The Washington Street Inn - Front Porch Bird houses and a gliding couch like I had when I was growing up

Tony and his wife were…read morewonderful and helpful. it's been years since I've been to Grand Haven and I needed a comfy place to stay, and good advice on local eats. The historic feel of the house was fabulous, from the table that reminded me of growing up, the games in the front room, the cozy room at the front to watch people walk by, and the proximity to downtown and all the places I wanted to go. I loved their attention to detail and even the bunny jelly holder for toast, in the morning . Breakfasts were very cool, and perfect portions. Thank you SO much, Tony. I will absolutely stay with you again.

It was just an awesome place to stay. Tony and Michelle were born to do this. From the moment we walked in the door, it was clear that this was going to be a great weekend. They both know how to walk that thin line between being ultra-professional and being so welcoming as to feel like long lost friends. Tony and I talked several times the day of arrival as we were a bit delayed in our travel and each of my several phone calls to him were promptly answered with a cheerful, "no problem... we'll be waiting for you." And sure enough, the minute I walked through the door, he was there with a handshake, and some great advice for a late-night dinner. Old-school charm with new-school technology from the door codes to the free (unbelievably fast) Wi-Fi, I literally don't know what else I could've asked for to make this any more comfortable than it already was. They're in a beautiful location with gorgeous parks within a stone's throw and walking distance to downtown (right down the road on Washington Blvd) and the water. It couldn't have been more convenient. The accommodations were amazing. Five bedrooms to pick from, each with their own charm. We picked ours because of the large private bath with an old fashioned claw-foot tub. The bathroom had great water pressure, complimentary high quality shampoos and body washes, and there was even a built-in overhead heater to keep you from getting cold after a shower. The place could not have been cleaner if I cleaned it myself. Either they buy new towels and linens for every guest that stays there or they have some trick up their sleeves they should teach to the rest of the hospitality industry. The sinks and tub didn't have a single water stain. The bedroom and bathroom were both immaculate. I guess that's just the best way to describe it without continuing to go over every detail -- immaculate. Beautiful woodwork through the upstairs hallways and there wasn't a sign of wear anywhere. They clearly care about not only their guests but about this beautiful home away from home. Three common rooms and a beautiful front porch give you a choice as to where you want to socialize, meet other guests, have a coffee, do some work, just relax, or play any number of their countless awesome games (such as the biggest wooden scrabble board you've ever seen or a 40-year-old hand-carved chess board with 10-inch hand-carved pieces for instance) while you're waiting for others in your party to get ready to go out. Free snacks galore (about a dozen different ones to pick from), a refrigerator to use for restaurant leftovers you might bring back, beautiful plateware and silverware, and interesting little furnishings from long past, such as an antique wooden stereoscope viewer and a radio which is guaranteed to be the oldest one you've ever seen, are all a part of the experience. Which brings me to my favorite part -- the breakfast, which is outstanding. The first morning, we were presented with fresh berries served as an appetizer. And I mean a HEALTHY amount of FRESH, BEAUTIFUL berries. The next course was some hand-made warm, cinnamon, pear crumble thing. And the final course was an egg, sausage, and cheese pastry with fennel. Several of them. Per person. The next morning started again with what must have been hand-chosen berries, but this time we received a different delicious crumbly warmed first course followed by this amazing herbed-egg dish which had some sort of baked Parmesan topping. I remember taking the first bite, and then I remember my extra-large oval ramekin (served hot straight from the oven) being clean enough to put back in the cupboard. Everything else between those two points is fuzzy. And all the coffee and juice you can drink. We did not leave that table hungry either morning. And my mouth has been is watering recalling it for this entire paragraph. There's an old saying that when you find something good you have two choices - keep it for yourself or share it with the world, and I don't get to Grand Haven enough to in good conscience keep it for myself. Enjoy!

The Looking Glass Bed and Breakfast was the perfect venue for our four days in Grand Haven MI. The owner, Brian, runs a first class operation in a charming old house, delightfully and comfortably furnished and well suited to our tastes. We had the run of the house and access to all the common areas, including the beautiful front deck with its unobstructed views of Lake Michigan. One thing that needs to be mentioned: the house sits at the top of a steep hill. The only access is to walk up 71 stairs or to take the electrically operated railway car (funicular). Brian has the only one on this side of the hill. Not a bad walk, if you are in shape. Ever the congenial host, Brian bent over backwards to accommodate our group. He was attentive to our needs and eager to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. We were smacking our lips over his delicious breakfasts, served hot and promptly prepared each morning. We were given our own refrigerator space for group meals and he allowed us to hold daily Happy Hour. Enjoying snacks and a glass of wine, we enjoyed the incredible vistas through the wide picture windows, the perfect backdrop for photos. We quickly became captive to the delights of this beach front property. He even gave the okay for a small musical group to come to entertain us on our final night cookout on the deck. When evening chill settled in, we were comfortably ensconced into the commodious living room. At our invitation, he brought his wife and toddler to join us for the meal and the music. Thus we all danced, sang and partied with abandon in the face of a glorious sunset to end a most convivial and memorable vacation.

