We used Kentmere for 13 years and everyone we've ever dealt with there has been wonderful. Dr. Coogan was our main Vet for many years and then when he stepped away from the practice, Dr. Synder became our main Vet. We recently had to say goodbye to our senior dog Newt and I am so grateful to the staff at Kentmere for all their care and compassion. Dr. Synder was wonderful, especially these last few months when our dog's health began to deteriorate. The beautiful sympathy card you sent, signed by the entire staff, was most appreciated. Fine for annual check-ups & vaccinations, but I urge you to seek care elsewhere for any serious health concerns. Brandywine Veterinary Hospital is a great nearby alternative for more attentive and more knowledgeable pet care. Your pet deserves the best and there's certainly better Vets than Kentmere. P.S. This practice is unlike any other Ive taken my pets to in the past.....they put the animals and their care first!!! They are not out to "run" up a bill, they involve you in the decision making process. Our dog spent the best of his mature years with this practice( specifically Dr. coogan) and at 16, when it was time to give him peace this practice was supporting me the entire way. I have been bringing my fur-babies to Kentmere since 2016. My animals typically get seen by Dr.Snyder or Dr.Ireland. They both always provide great care. The staff are always really good with my animals. Recently we took our sick cat in and had to leave him overnight. Unfortunately he had to be put to rest. Every step that Kentmere did exceeded any thing I had thought would happen. My husband and I were able to be there while our cat was put to sleep. Dr.Ireland walked us through everything she would be doing and again while she was doing it. We just got enough courage to open the "bag" last night. Completely blown away with everything she did for us as a memorial for our cat. read more

Long hold times, no thorough, not friendly, cat got poop on him and they didn't wipe him down. I find their demeanor kind of cold, at least to me, but I am comparing to my last vet who was not located in a city so maybe this is just the way it is or maybe they are too busy and overworked. When I got my cat home, I noticed a clicking when he walked. They sent my cat home with cat litter "cement" on his paw. Never going back. read more

As other reviews have mentioned, Dr Coogan is not going to win any congeniality contests. He is very direct, doesn't want to engage in small talk, and will be very blunt with you. If you have sensitive feelings and you want your vet to become a good friend, you should go somewhere else. We started going to Dr Coogan on the recommendation of a friend who has used him for decades. The reason why Dr Coogan's office is tiny and he seems in a rush is because he runs a very busy practice and he charges considerably lower rates than other practices that have huge overhead, which gets passed on to you the customer. So if it makes you feel better to have a Vet who also is a counselor for you, and has a very nice shiny new building, be aware that you are paying for that kind of experience. If you want a vet who has an impeccable reputation and will save you a couple hundred dollars a year. Dr Coogan is your man. read more

For the record, If there was an option for 0 stars I would've chosen that. Our experience with this vet was awful from the jump and shame on us for attempting to use their services a second time. First, our 3-month-old bulldog gets an allergic reaction from the shots that Dr. Coogan gives her. Because they can't see her for an emergency appt, I'm forced to go to Wilmington Animal Hospital since they can see her right away. Turns out the shot he had given her was mixed with another substance that triggered the allergic reaction in our pup. WAH took such great care of her that we decided to continue going there for the rest of her vaccines. She is now 7 months and due for spaying. Because spaying bulldogs is a high-risk procedure and very expensive, I wanted to make sure I had the best of the best to work on her. Some family friends that have 5 bulldogs suggested we try Dr. Coogan again because he successfully operated on them for a fraction of what I was quoted. You can understand my immediate hesitancy to return there given my past experience, however, I took the chance anyway because I needed this procedure done correctly. Call to book the appt, they can't find her records anywhere. RED FLAG. "That's odd, we've been there before a couple times as clients but got our records transferred to WAH. I'll make sure they send them back so you have everything". They received the records the next day and the appointment was booked. I show up for the appointment this morning and same deal. "We can't find your profile". ANOTHER RED FLAG "I've been here before and transferred to WAH. I got the records transferred over back to here so you can have her info". It wasn't an issue according to the front desk so they continued to show me to a room and I waited for the doctor. However, switching to another doctor because I was scared for my dog's life was the most ridiculous, back-stabbing and serious offense that I could have ever done in Dr. Coogan's eyes. He refused to see my pup in the most arrogant manner and I've never been so disrespected by a veterinarian like that. For someone that is so "experienced" with veterinary practices, you'd think he'd be more understanding for people making decisions that prioritize their pet's lives rather than being overly sensitive to the fact that they stopped being your client. It truly baffles me that he thought our relationship meant that much to him given he doesn't even know my name or spent more than 30 seconds with us each visit. Landing my plane, I've never experienced a more ignorant, unprofessional staff. Fun fact Kentmere, according to the AVMA, veterinary offices are supposed to keep records 3 years after the last entry. So given that statement alone, my experiences with you, and the fact that you deleted my dog's records from your system, I will never trust or recommend this practice again. read more

