Fancy Al Quds tonight he said as we ransacked the fridge at our student house. The rest as they say is history. Since then I have been coming to this humble abode for a kobeda, for what is it now 11 years? How time flies. Every now and then I get the craving and I return for that perfectly baked longitudanal tandoori naan (the size of my forearm) blanketing a juicy Kobeda. The set up is simple, they have a fridge with freshly prepared, perfectly marinated meaty skewers of various varieties. You go in, you point at one and 4 minutes later you can enjoy the best meat in Rusholme. Now if I have previously I don't remember but I recently tried the chicken tikka recently. And low and behold it was one of those rare "Holy moly batman" foodie moments. The sauce they marinated the chicken with was close to perfection, the chicken was tender and cooked with expert timing. It was a thing of beauty, the memory of which still lingers, enticing me back into its delicious arms once again. I have thus far resisted, I'm reserving it for specific moments. Namely special celebratory occasions and those morale boosting occasions when life hasn't been nice. I'm fairly certain I'll be returning when neither are relevant and I just happen to be driving past it. I may even knock myself out cold with food coma by ordering a Kobeda/Chick tikka mix *gulp*. It could be my manvfood moment. Admittedly I don't think I'm that way inclined. Because if it was gonna happen it would've already. It's been on the menu for 11 years. No seriously go check it out if you are a carnivore. Word of warning though, your first Kobeda experience will leave all your hunger concerns dealt with for 24 hours at least. So if you plan on eating three meals a day the next day, take a rain check.

The food is fresh from the clay ovens, and you can see that the kebabs are freshly grilled with fresh sauces dripping from either ends. Al Quds is truly a place for excellence in all of the very competitive Curry Mile!

Atlas Shawarma - Falafel wrap - fresh tandoor naan, five pieces, juicy salad and yoghurt - £2!

Find Atlas by looking for the short queue snaking out the door onto Wilmslow Road just before Claremont Road, opposite the renowned Jaffa. Atlas is a takeaway with premises just three metres wide and three stools to perch on by a side-counter. However, this is a very serious food business focused on doing just a few things well - fresh tandoor naan, kebabs and falafel (see photos for the menu). I can't speak for the kebabs, but talking to the Arabs in the queue, there were a lot of not just customers but *big* fans of this place! As cooked to order, the falafels take a little longer to serve but you can be served and out in 5 minutes from the time you order. Broadly speaking, I've found two very different types of falafel in Manchester - the stolid 'staple food' type (which need dips to be palatable) served at places such as Jaffa and Caspian; and the lush, green, melting type typified by Rusholme's eponymous Falafel café - Atlas's are of the Falfel-type! Fascinated, I watched through to the back of the kitchen as the custom falafel-making tool* dipped five times from the chickpea-and-fresh-herb mixture to the fryer. Once cooked, your falafel arrive on a naan bread which has just emerged from the tandoor for you to chose your salad, yoghurt and mayonnaise - I skip the onion and mayonnaise but the rest of it is good, with the tomatoes very juicy. Thing is, with food so clearly cooked to order, I feel it a huge sin to do other than perch on a stool and devour immediately! Such warm, clean, nutritious, juicy goodness! Lastly, at a modest £2 for a falafel wrap and 50p more for a kebab, you only need to be a little convinced by my review to checkout Atlas. Atlas also sells tandoor naan at 4 for £1. In a nice touch, neighbouring Marmara Grill allows sit-in customers to enjoy Atlas breads with their (Marmara) food. So many businesses are named after legends, but how many businesses are actually legendary? Watch Atlas's tandoor specialist at work (making breads in a spotless white dress shirt!), and you can see some of the commitment to hard work that the demi-god Atlas must have had as he accepted his punishment of supporting the weight of the Earth on his shoulders. Feel inspired to go forth into the world with similar integrity. *This is a small metal tool in the shape of a hemisphere on a stick, which seems to operate along the lines of an ice cream scoop.

Er, YUM. William G…read moresaid it all far better than I could, but what a find. I took myself here for birthday lunch thinking, 'Really? Could they be selling falafel sandwiches for a mere two quid? I'm not so sure...' And lo and behold, balls of fresh dough were being placed in the oven, nuggets of fresh falafel were crisping to order in the fryer, and the sign above the counter in this tiny joint read that indeed, they were £2. And it is absolutely four naan breads for a single pound. As you're whizzing by on the bus you might not even notice this place exists, but if you look carefully you're likely to see a queue snaking out of it - as there was when I pointed it out to my boyfriend upon travelling by recently. He noticed the crowd and took it as a good sign, and believe me it is. Gem! It's no frills, no neon, just a simple small Middle Eastern delight serving authentic snacks. I hopped straight back on a bus to the short trip to my house and enjoyed my falafel at home, and it was indeed good. Hot, fresh and made with great ingredients, including oven fresh bread... Between this and Falafel I'm now spoiled for choice for my favourite lunch dependent upon which end of the Curry Mile I'm at. Atlas is closer to my house, Falafel nearer Oxford Road. What more could one ask?