The staircase from the parking area to the inn is a little daunting, but there's a small funicular that will take you up most of the incline if you'd rather spare your calves. (Accessibility note: All of the guest rooms are on the second floor, so there are stairs regardless.) It would have been nice to have more towels and washcloths stocked in the bathroom, and leaving some lights on in the common areas would be welcome. Brian recommended some excellent dinner spots, and he makes a mean breakfast casserole. We really enjoyed our visit to Grand Haven and are already planning a return trip.

We were fortunate enough to come across this elegant bed and breakfast while searching online for a last minute weekend getaway. Our dog shares the same name as this B&B so we took that as a sign that this was our place. We stayed in the Lilley Suite. It was especially beautiful. The bathtub is perfect. I've never left a review about a bathtub. This one is just exceptional in terms of how comfortable it is to soak in. We loved our breakfast and the coffee. Patrick, and everyone we met, were welcoming and fun to chat with. The dining room is so special! We loved the plants and the ambience. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. My husband and I just stayed here for the weekend and Nicole made each part of our stay special. The room was beautiful and had plenty of privacy, but it was also nice to spend time with the other guests in the communal spaces. Since there are two bathrooms for the two rooms to share (the third room for guests has its own en suite), there's no issue with sharing bathrooms or having to wait for others to finish. And the main bathroom for guests is huge with a beautiful luxurious tub which I thoroughly enjoyed. Every morning, Nicole prepares a beautiful breakfast - super delicious and thoughtful homemade meals. This alone really drives the value of staying here. Starting the day off with a wonderful breakfast and plenty of delicious coffee is fantastic. Spring Lake itself is also very cute, with lots of good shops and restaurants nearby and in the surrounding towns. Bella Mia is a great value, and a really special experience. I'd highly recommend it, and I hope to be back soon!

I'll admit it: I didn't check Yelp prior to booking this hotel for my recent stay in Grand Haven…read more Had I done so, I would have looked elsewhere for my accommodations. From what I read here, this place is merely a step above sleeping in a box on the street. Trusting very angry customers isn't always the best policy. The Baymont in Grand Haven is not a five-star hotel. It's a three-star hotel. I found the staff to be very friendly, helpful, and frankly respectable. Service is slow due to staffing issues, and given these limitations, I believe the employees who are showing up to work each day are doing the very best they can. It's a shame when a business has to post signs telling customers they'll be eighty-sixed for abusing staff members. Our room, a standard with a king-sized bed, was acceptable. It was clean when we arrived, and it had all the amenities one would expect. I'd like to know what brand of mattress they use: the bed was extremely comfortable. I noted a lack of ventilation in the bathroom, which has led to mildew. I also feel the in-room entertainment services could be upgraded. It would be nice to see a smart TV with streaming services. The pool seemed nice, but I didn't use it. The fitness center is out-of-commission. Given their lack of staff, I still found the breakfast acceptable. Relax. This hotel isn't that bad. Grand Haven is a beautiful place where you needn't spend unnecessary time in a hotel room.

We came from three hours away, got into town, and called at 1:30ish. We were told the rooms wouldn't be ready until 4:00 PM, so we went downtown and had lunch. We went to the "hotel?" at 4:30 or so, and the front desk stated the rooms were still not ready due to staffing issues. As my wife was explaining the situation, the staff member started talking over her. I stepped in and reiterated that, to this point, we had waited over three hours for our rooms. We finally got into the rooms at 5:15 (they, of course, could not provide us with connecting rooms). The room and bathroom were filthy; the carpet was not vacuumed, and there was mold on the shower curtain and tub. The bathroom floor was so dirty that when we placed a bath mat down after the first shower, the bottom came back black as well. We could only tolerate the provided breakfast one of the two mornings (powdered eggs, undercooked hash browns). This motel/hotel could do so much better. From looking at other reviews, it is quite clear that the owners/management are not concerned with providing any kind of minimal service or pleasing accommodations. I, for one, refuse to patronize places such as this one.