I truly only have good things to say about this Vet. As other reviewers have mentioned, Dr. Koogan does not have the most sensitive bedside manner. He is very direct and to the point, but he care for the animals is top notch. Dr. Ireland is also incredible - she is sweet and very communicative, taking as much time as needed to answer all of your questions. I have taken 3 of my cats there for the last 10 years. I really like that they do not do unnecessary procedures to drive the cost up, and they ask you ahead of time before doing anything you did not initially go in for. There have been times were I have not been charged for services or check ups out of kindness. When it was time to put one of my kitties down, the entire staff was so nice and comforting. They have been much better about returning calls and doing follow-ups, and they're always able to squeeze me in for an appointment. read more

This quaint little vet office seems so wonderful on the outside. And once you step in, you feel like you've made the right decision. From the office personnel to the vet assistants, it's all very good. However, our experience with the vet was a little lackluster. Both times we were there, the doctor spent less than 5 min with the dog without ever greeting him. The first routine checkup yielded, "No fleas," he said. Within days, our Bull Terrier had them and had developed an allergic reaction to the bites. So we went back to the same vet. After a quick run through with the comb, "No fleas," he said again. Then his assistant who was holding Clyde, our dog, moved his fingers through the hair and found them. I'm thankful that he didn't charge us for the second exam, although there were charges for a flea bath and Advantage application and one dose of Depo Medrol. The total bill was still $135. After recently moving to this city I hope to find a vet who can treat a dog much the same way I would personally want to be treated. That will at least mean spending a bit of time looking more closely and caring more expressly. If you're in Wilmington, my hunch is that you can find a better vet; at least one where the service is more equal to the cost. read more

