This particular one wound up being convenient on a day trip. The menu has been given a face-lift since the last time I visited one (several years ago on Cape Cod). There is a large variety of burgers, and many of them are listed as sirloin burgers. Now in the U.S., there is a rule that ground sirloin must all come from the same cow. If that is the case in Canada as well, then you're getting a better quality burger than regular hamburger. But because I've had burgers several times the last few days, I opted for a grilled chicken combo instead (roughly $10.45 after taxes). I was pleased to have an option for a side salad instead of fries. While I could have switched my drink to bottled water for about 7 cents more - which I normally would have done - I decided to stick with that good old A&W Root Beer because it's been a while since I've had it. It's served in a frosty mug here. I can't remember if we still get our A&W served in a frosty mug in the states. The other thing I liked is that the grilled chicken sandwich came on what appeared to be a honey wheat & oat bun as opposed to a regular white bread bun. By the quality of the food alone, this would have been 4 stars. But this particular restaurant was a little behind cleaning tables after customers, and the men's room needed some maintenance. But generally speaking, if I'm traveling through the Maritime Provinces, and I feel the need for a fast food burger, I'll pick A&W over McDonald's, Wendy's, or Burger King now that I've visited one.

McJolly Filipino Fast Food - Combo Meal #3 - fried chicken with rice, corn and gravy

Filipino food is probably my favourite international cuisine, with its delicious mix of Asian and…read moreSpanish flavours, and while their fast food is much more American-ized than their more traditional stuff, it's its own little niche that deserves some love too! McJolly was started by Filipino immigrants who became restauranteurs in Halifax and takes its name from two of the most popular fast food chains in the Philippines. No guesses are needed for the prefix, but the second part may be less familiar for Maritimers - Jollibee. They're only just starting to expand in Canada, with about 30 locations across the country, and are known for their assorted menu of fried chicken, burgers, and Filipino-style spaghetti. The menu at McJolly is much the same, and I had the fried chicken section in my sights. I went for Comb Meal #3 - fried chicken, rice and your choice of coleslaw or corn (I chose the latter). I thought I was getting a lighter meal than some of the combos that have both rice and spaghetti, but when my tray was in front of me, the *four* pieces of chicken (two drumsticks and two thighs, go Team Dark Meat!) said otherwise! Hilariously, I was in a bit of a rush to get to a job interview, so I had to inhale this meal and couldn't quite give it the attention it deserved, but there were really only four different items - the chicken, steamed rice, corn and gravy. I won't play coy and leave it until the end of the review - the chicken was awesome! The coating was super crisp, and the meat within was moist and tender. I do wish Filipino fried chicken had more seasoning to it, but hey, well executed fried chicken is still a wonderful thing! The gravy had a pleasant peppery kick to it, and I slathered it over both the chicken and the rice. The small cup of corn was a bit of an afterthought, and I probably should have gone with the coleslaw on the off chance that it would be a vinegar-based dressing to have something to cut through the rich chicken, but it's likely mayo-based anyway. I love that Filipino food has really been blowing up in Halifax the past few years, and I'll definitely be doing a deep dive into it all, including a return visit to McJolly for the spaghetti next time!

