They have computerized everything, so that your records are easily accessible and update-able. Cathy, the receptionist is so warm and nice, she puts you at ease as soon as you walk in (in fact, she always greets me by name). My two young children were patients of Dr. McKenzie from 2025-2026; though we have had problems with her from the beginning, we put up with her because her office was conveniently located downtown. We had made our first appointment with her for a routine cleaning, for which she charged us $398. When my children showed minor discomfort with the dental chair, instead of working with my children or giving me a chance to put them at ease, she made me take more time off of work to come back later. During the follow-up appointment, the cleaning was less thorough than the twice-daily brushing that the children have at home. She did not use a polisher or any other dental tools, and the only task that she did that I could not do myself was apply flouride paste to the children's teeth. We came back after my daughter fell and injured her mouth. I had mistakenly thought that my daughter's tooth had fallen out and wanted to get the injury professionally examined. Dr. McKenzie was so inept that, even after examining my daughter, she did not realize that the tooth was actually pushed into my daughter's gum. (I found out weeks later after the tooth began reemerging.) The last straw for us happened when we were 15 minutes late for one of the children's appointments due to a subway delay. (The children had back to back appointments scheduled at 10am and 1030am.) We had called in advance of the appointment to let Dr. McKenzie know that we would be running late and provided an accurate ETA, and Dr. McKenzie's assistant told us that we could still come in. It was not until after we arrived that we were told that both of the appointments would be cancelled, even though we had called ahead and were 15 minutes early for the second appointment, and that we would be charged a $200 cancellation fee.

The cleaning was the most painful I have ever experienced, and I generally like dentists. He is nice enough, but not very interested in explaining the details of what he is doing. The staff was fine. My second appt, what should have been a filling turned into a surprise root canal- he got in there and said it was worse than he thought. I should have stopped him right there and gotten a second opinion. But I was already Novocained up and trusted him. I am not sure whether I needed a root canal or not, but the tooth had never cause me problems or pain before. So, 6 more appts later.... My tooth has been in pain for 4 months, this has been the longest and most painful dental experience of my life. He thought the pain was from an infection and gave me 2 Rx for antibiotics. Finally he figures out he only got 3 of the 4 roots that he needed to, and that is why I have been in pain for so long. Now I am stuck with a sore tooth and insurance won't cover another procedure on the same tooth for 2 years. Never again will I go back to him.

For an entire week after the fill-in my mouth was so sore, I could barely open it, my tongue had been cut in 3 different areas, and guess what.... That tooth? Still hurt like hell. I was pretty scarred from that visit and didn't want to return but I figured maybe they'll refund me since his uncertainty left me $110 short. I just went back in TODAY not fully expecting a refund but for the price to be adjusted if I decided to get the root canal. Dear God I have never been talked to the way he did by a dentist. He gave me so much attitude and said that his time went into doing the fill so there will be no price adjustment. It was like he was trying to chastise me for asking a simple question. I was pretty shaken after that, I just couldn't believe his response. He then suggests we do the root canal right now. So I say well I wanna know what that will cost me before we begin. He has his nurse go to the front desk to run the numbers but insists on starting the numbing process. There is a dry erase board where each kids name is written to welcome them, a very nice touch. Each kid gets a goody bag at the end and a token which can be used on the toy vending machines in the lobby. This is a HUGE hit with the kids! They usually get little jewelry trinkets or toys that they get excited about. One time the staff gave them balloons which was sweet. The dentist herself is very kind and gentle and thorough with the kids. She'll take time to answer questions and explain things. The same go for all the hygienists here. Just this month, she has decided to drop Metlife. This appears to be a pattern -- a pattern of dropping some of the more common insurance carriers. I do not know for how long it has been going on, but it causes chaos and unpredictability around a part of a young child's life that is already scary and confusing. This is arrogant and, and it sends a perhaps unintentional signal that her team possibly care only about the wealthiest members of the Arlington community who can afford to bear the burden of this unpredictability. It forces busy families to scramble to find a new dentist for their child -- and I fear it can cause harm to children who develop a bond of trust with one building and staff to be migrated to another. So, pray tell, how do Metlife families at your practice explain this to their 3 and 4 year olds? If you don't belong to an extremely high-earning two family household, Dr. Flanagan's practice is not for you.
