Fresh and hot. Lovely drive-thru worker. The food was super filling and well within the budget. It's a small place but well worth going.

It looks like they slapped/exploded ingredients on my meals, it's messy like a sloppy joe. I don't even wanna know what the back looks like. There were toe nails, dead flys, so much dirt. I definitely don't think they were wiping off tables or anything. Photos are just from the last visit I had. I have many more photos. Once me and my boyfriend ordered two mc doubles and were given two hamburgers. He worked in 15 so we couldn't get it fixed and had to leave with shitty burgers. I ABSOLUTELY DONT RECOMMEND. McDonald's - Dirt swept up in the corner-- we couldn't even put our bags down without worrying about how sanitary it was.

McDonald's - The entire inside of the wrapper was coated with Big Mac sauce. My friend ordered the same thing and hers looked drastically different.

This particular one wound up being convenient on a day trip. The menu has been given a face-lift since the last time I visited one (several years ago on Cape Cod). There is a large variety of burgers, and many of them are listed as sirloin burgers. Now in the U.S., there is a rule that ground sirloin must all come from the same cow. If that is the case in Canada as well, then you're getting a better quality burger than regular hamburger. But because I've had burgers several times the last few days, I opted for a grilled chicken combo instead (roughly $10.45 after taxes). I was pleased to have an option for a side salad instead of fries. While I could have switched my drink to bottled water for about 7 cents more - which I normally would have done - I decided to stick with that good old A&W Root Beer because it's been a while since I've had it. It's served in a frosty mug here. I can't remember if we still get our A&W served in a frosty mug in the states. The other thing I liked is that the grilled chicken sandwich came on what appeared to be a honey wheat & oat bun as opposed to a regular white bread bun. By the quality of the food alone, this would have been 4 stars. But this particular restaurant was a little behind cleaning tables after customers, and the men's room needed some maintenance. But generally speaking, if I'm traveling through the Maritime Provinces, and I feel the need for a fast food burger, I'll pick A&W over McDonald's, Wendy's, or Burger King now that I've visited one.

It's not easy being a pizza place in Pictou County, and all the more so when the granddaddy of the…read morecounty's famous style of pizza is a literal stone's throw away. At first glance, Andre's dine-in menu is broader than that of your standard takeout joint, with over a dozen pasta options and several different wraps and salads, on top of the usual assortment of burgers, fryer fare and of course, pizza, that you'd expect. My wife and I first came by for an easy mid-week lunch while in the midst of labourious home renos. We didn't want to cook and needed out of the house. Knowing that I'd save the pizza experience for another time, I went for the donair sub. It had a decent amount of meat, although I couldn't get a read on the exact flavour of it, due to a hefty slathering of donair sauce. That said, Andre's deserves a tip of the cap for making both meat and sauce in-house, as opposed to much of their competition in the area which is often mediocre Bonte/Mr. Donair product. There was lots of melty mozza, and the bun was crisp from its time in the oven, so overall it was a very good iteration of this hot mess of a sandwich! My wife snagged an Andre's Salad, which comes with romaine, red onion, red peppers, zucchini, sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms, feta and parm. It's a subtle upgrade from your run-of-the mill garden salad with a better variety of flavours, and I eagerly partook to balance out the less healthy ingredients of my sub. Our return visit saw us getting takeout, and this time it had to be pizza! We took a pass on their respectable Friday night deal of two large pizzas for ~$36 due to an already full fridge and that being a lot of pizza for two people, and went with a single XL combination, plus the good ol' Andre's Salad for more significant veg content. The wait was quite good for a Friday night at around 25 minutes, although I was only placing the order at 7pm, so a little past dinner time for many families. Upon opening the pizza box, it was noticeably different, as although Pictou County-style pizza is known for having some browning of the cheese that covers all the toppings, Andre's was completely browned. There was even some crisp bits of cheese that had shattered a bit! While daintier taste buds may not be a fan, I'm all for this additional flavour and texture! Another distinguishing feature of Andre's pie is the crust - it's much thinner than that of other Pictou County-style places. That's not to say it's a thin crust, it just isn't a half-inch of dense dough. I assume most places do that to support the generous amount of toppings and cheese that are one of the defining features of the area's pizza, but Andre's thinner crust works just as well. Don't get me wrong, it's not a demonstrably great crust - the crust is dense and bready, with no airiness, and little-to-no leopard-spotting on the bottom crust and cornicione. Unfortunately, like all other Pictou County pizza places, they've got the toppings and sauce down pat, but these are not well-crafted crusts, just sauce and cheese delivery vessels. Speaking of the sauce, being a Pictou County-style place, the brown sauce was bold and peppery with a slightly stronger flavour than others I've had here. Crust criticisms aside, I'm a definite Andre's pizza fan! Being in the pizza game in Pictou County may not be easy, but there's a reason why Andre's Pizza has been at it for decades.