On Friday, August 17th I found that a new kitten I had adopted about a week earlier was limping on his front leg. By the early afternoon he was lethargic, shaking, and cried every time he was picked up. I made an appointment at Kentmere with a new vet we had not seen before, Dr. Tancredi, for that afternoon. Dr. Tancredi was not especially warm with me or the kitten, but having grown used to Dr. Coogan's matter-of-fact manner this did not bother me. He asked about the lameness, and I told him it had come on suddenly, and also told him of the kitten's near-constant shaking. He stood the kitten up, flexed the lame paw that the kitten was favoring, eliciting a sharp cry from the kitten, and then proceeded to do the same again. That was the entirety of Dr. Tancredi's physical examination of my kitten. He did not take the kitten's temperature, examine the kitten elsewhere, or even watch him walk. He told me it was likely a soft-tissue injury and that he would prescribe anti-inflammatories. He referred to my male kitten as a "she" throughout the entire examination, despite the cat's name being "Mr. Bojangles." I asked if I should ice the paw, and Dr. Tancredi snickered and responded with a wry "if it makes you feel better," and then left to get the anti-inflammatories. He returned, told me that the kitten was too small for anti-inflammatories and said, "now the icing sounds like a good idea." He told me that if the lameness was still present by Monday to return, and promptly left, calling out "no charge for today" behind him as he exited the room. I sat in the examination room for nearly a minute afterward confused as to whether that flippant remark, shouted as Dr. Tancredi had his back to me and was leaving, was the conclusion of our visit. The kitten remained alarmingly lethargic for the rest of the day, and the following morning appeared to be limping on a different leg and was still shaking quite badly. I called Kentmere for another appointment, mentioned that the kitten was still shaking and seemed to be doing worse. Dr. Tancredi said, "well, now that he is presenting with new symptoms you should bring him back in." These were, in fact, not new symptoms but the very same ones I had complained of the day earlier. Frustrated, I made an appointment with a different vet, and the experience was entirely different: she greeted the kitten warmly, inspected him thoroughly and closely, took his temperature, watched him walk, and asked me several questions. As it turns out Bo had a severe fever (hence the shaking) and appeared to have the calicivirus. The vet administered IV fluids, gave Bo an antibiotic for any secondary illnesses that could follow from the virus, and gave him a small dose of anti-inflammatories and provided us with a pack of the same. That afternoon he was alert, curious, and not shaking. By Sunday he was walking around, and by Monday he was his happy, confident, mischievous self. My displeasure with my visit with Dr. Tancredi is two-fold: 1) the way he treated and spoke to me was glib, callous, and quite frankly, rude; and 2) the way he treated my kitten was as though the examination was an inconvenience. When speaking to me Dr. Tancredi was dismissive, and I got the distinct impression he thought I was overreacting to a simple kitten sprain. I found the comment that I should ice Bo's paw "if it made me feel better" incredibly insulting, implying that I was being silly or overly cautious. Though far more upsetting than his rudeness towards me was his lack of interest in Bo. Had Dr. Tancredi taken the minute it took the second vet we saw to take Bo's temperature he would have realized right away that Bo was not suffering from a sprain. Bo shivered and shook with a high fever unnecessarily for a whole extra evening because of Dr. Tancredi's indifferent and ineffectual examination of what turned out to be a pretty sick little guy. I left Kentmere Friday afternoon feeling as though my pet's sickness had been trivialized, my concern mocked, and like I had wasted Dr. Tancredi's time. By contrast, I left our other vet appointment on Saturday happy and comfortable in the knowledge that Bo was getting the care and help he needed and deserved, and that I was treated like a thoughtful and contentious owner. I am sorry to say that after nearly ten years of both my mother and my animals being seen at Kentmere we will not ever be returning to this practice again. Though we value and appreciate Dr. Coogan for his excellent service to our other animals, this experience with Dr. Tancredi was enough to warrant a permanent change. My two cats and my mothers two cats and one dog will no longer be patients at Kentmere, and both she and I will strongly advise friends and family with pets to stay away from this practice due to its unconscionable lack of care and professionalism. read more

My family and I have been coming to Dr Coogan for the past 26 years. I have felt so lucky to have found a vet that cares so deeply for his patients. His staff are a wonderful, caring group! Today he was kind enough to come to our house and help our 12 yr old Boston Terrier transition. While not a talkative person, he gives honest and trustworthy advice. Absolutely shocked at the lack of professionalism, service and PRICE! We've taken our puppy here over the last year, only a couple of visits prior to this past week. The staff is generally very friendly and helpful, but it is the Veterinarian himself who stuns me with both his price gouging and lack of attention. On Friday, October 23 I took the dog in to be checked-out for what appears to be a small cyst on his lip. After walking into the exam room, having him weighed by the vet tech, Dr. Coogan came in; without examining the dog or even touching him, immediately tells me "yeah that could be a cyst or a little folliculitis. Just watch it for a while and bring him back in two weeks..." then turns to walk away. I quickly said "I have a couple more questions for you.." so he stops. And I told him the large bump had been there a couple of weeks already, actually longer. He again tells me to just watch it and come back. I quickly asked about the dog's weight and if it was okay, and he tells me the dog should weight two pounds less. My entire visit was less that one minute... MAYBE slightly over 60 seconds.. The fee? OVER $60 !!!!! $61 to be exact. I was stunned. The receptionist even glanced at my chart again before giving me the cost, she was apparently shocked herself. This is hands-down the most callous, uncaring, shockingly bad excuse for veterinary medicine I have ever encountered.. And I'll say here that I have worked for a series of veterinarians during high school and college and have had dogs since I was a kid. I'm stunned, offended and shocked at the lack of service here and the price which came with it. **NOTE: Kentmere Veterinary Clinic also charges a whopping $15 to trim your dog's nail.. Even for a small dog.. It's $9 at Pet Smart and free if you can get one of the coupons.. Stay away from this place. read more

