I absolutely love the Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead! There was so much more to do than I…read moreexpected, and both my elementary-age son and toddler had a fantastic time. We spent a lot of time riding the toy tractors, fishing, mining for gold, playing with the goats, and--of course--washing our hands over and over. We also took a hayrack ride with the famous Budweiser horses, which was a real treat. There are various buildings with eateries, small museums, and interactive exhibits. I was pleasantly surprised--and happy--that they sell healthy (and not-so-healthy) kid-friendly food. The Farmstead is also incredibly affordable. Admission is only $5, and most activities and food options are very reasonably priced. The size is perfect--big enough to explore without feeling crowded, but manageable enough to see most activities in a couple of hours. Plus, it's all outdoors with live animals, which makes it extra fun. The Farmstead depicts a Kansas family farm in the early 1900s, with over 250 animals, a country schoolhouse, and plenty of hands-on activities. Highly recommend for families looking for an educational, fun, and affordable day out!

If you go right at opening, you can catch the running of the baby goats! They also have great seasonal activities like their extensive light show during the holidays, which has been added to our family traditions! They have a hay ride to a pumpkin patch in the fall and outdoor movies during the summer! Some everyday activities are extra money, but you can definitely have fun without spending more than the entrance fee! One down side is you can't bring your own food for lunch, but they have some tables outside of the area so you could still bring a lunch. Deanna Rose is definitely worth bringing your kids to!

Fall in the midwest is fleeting but amazing all the same. Everyone has to cram their favorite fall…read moreactivities into those October weekends, like pumpkin picking, the perfect IG shot, cider and hayrides. Schaake's covers you for all of the above, just outside of Lawrence. Some other area pumpkin patches and farms offer pumpkin "picking" by simply setting up a ton of pumpkins for you to pick from a pile which is essentially the same as a grocery store. Schaake's is great because you can actually traipse through the fields, step over the vines and pluck your own pumpkins straight from the farm. In non-Covid times, they have a tractor ride to take you out and it'll pick you up so you don't have to haul them back. Covid times, they've added wheelbarrows up front so you can haul them easily. There are other little fun things here like a pumpkin slingshot, a chicken coop, concessions with cider & kettle corn, hay bale maze, cows, and an old school playground area. If you like the peaceful openness of rural Kansas, this farm will certainly deliver on that, even though it's very close to Lawrence. If it's one of those perfect weekends in October, know that it's going to be very busy, but it's always fun no matter how packed it gets. It's worth the trip over from KC as well as we haven't found a better pumpkin patch anywhere around.

I went out to…read moreget pumpkins for Halloween and try to get them from local farms instead of chain stores. This farm was about 40 minutes south west of my home in KCMO and located right off the roadway. My wife and I were greeted by one of the neighbors who helps keep an eye on the farm and run the register for the stand. They have plenty of live berry bushes and small trees in the nursery part of the farm and so many pumpkins. You couldn't walk five feet without finding more pumpkins!! They have a cute little building which houses all the canned jams, jellies, honey, and syrups that they have available. My wife and I spotted some peach and blackberry jalapeño jam and I was hooked!! Who doesn't love a little kick to their morning toast? They even had a small corn maze in the back of the farm for kids. As well as a sizable bonfire pit set right next to a stream that looks like it's amazing on cool autumn nights. They have a rabbit, three donkeys, and a cat who wonders the property. Being an animal lover I couldn't resist saying hello to the donkeys. One was rather happy to see me pick up the brush and pet him for 10 minutes while the other two eyed me down. When we were there it was quite and peaceful as we were the only customers. Talking with the lady who helped us she said "wait until tomorrow and this place will be full". She went on to tell us that it's mainly busy with school trips during the week and that on Wednesday they had a kindergarten class come through to learn and make their own cider. Did I mention that yet? You can schedule a hayride and make your own fresh squeezed cider!! If that's not a reason to get some friends together this fall then I don't know what is!! If you're looking for a cute intimate farm to get your fresh pumpkins look no further!! This place is worth the drive.
