This place has been on my restaurant wishlist for a long long time, I never got around to it but…read moreduring the Christmas markets I went to their market stand and it was epic! So I knew I had to go here ASAP. So whilst getting my haircut in the city I decided (with help from a friend) to go here and wow was that a great decision. The chicken theme goes throughout with double entendres all around (which is perfect for my humour). I got sat down very quickly and lots of info was given, but not too much that I couldn't remember it but all necessary. Looking at the inside was great with a booze cage near me, lots of windows, and a dimmer lighting which was really cool. Looking at the menu, there was so much to chose from, but I went for the make my own chicken plate which chicken breast (added charge), my choice of sauce (I went Dr Pepper bbq sauce) and fries, but I upgraded to pulled pork fries. Got seen really quickly and served a drink and then whilst editing a video I decided on the above ... and it came out really quickly .. like I was surprised how quick ... and omg it was so delicious. The bbq sauce was perfect, there was lashings of meat on the fries, the chicken was tender and juicy and amazing. I took my time with it and couldn't finish it .. the wait staff were very attentive knowing I might have wanted another drink (I did) and it was just amazing. Will deffo have to go back here many many times.

It's also very good value, with that burger priced at £5 and chilli cheese fries and trailer trash fries, meals in themselves, at £4. They also do wings which I shall go back to try. The trailer trash fries involve pulled pork and are really delicious - that's about as good as pulled pork as I've had in Manchester, I think better than Red's or Cocka Doodle Moo down the road in Hazel Grove. My burger involved some good quality bacon, a fried patty of mac and cheese. I would have liked some ketchup but couldn't see it around and feared insulting the staff by adding to their masterpiece! The burger meat isn't quite as good as Filthy Cow, but good nonetheless. Some of the other creations get pretty wild Almost Famous-style, including a donut burger (or is that Solita?). I really liked the set up of the restaurant which had red booths, country music playing and drinks served in plastic red cups. As is obvious from the review it takes a lot of the best of the other burger restaurants in Greater Manchester and puts them together in a winning combo. I am close enough to walk to this place, which is both good and bad for my health (especially as they do takeaway). No doubt I will be back.

If you check their social media they post a special on Facebook every Friday/Saturday and they're typically on par if not better than the usual line up on the menu. This probably has a direct correlation with the time I stopped being skinny too, but hey! Piling on a few pounds in exchange for this delightful cuisine is well worth it. Chicken King on first appearance looks like your standard KFC rip off - they even stole KFC's colour scheme the scoundrels! However unlike many of the other KFC rip-off, Chicken King gives the almighty KFC a run for it's money. The best thing at Chicken King are the Hot Wings. They are chicken wings in spicy batter then deep fried to a perfect crisp. Not for the calorie counters among us, they are so juicy and greasy and tasty and just like heaven. I could eat them for days and days and days. In fact; my friends and I once set out to do the 50 Hot Wing Challenge, which is as self-explanatory as it sounds. I am ashamed to say I failed, my friend did not though, and for this reason and this reason alone; he is my hero. The Chicken King chips are worth a mention. Thin, crispy and piled with salt they are yummy! Probably the best chips from any take-away in Fallow. For this reason Chicken King is probably worth a visit even if you're not a chicken fan.

It is probably just nostalgia (the vision of the ghost of the memory of the place seen through a veil of cidery tears) but I genuinely think it is the best takeaway in Fallowfield - It's open until an ungodly hour; the staff are friendly and the fried chicken is hot, juicy and slides apart in your dried-out, booze-shot mouth. Many is the time friends and I have wandered here late and offering a handful of change requested 'one chicken king, sir!' and been presented with a cardboard box of crispy, salty glory. Try the skyscraper burger which is almost exactly like a KFC tower burger except that you can buy it in Fallowfield at quarter to four in the morning and wander home, spilling it all down yourself. They do dinky pots of mayonnaise, ketchup and barbecue sauce and tiny sachets of salt - everything in perfect little portions so that you don't even have to think about it which is great because at that time of the morning there won't be much thought involved in anything you're doing. Long live the Chicken King.

I ordered a Chicken Nugget meal, and my friend ordered a meal with 2PC of chicken, which comes with chips which I can only presume were warmed up. The food took quite a while to come, and I even had to phone up once, the staff at the shop were unhelpful which made me glad I placed the order online. The food was really greasy, it wasn't very nice, It was something I basically only ate because I was hungry, but in some parts, you could basically squeeze the grease off, parts of the nugget were hard, it just didn't seem very pleasant. The portion size was also quite poor, but I wouldn't want any more of it based on how it tasted, it was simply greasy and warmed up which shows a huge decline on standard and that is the real shame. Afterwards, I thought the worst part was over, however it was not, as I was violently vomiting chicken sick, I hate to be too disgusting, but there was just so much, it showed instant food poisoning which I had not experienced since my first night in Barcelona where I ate in a restaurant with rats, I am not accusing Chicken Lodge to have a secret ingredient of rat droppings, but perhaps their hygiene standards are similar. The complaints handling system was awful pathetic, I had to ring in twice and was told a manager would get back to me, and they never did, I do have my suspicions the person I spoke to on the phone was the manager, despite offering no refund or apology, I was simply told he came in at midnight, and the time before I left my contact details. I was never contacted back which is a real shame considering how bad the food was and how bad the effects were, so I strongly feel Chicken Lodge and their awful food and hygiene standards deserves to be the latest place on my "Avoid at all costs" list deserving a single one-star rating. It is a real shame to see a business like Chicken Lodge go downhill, downhill perhaps to the same level as Manchester United when Ferguson left, however the latter is rather enjoyable for me to watch as a Manchester City fan, but the poor food and the after-effects including sickness and complaint handling, means even one star is too generous for this place and it is a real shame Chicken Lodge are now the 500th place to warrant a single one star rating from myself.