I was disappointed w/ my visit to Kentmere. Was told my cats blood work would be back the next a.m. & that did NOT happen! My Vet did not return my calls -- Took two days 6 phone calls w/ no return call from my Vet. Had to keep going back to Lovering Ave in person to finally get results. Took my cat to Wilmington Vet Hospital the next day and my cat received superb service. I will never take my cat back to Kentmere, ever! Hands down the best! I would recommend Kentmere to anyone! I have been other places where they just run tests with out any explanation then give you the bill. You are left wondering if the tests were necessary, Dr Coogan and his staff take time to explain any needed tests and will help you if you want other options. We have 3 dogs - all rescues - we don't know some of their back grounds or ages. Our latest rescue has congestive heart failure and wasn't doing too good when we found him over a year ago. We found hi on Union St - eye infection, jaw infection, nails so long they curled under his toe pads. Dr Coogan looked him over and we talked about how to make him comfortable - none of us were hopeful at the time. It has been almost 2 years and our pup is doing great! We took all of Dr Coogan's advise and he is thriving - looks and acts like a new dog! We would have given up if it weren't for Kentmere. If you are looking for a vet who will talk to you about your pet, listen to you, come up with solutions for treatment - this is the vet for you! read more

Dr. Coogan has been our veterinarian for more than 25 years. We would not consider going to any other practice even though there are several that are closer to where we live. The other positive reviews here are spot on - I would also emphasize that Dr. Coogan is a very compassionate and kind person. He will give you his honest and expert opinion in a direct manner; I guess some people read that differently than we do. This low rating is based on my experience with Dr Ireland. I took my 14 year old Boxer Tucker to see her. Tucker at times can not keep his food down and has lost the ability to control his bowels. He cries out like he is having pain. He also has a blue haze over his eyes. Dr Ireland said he has eye bubbles ? Without performing any tests such as an ophthalmoscope to rule out cataracts or any other possible reason. She felt around his hind leg area and diagnosed arthritis, even though Tucker showed no signs of discomfort during this exam. Tucker also has a small growth on his chest which is just like the one my previous Boxer had which Dr Kevin Coogan diagnosed as cancer. My previous dog Polo's growth grew and become very large. Dr Kevin told me that he felt no further treatment could stop this condition. I could put him down then or take him home to spend his last days with me. I would have to bring Polo back when the growth began seeping. A year later the growth starting seeping and Polo was put to sleep peacefully. Dr Ireland told me that this made no sense to her, without looking into Polo's file. I told her Tucker's growth was growing larger as Polo's had ? My other concern with Tucker was his agressive behaviour towards other people and animals. I told her that he had attacked another dog while I was walking him. I am a 66 year old senior with major and chronic back issues which I had major surgery for. It has become dangerously difficult for me to walk him. People in my neighborhood see us and run in fear away from us with their dogs in tow. I have had Tucker since he was born. If am not there to feed him he will not eat or drink. He is not adoptable, and I feel this would be cruel to do so. Dr Ireland told me that she would not honor my wishes to put Tucker down ? She offered medication with no guarantee this regiment would help. I know and love my dog that I have had since his birth. I think I know what is best for Tucker. Dr Ireland told me that as a pet owner I should have realized what I signed up for ? Dr Authur Coogan, Kevin's dad was an old school vet who took care of my pets always. He was my first Boxer Polo's vet who Dr Kevin took care of after Dr Authur passed away. They practice with sense, realizing that how much money spent on most times senseless procedures proves nothing about how much one loves their family members called pets. I highly recommend Dr Coogan, especially treating senior pets. Dr Ireland you are one of those vets Kevin's dad would roll his eyes at dismiss as a silly girl with a degree and no common sense and ability to listen to the pet owner. read more

