For my purposes, as a curry café, Khan's ranks as one of the best food places I've ever eaten in.
Khan's is a basic-looking takeaway with seating for about a dozen customers. What drew me in was their advertisment '4 roti or naan for £1'. Reading the menu, it became clear that Khan's has a decent curry selection, including six or so vegetarian curries. The owner is really friendly, and on confirming that their saag dhal features fresh spinach (not that common even in smart Indian/Pakistani restaurants) with roti made fresh to order, I knew I had found a good place which would feature highly on my Curry Cafés of Manchester list.
Khan's prices are unbeatable - saag dhal with 2 roti or rice comes to just £3.00! Other vegetable curries include bhindi or mixed veg. They have some curries ready to serve from a small bain marie, but the veg for my saag dhal was cooked fresh to order with chana dhal. I asked for just a bit of chili but for me it was still fairly hot, so I would suggest a cautious approach in ordering if you don't like too much heat. They are quite happy to leave out the chili if you don't want it - one of the pluses of food being cooked to order and therefore made to your individual taste. The saag dhal portion was enough for me, with the freshness of the veg and the spicy flavours hitting the spot. The roti are large-sized, well-cooked but soft. Khan's is set up quite professionally for flatbreads with both dough rolling and automatic roti machines.
Also, if you looking for a regular takeaway in this area for pizza, curry or whatever, I can't speak for the rest of the menu but Khan's is cheap as chips (12" Margherita £3.50) and therefore worth checking out.
I like Khan's enough that I would make the trip from central Manchester just to eat here, especially given how cheap, fast and frequent the train service is from Piccadilly - at 8 minutes and under £2 for a return ticket it is easy reached. The freshness, cheapness and tasty authenticity of the food, plus the friendliness of the owner are the draws for me. Plus, Levenshulme is like a big Aladdin's cave with all the architectural salvage shops and so on, offering plenty of interesting doorways to duck inside if time allows. read more