But when you sit, you will be staring at your table for quite a while. What you will be looking at is all kinds of ticket stubs for concerts from a who's who of rock bands and artists of the 60s through today. Think Black Sabbath, David Bowie, U2, etc. Then, on the walls, a myriad of signed albums, from the same type of bands. Clearly, the owner of this place is a rock fan, and also spent a pile of money on this memorabilia! All this stuff gives this place a really cool vibe. The food is elevated pub-type fare. My colleague's club sandwich was on a kaiser type roll and looked excellent. My beef dip sandwich had a very flavourful au jus accompanying it and the side caesar salad was excellent. My only complaint is that it does take a bit of time to get your food here, which happened both times I had lunch. Nevertheless, the food is good, the vibe is cool, so I'd happily return.

It's always a good thing when a new generation of restauranteurs injects life into a small town…read morewith their food and flavours, and this was the case last summer when Shoebox Cantina opened up on Provost Street. While the name has a Tex-Mex vibe, the menu reflects the broad base of appeal that is often necessary to succeed in smaller communities. As such, alongside their taco menu, you'll also find the likes of steak, bacon mac and cheese, and wings. My fingers were crossed that this wouldn't be a "Jack of all trades, master of none" scenario. Showing up for a lunch with my sister, we leaned into the Tex-Mex part of the menu and ordered the carnitas fries supreme ($13) and the taco sampler ($24). They've got a sizeable rotating tap list of local beers, so I went with a rye IPA from Tatamagouche Brewing. The pork carnitas fries supreme may not have evoked the flavours of Taco Bell's famous hot mess, but they stood tall on their own. A plate of moderately thick fries somehow supported a hefty layer of saucy pork, green onions and a lime crema. Rich and savoury, I found myself wishing for some tableside hot sauce, but was too busy demolishing these to ask. My sister and I, who have both languished for years under the yoke of higher priced food in bigger cities, were very impressed by the value for dollar on this as well. The taco sampler, which is comprised of Shoebox's chicken, carnitas, fish and sweet potato tacos, was both a literal and figurative mixed plate. I appreciated that all the tacos leaned in the minimalist direction of Mexican street tacos; I'm not interested in shredded lettuce and cheddar on my tacos. My two favourites were the fish and sweet potato. The beer battered fish was airy and crisp, and the fish itself was firm and flakey; pickled red cabbage added a lightly tart counterpoint to the deep fried haddock. The sweet potato taco was comprised of ultra-crisp, hash brown-esque pieces of sweet potato, as well as some avocado to add flavour and textural contrast. Sides of a few different salsas - pico, verde and roja - let you mix and match complementing flavours. The other proteins, while far from bad, didn't live up to their potential. The carnitas was oddly heavily sauced, and lacked the crisp bits that show up in this traditional hodge podge of chopped pork. As for the chicken mole, more mole sauce and its rich, lightly chocolatey depth would have been welcome. While I'm not a dessert person, I was blown away by how good the Spanish toast ($9) was. A brioche bun got the French toast treatment and was then topped with brulée sugar, dulce de leche, whipped cream and a blueberry compote. The crisp sugar was a pleasant contrast to an otherwise soft, albeit delicious dish, while the dulce de leche will have you forgetting about maple syrup completely. On a second visit, I hit the more pub-like section of their menu and got the buttermilk fried chicken burger and upgraded the fries to the bacon Caesar salad ($16 + $2). While the sandwich was solid, there's some room for improvement. The chicken itself was a winner - really crisp batter enveloped a moist and tender piece of chicken. The toasted brioche bun held things together well, and honey and a pickle added contrasting flavours to the sandwich. In the "cons" column, some hot sauce would have been welcome to amp up the flavour and there was an awkward amount of lettuce of the sandwich. In tandem with the shape of the chicken versus that of the bun, some bites were just bun and lettuce, which is...not great. The side salad wasn't the prettiest, but it hit the spot. Iceberg lettuce took the place of romaine, and I'm not sure if the croutons were forgotten or the ultra crispy bits of bacon were doing double duty, but it worked. Shoebox Cantina is bringing a lot to New Glasgow and beyond their generally well-executed menu, they host live music events and even have a recording studio upstairs. New businesses like this are just what small towns need, and the same can be said for Shoebox and your taste buds.
