares and listens. Good Samaritan, where he performs his surgeries is outstanding and way better than UCLA, or USC, and especially...CEDARS. Yikes. If you are in trouble with your neck or back, Larry Khoo is your man. He is not going to promise you things that no one can make happen for you. But he is honest and a surgical artist. Before agreeing to have surgery with this surgery please get a second opinion. Dr Khoo will fast talk you and lie I was told I would be up and back to work in 30days, that was a lie it has been over 3yr my condition continue to decline and once you have surgery it takes forever to an appointment. His office staff are liars and when you call them on it they lie again the last appointment I had to see Dr Khoo I waited over 1hr and a half I got so sick waiting to see him I had to leave and was admitted to the hospital 2days later. What he doesn't have is someone who has a Nursing back ground to triage the patient C/O and make the appointment according to the severity of the C/O. After my surgery a spine x-ray was done and the Radiologist pointed out there was a problem with one of the clips he disputed the Radiologist and my condition has gotten worse he also guaranteed my scoliosis would not get any worse that was a lie I have an appointment to see him next week will see what happens NOTE I am registered nurse, i practiced as a Physician Assistants. read more