Let me just dip in there see what I can find. Here we go... Never too late to mend your ways.(Wish I could teach my taste buds to avoid carb rich avenue) Practice what you preach. (I'm more of a do as I say not as I do kinda guy really) Maternity is a matter of fact, paternity is a matter of opinion (learned it recently ;) Silence is Golden.(In small doses both are good as..........) Don't judge a book by its cover(my fav), and we'll stop there because A) I'll be here all night and B) the relevance to Nafees rests with these last two proverbs. Let's start with Golden. Ah yes, golden indeed, in the modern (aesthetically obsessive) nip tuck days Nafees have caught up with the times and had a major face lift. Gold is the theme colour they've gone for and I must admit thanks to some decent lighting, it actually looks fantastic. That's it. Short and sweet was it not that reference to "Silence is golden". Moving on.... Now like the turtle in the race with the rabbit, stockport road has been quietly going about its business. What business I hear you as? Well my dear Yelpbooktweeters whilst you've been dining in Didsbury,City centre, Rusholme et al little do you all know that there is a stretch of road developing which may in the not too distant future be able to rival the curry mile for authentic East Asian cuisine. You guys remember my enthusiastic review of the new Sanam which opened its doors not long ago on stockport road? No? How dare you! Yes I'm pointing at you, only kidding you don't have to(well you do but for argument's sake let's just say you don't) . For the yelpnic minorities who HAVE read it (beautiful people, round of applauds) you'll remember it was rather excitable. Well, It seems my optimism rubbed off on the Nafees family, located directly in front. The sweet shop lights up like a golden lantern and seems to draw you in with Pied piper like force. You know I randomly but relevantly just remembered what Peter Jones once said in a dragon's den episode that family and business don't go together. Well that's not really a matter of fact but opinion Mr freakishly tall Jones, because in Asia they seem to never NOT go together. You all know I have never made any secret of my love for such local family run enterprises. Nafees is a prime example of such a business. Small sweet house the wall of which as you enter is adorned with a black & white portrait of a man who started the business many moons ago. It's a picture I'm told from his early days as a professional wrestler. Now, it seems thanks to the wonder of globalization when he migrated to the great city of Manchester he brought a small tradition here with him. Professional wrestlers are famed in Pakistan for their "milk shops" which serve dairy treats and are run as a side business for extra source of income. Great story huh? Well at least I'd like to think that's what inspired him. Whilst I'm not sure this is the case, it is an educated guess. I'll ask him to confirm this next time I'm there, another excuse to go I guess. Let's return to don't judge a book by its cover. For a bite to eat many of us would flock to the recognized cool spots all around Manchester. Longsight is not exactly at the top of that list is it? However things are changing. The delicious variety of treats being offered by the cluster of shops like Anmol, Sanam and Nafees are increasingly attracting a mix demographic of people. I love it a nice common ground, any ground that unites people, don't you? In this case these are foodies unbeliever!!! Hey don't take my word for it. Take a detour and go through Longsight next time you're heading to city centre from the south, It won't take you long to concur. Go, discover, and enjoy the hidden treasury treats on sale, much like particular individual( let's call him "John") who I got talking to as I waited for my chana chaat. (google it) John, a middle aged family man from the leafy posh village of Disley stopped off a while back on the way home from work, he said he's never looked back. He regularly stops off to take treats home and the wife and kids "love em" He also seemed refreshingly educated when it came to the menu, no doubt through experience. He had to be, his favourite dish was Ras Malai (yes, google it again!) Note, Nafees serve up a delicious Ras Malai! So once you're done googling and like the sound of Chana chaat, or ras malai do what John did and take a leap of faith. Even if the two aforementioned dishes don't tickle your fancy, you're bound to find something that does. Don't let the colours on the book cover deny your taste buds opportunities of pastures new. Who knows you may discover gold.

However, my preference is often for hot, wet, cooked food and Lazeeza offers several vegetarian curries cooked to order for £4.50, although rice or bread is not included - which is fair enough at that price! I had bhindi curry (okra), see photo. Presentation was lovely, in a white oval serving dish. I was given the option of 'normal' or 'spicy' - I went for normal, which is by no means bland or free from chilli! The okra was nicely cooked and not slimy as it can be, especially on a buffet. I personally don't like onions, so I would ask them to reduce or omit those next time - customisation being another plus point of cooking to order. But if you like onions, these were really nicely caramelised, adding a distinctive flavour and sweetness to the dish. Naan bread was good and properly served on a woven basket. Serving staff are in branded polo shirts, while the cooking team in their chef's whites look very focused. Lazeeza now has a smart new fascia (see photo) spanning two adjacent units. Viewed from the street, on the right is the (smart) takeaway with 'family only dining' restaurant upstairs; on the left is a traditional Indian sweet store. I really liked the ambience, with a mix of Desi families and young friends sharing lunch and the occasional white customer also. Staff were really helpful and friendly, and happy to chat when things got a bit quieter after the lunchtime rush. As a vegetarian, I felt more comfortable sitting by the door for a bit more fresh air, as the chargriller is in full swing here. Also, I'm not sure how they would resolve it, but the toilet is at the back of the sweet shop next door, reached via a storage area. Plus, there was no toilet paper or hand towels - although lota and hand soap were provided! I wouldn't normally mention toilets, but Lazeeza is otherwise chic enough for a date venue. But if they can cooked to order food just a bit more to my preferences on my return visits, I may have found a new place to add to my all-time favourites list. The combination of hole-in-the-wall prices, smart décor, relaxed atmosphere and food freshly cooked to order is a winner for me.
