The hotel is situated right on the seafront in Bacton on the border with Walcot. We were booked in for two nights. On arrival, we had some difficulty getting attention using the bell at reception and waited some time before getting some assistance from the bar. The member of staff did not introduce herself or greet us and showed us to our room with minimum communication- not a good start. The room was spacious, very warm with a large pine bed, tv,kettle, tea & coffee, and ample furniture. The hotel also has free WiFi, which we made good use of. The ensuite shower room appeared to be fairly new with a large shower, toilet and sink. We were happy with the room apart from the mattress which was flat, lumpy and uncomfortable.
On our first evening we went to the bar and had some beer from bottles, of which, there was a very good selection. We chose poached salmon for our main course and asked for a wine list. There was no wine list but were told about a small selection of wines available and these were the sort you
might find in a supermarket or small store, perfectly OK but difficult to choose without a description to read. The meal was OK but nothing special, the salmon over-cooked.
The following morning we went down for breakfast and were greeted by the 2nd member of staff we had seen, who was polite and friendly. We were offered tea or coffee, cereals, toast and preserves from a buffet, dried fruit compote with yogurt and a choice of either english cooked breakfast or locally smoked kippers (actually from the smokery at Cley further up the coast). We chose the kippers which were excellent and I would highly recommend them. The chef served us our cooked breakfast and was very attentive and friendly giving excellent customer service.
The second evening we chose Thai Green Curry which was very nice, all washed down with more of the excellent bottled beer.
Our second morning, we were again served by the very amicable chef Russell, who cooked us an excellent English breakfast served with toast.
Overall, we think the hotel is a good choice for the quality of food served, especially the excellent breakfasts, it was clean and warm, good value with only one serious negative for us - the mattress in room 1! read more
