Key Largo holds some sentimental value to me. It was the first place that I played poker in Australia. OK, so it's only a small thing, but it's still a first, and everyone loves to remember firsts. It's also the only thing that really gives this bar any character. That's not to say it's a bad bar as such, but it's a bar-of-convenience more than anything else. Located next to the Vibe Hotel, and down the hill from the ever-lively Kings Cross, it offers a quiet alternative to the bustling bars up the road. It's generally open till late Thursdays through Saturdays, although the actual closing times seem to be decided by the staff on duty.
The TAB area is fairly prominent and seems to be the main source of interest to customers, along with the pokies which are housed in a room behind a set of swinging saloon-esque doors. The current bistro-tenants are a relatively new addition, serving the usual pub fare - I haven't tried it yet, so I will refrain from judgement. They appear to be trying to tempt people in with more activities, the success of which have been variable, but at least they're trying! They also have a big screen, which is always a plus if you're into your sport.
So if you fancy a quiet beer and a spot to watch the footy, then this isn't a bad choice and it's right next to Rushcutters Bay park, so not a bad stop after a bit of sun bathing but I wouldn't be planning a night out here! read more