At first glance, Andre's dine-in menu is broader than that of your standard takeout joint, with over a dozen pasta options and several different wraps and salads, on top of the usual assortment of burgers, fryer fare and of course, pizza, that you'd expect. My wife and I first came by for an easy mid-week lunch while in the midst of labourious home renos. We didn't want to cook and needed out of the house. Knowing that I'd save the pizza experience for another time, I went for the donair sub. It had a decent amount of meat, although I couldn't get a read on the exact flavour of it, due to a hefty slathering of donair sauce. That said, Andre's deserves a tip of the cap for making both meat and sauce in-house, as opposed to much of their competition in the area which is often mediocre Bonte/Mr. Donair product. There was lots of melty mozza, and the bun was crisp from its time in the oven, so overall it was a very good iteration of this hot mess of a sandwich! My wife snagged an Andre's Salad, which comes with romaine, red onion, red peppers, zucchini, sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms, feta and parm. It's a subtle upgrade from your run-of-the mill garden salad with a better variety of flavours, and I eagerly partook to balance out the less healthy ingredients of my sub. Our return visit saw us getting takeout, and this time it had to be pizza! We took a pass on their respectable Friday night deal of two large pizzas for ~$36 due to an already full fridge and that being a lot of pizza for two people, and went with a single XL combination, plus the good ol' Andre's Salad for more significant veg content. The wait was quite good for a Friday night at around 25 minutes, although I was only placing the order at 7pm, so a little past dinner time for many families. Upon opening the pizza box, it was noticeably different, as although Pictou County-style pizza is known for having some browning of the cheese that covers all the toppings, Andre's was completely browned. There was even some crisp bits of cheese that had shattered a bit! While daintier taste buds may not be a fan, I'm all for this additional flavour and texture! Another distinguishing feature of Andre's pie is the crust - it's much thinner than that of other Pictou County-style places. That's not to say it's a thin crust, it just isn't a half-inch of dense dough. I assume most places do that to support the generous amount of toppings and cheese that are one of the defining features of the area's pizza, but Andre's thinner crust works just as well. Don't get me wrong, it's not a demonstrably great crust - the crust is dense and bready, with no airiness, and little-to-no leopard-spotting on the bottom crust and cornicione. Unfortunately, like all other Pictou County pizza places, they've got the toppings and sauce down pat, but these are not well-crafted crusts, just sauce and cheese delivery vessels. Speaking of the sauce, being a Pictou County-style place, the brown sauce was bold and peppery with a slightly stronger flavour than others I've had here. Crust criticisms aside, I'm a definite Andre's pizza fan! Being in the pizza game in Pictou County may not be easy, but there's a reason why Andre's Pizza has been at it for decades.

But when you sit, you will be staring at your table for quite a while. What you will be looking at is all kinds of ticket stubs for concerts from a who's who of rock bands and artists of the 60s through today. Think Black Sabbath, David Bowie, U2, etc. Then, on the walls, a myriad of signed albums, from the same type of bands. Clearly, the owner of this place is a rock fan, and also spent a pile of money on this memorabilia! All this stuff gives this place a really cool vibe. The food is elevated pub-type fare. My colleague's club sandwich was on a kaiser type roll and looked excellent. My beef dip sandwich had a very flavourful au jus accompanying it and the side caesar salad was excellent. My only complaint is that it does take a bit of time to get your food here, which happened both times I had lunch. Nevertheless, the food is good, the vibe is cool, so I'd happily return.

Certainly not the quaint - dare I saw cool? - little cafe that is now. With branded merchandise, an espresso machine, and plants literally livening up the place, it seems that old dogs *can* learn new tricks! Or at least get new owners. Looking for a lunch that isn't fast food or a slice of pizza isn't an easy thing on a Monday in Pictou County, but I was glad when The Coffee Bean came to mind. Driving down just before noon to beat the lunch rush, I arrived to the remnants of the late morning coffee crew that were already situated, and no line in front of me. Perfect timing! I opted for the intriguing Mexican grilled cheese and an iced Americano to beat the heat. After a few minutes wait, I had my food and coffee in hand and hit the road home. My grilled cheese had a nice golden brown finish, and coming wrapped in paper kept it from steaming and getting too too soggy on the drive home. It was filled with a melty mix of cheeses, as well as a generous portion of diced onion, bell pepper and tomato, along with just the slightest hint of heat. The fresh veg added a pleasant brightness and crispness. The ice in the Americano barely lasted in the summer heat by the time I got home, but I appreciated that it wasn't 80% ice and 20% coffee like some. It's great to see new life breathed into The Coffee Bean, and I hope it continues to serve New Glaswegians (yes, that's our demonym), for yet another generation.