I love Dr. Coogan and his staff...what I like about Dr. Coogan the most is his common sense approach...he doesn't immediately order a bunch of tests that are going to cost a lot of money as soon as he sees my dog. He is a bit more conservative and 99% of the time his diagnosis has been spot on. We work with a dog rescue which means that Dr. Coogan gets to see them at least once and I am in the office once every 4 to 6 weeks. He has been wonderful with the rescue as well- he has been very generous with his services for our foster dogs (a huge help to us) which means a lot considering he has a small business and his time is limited. I recommend Dr. Coogan all the time...been going to Kentmere for 8 years and very happy with the service they have provided. read more

Yes, the staff are nice and the wait times are short. But that is not worth your pet's life. Please do not go here! My cat is dead because of GROSS NEGLIGANCE on multiple levels from this "practice." 1) I was misinformed about how to manage my cat's diabetes, told I can test with pee-sticks, and blood tests were unnecessary. I found this is not the case when talking to the ER doc trying to revive my cat. 2) When I brought my cat to the vet concerned because he was again peeing more, seemed lethargic and wobbly, Kentmere Vet Hospital MISSED the TEXTBOOK signs of acidosis, which is a COMMON complication of diabetes, and CUREABLE if caught early enough. 3) They DELAYED reading me my cat's blood results, even when I called multiple times and said I thought he was dying and was in respiratory distress. I waited 2 DAYS from expressing concern to being told my cat's condition was beyond their scope. 4) They FAILED TO INFORM me about the Vet ER (Vet Specialty Center) down the road until they gave me the test results, which I had to wait hours "for the doctor to read," EVEN THOUGH THE RESULTS WERE READY. These house could have improved my cat's outcomes, which they knew were a poor prognosis, yet still made me wait/ made him suffer, for formality. 5) They told me to STOP giving my cat insulin, when that is THE OPPOSITE of what should be done in his condition, and exacerbated it. He needed MORE insulin, which they gave him immediately at the ER. By the time we heard that the vet center existed, it was 2 days after I brought him to the clinic expressing concern, during which I had called back multiple times reporting on his rapid decline, even saying that he was in respiratory distress and I thought he was dying. THEY DID NOTHING WHEN I SAID THIS!!! GAVE ME NO OPTIONS!!! MADE ME WAIT FOR BLOODWORK!!! After being given the blood work results and told of the ER, we took him right away to the vet specialty center as an emergency patient, and he spent 2 days on life support, but was too far in at that point to be saved. My baby died because of GROSS NEGLIGENCE by this center. He had a TEXT BOOK CASE of a COMMON, CUREABLE condition. I was not taken seriously or told of the vet ER until it was too late. If I made a smarter choice of a vet, or listened to my gut when Dr. Coogan frequently suggested ways to, in my opinion, "cut corners," or taken it seriously when I asked for vaccinations and the tech forgot to give them that visit, my cat would still be alive If your pet goes here and is doing well, it may just be because they are healthy. I'd pull them before any real medical care is needed. This vet should be stripped of his license. I can't even imagine this level of negligence. To add insult to injury, Dog Food's ashes were delivered to this terrible vet, and they handed them over the counter without a word. No, "sorry for your loss" or anything. Dispicable. read more

Dr. Coogan is compassionate and knowledgeable. His approach is very thoughtful and reasonable; he's not overly aggressive with treatment. He's very fair with pricing. Angry vet. I had been going to Dr. Coogan since I moved to Wilmington a few years ago. I had an appointment to bring my two dogs that have been going for 2.5 years and my new husband's dog, who would have been a first time patient. We went for exams and a heartworm test. The tech asked about their vaccines which were coming due but Dr. Coogan only offers annual vaccines instead of 3 year vaccines, which they'd been getting. Penny gets very ill from the vaccines and I said that I'd prefer to get her a three year vaccine even if I had to bring her somewhere else for it. The vet tech left the room and came back and told us that we had to leave, that Dr. Coogan would only see us if we came for vaccines as well. We asked to speak with him and he came into the room angry and told us to leave. He said that we couldn't choose what we'd come to him for, he didn't want us as patients. I was happy with this vet for years and never experienced a vet coming into the room and yelling at me, telling me to get out. My dogs had seen Dr. Coogan whenever they were sick or needed care for the past few years. I had made the appointment for the three dogs for exams and heartworm tests, if he had such a requirement that we had to have vaccines there and could only do a one year vaccine they should have let us know when we made the appointment. This was upsetting and ridiculous. His behavior was unacceptable and unprovoked. Terrible choice for a vet. read more

