The cleaning was the most painful I have ever experienced, and I generally like dentists. He is nice enough, but not very interested in explaining the details of what he is doing. The staff was fine. My second appt, what should have been a filling turned into a surprise root canal- he got in there and said it was worse than he thought. I should have stopped him right there and gotten a second opinion. But I was already Novocained up and trusted him. I am not sure whether I needed a root canal or not, but the tooth had never cause me problems or pain before. So, 6 more appts later.... My tooth has been in pain for 4 months, this has been the longest and most painful dental experience of my life. He thought the pain was from an infection and gave me 2 Rx for antibiotics. Finally he figures out he only got 3 of the 4 roots that he needed to, and that is why I have been in pain for so long. Now I am stuck with a sore tooth and insurance won't cover another procedure on the same tooth for 2 years. Never again will I go back to him.

He took great care while cleaning my teeth not to jab the instrument into my gums. And he succeeded. I didn't get stabbed once! Even more importantly, he was VERY thorough. With my previous dentist, I was in the chair no more than 15 minutes. With Dr. Jacques, it was more like 45. I really appreciate the attention to detail that this translated into. I also was very pleased with the administrative side. I just called yesterday, assuming I wouldn't be able to get an appointment for at least a week. But there'd been a cancellation, so I was offered an appointment this morning. The woman I talked to then sent me several forms to complete. I did that, sent them back & received an acknowledgement just a few minutes later. Very efficient! This operation definitely gets

From my brief appointment with her yesterday, I could tell that she's the kind of medical practitioner that makes you want to become a long time patient. A solid 5 star dental professional. Unfortunately, my experience with the front desk personnel left much to be desired. LaShandra gave me the feeling that she didn't want to be bothered with me. The tone in which she spoke to me on the phone before I ever made it into the office was curt, but then when I finally came in the office, I felt that her tone was even more demeaning. The whole time she spoke with me, she'd never make any eye contact. I'm hard of hearing and wear hearing aids and trying to hear when people have a mask on is very difficult and she seemed to not want to repeat anything and that she simply didn't have time. (Mind you, there's no one else in the waiting area, nor is the phone ringing during this time which I would've understood if she couldn't answer my questions at the moment due to other office obligations). Finally I asked her to give me a second to turn on my mic (I have a mic that connects directly to my hearing aids via Bluetooth to help me hear better. The last question (about insurance) I started to try and ask her before going into the room with the doctor, I was stopped abruptly by her saying that it was time to see the doctor so I guess that was her way of not answering the question. Growing up, my family didn't have a healthy dental routine of seeing dentists. As an adult, I'm dealing with the consequences of that and trying to create healthier dental habits moving forward. I was beyond excited to come to Capitol Family Dental since it's in my neighborhood and had so many phenomenal reviews. I had even convinced my husband to give them a shot potentially leaving his normal dentist and hygienist that he's been going to for 10+ years since Capitol Family Dentistry is in the neighborhood. But unfortunately, my experience speaking with LaShandra multiple times over the phone before I came in for my first appointment coupled with my in-person experience turned me off a bit. Moreover, when I'd ask questions, she'd make assumptions that she knew the reason behind my question and answered based on what she thought I needed to know instead of just answering my question which made the communication even more tense (not to mention, leaving me without the information I was trying to get). I mean, I'm in the dentist's office ON MY BIRTHDAY with a broken tooth. Definitely not how I want to start off the morning of my birthday but to be made to feel like you're not worth the time is just not a good experience. Not sure how to proceed but I may still be looking for a new dentist. I hate to give such a highly regarded dental practice 2 stars, but when the experience with front desk is such that it leaves you feeling like you don't want to come back and you're weighing to yourself whether or not to continue to subject yourself to this type of treatment, I think it warrants it. I couldn't do only 1 star because Dr. P was a gem. But what good are great doctors when the staff makes you feel like trash before you even get to meet them?

Located right on capital hill, not far from Potomac Avenue in a row home, the office is a hair small, front staff as soon as you walk in, the waiting room in farther ahead. When Dr. Baker is ready for you, you go upstairs to the patient room (I believe there is another patient room and doctor's office up there.) Dr. Baker requests that the parents wait outside of the room (you can sit outside of the room and see in.) At first I didn't like that, but I trusted her with my baby and really, there's not a lot of room for the dentist, the patient, the assistant and a doting mother. She has a toy chest full of small toys that the kids can pick from after a check up visit. Even with good service and care, of course my child is still intrigued when he sees other pediatric dentist offices with a playground and lots of fun, bright colors. Though it looks…read morelike some other reviewers have had better experiences with her, I note that she gives patients giftcards in exchange for positive reviews. My two young children were patients of Dr. McKenzie from 2025-2026; though we have had problems with her from the beginning, we put up with her because her office was conveniently located downtown. We had made our first appointment with her for a routine cleaning, for which she charged us $398. When my children showed minor discomfort with the dental chair, instead of working with my children or giving me a chance to put them at ease, she made me take more time off of work to come back later. During the follow-up appointment, the cleaning was less thorough than the twice-daily brushing that the children have at home. She did not use a polisher or any other dental tools, and the only task that she did that I could not do myself was apply flouride paste to the children's teeth. We came back after my daughter fell and injured her mouth. I had mistakenly thought that my daughter's tooth had fallen out and wanted to get the injury professionally examined. Dr. McKenzie was so inept that, even after examining my daughter, she did not realize that the tooth was actually pushed into my daughter's gum. (I found out weeks later after the tooth began reemerging.) The last straw for us happened when we were 15 minutes late for one of the children's appointments due to a subway delay. (The children had back to back appointments scheduled at 10am and 1030am.) We had called in advance of the appointment to let Dr. McKenzie know that we would be running late and provided an accurate ETA, and Dr. McKenzie's assistant told us that we could still come in. It was not until after we arrived that we were told that both of the appointments would be cancelled, even though we had called ahead and were 15 minutes early for the second appointment, and that we would be charged a $200 cancellation fee.