Dr. Coogan is a hands-on, no nonsense vet, but he is compassionate when it's appropriate & actually has a good sense of humor. Occasionally I've heard someone comment that he's gruff--that is more indicative of the person making the comment than about Dr. Coogan. He isn't gruff, but he doesn't waste a lot of time socializing or ooo-ing & aaah-ing over your precious boy or girl. He runs a busy practice with some very sick animals & works hard. He takes time to answer all of my questions & he understands what we treatments we can afford and what we can do without at no expense to our pets health. Last year he euthanized our 14 year old, much loved dog & Dr. Coogan maintained an attitude of compassion and respect, giving us time alone with her after she passed. We now have 2 dogs & 3 cats; some are aging, which means more health issues & more visits to Dr. Coogan, and every visit has been a satisfying & comforting experience. The front office staff are great, particularly Diana,who works day shift. She is sweet & kind, soft spoken & tries to remember everyone's name. We had to take our beloved cat, Luna, to Dr. Coogan tonight to be euthanized. He and his staff were so wonderful and thoughtful. It was a tough decision. Luna was 16 but failing and Dr. Coogan eased our minds but letting us know we were doing the right thing and letting Luna go with dignity. Much appreciated. He took time with us and also told us he would send a bill rather than our having to pay during this difficult time. He is pragmatic but also compassionate. Can't ask for anything more. read more

Dr. Coogan is compassionate, kind, attentive and pragmatic. The absolute best in my mind. My 12 year old black lab, Marley, was Dr. Coogan's patient for many happy years. A few things especially impressed me. 1. He always remembered Marley and my family. How does he keep them all straight?? 2. There were several circumstances where we had multiple visits for a particular problem and in some cases, he simply waived the fee and charged us for the medication. 3. He was cautious about putting an older dog under for surgery. As many old dogs do, Marley had lumps. Our past vet wanted to remove them, send them to Penn for biopsies, and brush his teeth while he was under for almost $1000. Dr. Coogan took a look at the lumps and based on experience and the way they felt, suggested that we keep an eye on the lumps before risking his life with anethestia. This was the right decision. Marley lived for several years after that decision although we monitored them for any changes and growth. In fact, even when Marley was in for a stomach virus, I remember Dr. Coogan taking the time to check out the lumps and address them as well - unsolicited. 4. Once when Marley was in his last year, he became terribly dehydrated and lost all energy. I came home from work and found him barely able to walk. Dr. Coogan had already left for the day, but the clinic called him and he came back to care for him and saved his life. 5. He was there for us and Marley until the end. He helped me and my husband through the most difficult decision we've ever had to make. He also helped us through the process of putting him to sleep. My husband didn't want to stay for the procedure and told Dr. Coogan so. I'll never forget what Dr. Coogan said to him. He said, "I know this is difficult, but I don't want to to regret anything. I can help you through this." My husband decided to stay and he we are both thankful for that. read more

Love Kentmere Vet and Dr. Coogan. I've had my dog for just about 5 years and he has been wonderful since day one when I took her for her first shots. Unfortunately we've had to see the doctor more than I'd like due to my dog's allergies. At the beginning when we were trying to determine what was causing the hair loss he was very patient as we tried different things to make her comfortable. He would often not charge for follow-up visits, only for the meds he was prescribing and they were very reasonable. He eventually referred us to a specialty vet but in the end we came back to Dr. Coogan as the price with the specialist was just too much. He has just been great with my dog and has been very upfront with me about the possible outcomes from long term medication. I feel confident that he has my dog's best interest at heart! read more
