For the skimmers: 1. her prices are shockingly reasonable 2. her assessments/fittings are super sharp and fast. 3. she's been doing this work for a very long time (I've known of her for at least 15 years and she was a bit of a guru when I met her. Very experienced. Seriously, Ninel is as good as it gets. I first encountered her in roughly 2002 when I found a vintage cocktail dress that needed MAJOR reconstruction to fit me. I couldn't resist the Thrift store budget price of $1.00. I brought it to Ninel and she made it fit, like magic. I say "like magic" because it is not magic but ather the kind of skill that years in the business will earn you. She just makes it seem like magic. I've also brought her several small projects like pants hemming and simple darting. Recently, I brought her my dream wedding dress. I purchased it in the only size the store had left... a full size too small. I had intended to do major fitness to get into it (pause for laughter) but ended up needing major reconstruction (on the dress, not my body). The dress needed major deconstruction and reconstruction; she purchased and matched the fabric for the under-slips. She literally had to take the thing apart and put it back together. We're talking a DELICATE lace top layer with tons of odd angles and sequins; she pulled it off and now I can pull off the dress I could not turn away from even though it was WAY too small. I had Ninel alter a Lela Rose wedding gown that retailed for over $5,000 and she did an amazing job. This dress needed to have a LOT of work done - the entire bustle was moved (about 20 ties total!), shoulders adjusted (two layers), hemming of the whole dress, and slimming through the bust, waist, hips, all while maintaining the original intricate design of the dress. Ninel not only did a beautiful job, she exceeded my expectations. She was able to get my dress tailored for my wedding in about a month, which is very short notice for wedding dress alterations. She's insanely knowledgable about how alterations effect how a dress moves, how the fabric should lay, etc. She even explained to me the best way to stand in the dress, how to carry the hem so I don't wrinkle the silk, and personally called a cleaners for me regarding steaming my dress. Appointments were always on time and she gave me her full attention. She always made sure to ask me about my thoughts regarding every detail of my dress alteration and I never felt rushed. I brought my Monique Lhuillier wedding dress to Ninel after finding her on Yelp. She did a wonderful job and my dress ended up looking and fitting even better than I expected! I went in to have my wedding dress altered about six weeks ago. I scheduled my final fitting the same day I was there and I was assured it would be ready by the time I returned. I showed up for my final fitting and when I put on the dress I realized he had not worked on it at all since I had left it there six weeks ago and I became very anxious. The dress was not hemmed, the straps were not adjusted, it was supposed to be taken in a little and it was still very big on me, the bustle had also not been added. When I asked what he had done to the dress since my first fitting, he tried to turn it back on me and say this was my first fitting and I had never come here before with the dress (even though I didn't walk in with the dress and it was sitting in the changing room when I came in). When I showed him the receipt he had given me listing the work he was going to do, the measurements he had taken, and the cost, he changed his tune and said he was going to do all the work that same day. I was in complete shock my wedding is less than a month away and the dress still needed a ton of work. I ended up leaving and taking the dress elsewhere since I couldn't trust that he would actually get the dress done in time. Brides please be wary of taking your dress here. I don't ever write reviews but I am genuinely worried this man does not know what he is doing and more brides will be scrambling to get their dress altered in time like I did! read more

Ninel altered my consignment wedding dress and she did such an amazing job. She is so professional and so experienced and knew exactly what to do the second I put my dress on. Being only 4'11", I was concerned with how I was going to make this big dress fit my little body, but Ninel worked her magic. Each fitting was super fast, Ninel working efficiently each time to make sure that everything was perfect and done in time for pick up the week of the wedding. At the final fitting, there were a few little things that needed touching up (i had lost a little bit of weight between fittings) and she was able to get these little spots done within 30 minutes so I could still take the dress home that day. She was very attentive to what I wanted while being very vocal and honest about how to work with the material and style of my dress to make it work. Normally I'm suspicious of a full five-star rating on Yelp, but I had both a lovely and stress-free experience at Ninel's shop for my wedding dress alterations. I would recommend and trust her with any of my future alterations that need to be done and plan on returning in the fall with some other items. Because of my bare bones budget for my wedding dress, it was actually purchased from an online consignment store and so already had the bustle I wanted. Instead, the work I needed from her was building on existing alterations. I ended up paying about $156 including tax, which ended up including the hemming as well as adjusting the bustle. Ninel did a wonderful job! And I felt like the cost was fair, given that my dress has an overlay with lace and beading, which meant it wasn't a simple hemming job and the bustle was two layers. However, the original price she quoted was slightly under that and she tacked on a little extra because the bustle was more elaborate than she'd expected. Wouldn't have been an issue if she'd mentioned it upfront, but I would have liked to see better communication about the price increase. In total, I had four fittings - but you should probably be able to get your wedding dress done in three. For one of them, there was a bit of an incident where I had moved recently and couldn't find the shoes I was supposed to wear with my dress, so I had to reschedule last-minute. On the third fitting, Ninel had a mixup with updating her notes and hadn't made any alterations since the last time, but was very apologetic about the issue. Because she didn't charge me extra for the previous late reschedule, I called it even. I found it incredibly helpful that she walked me through how to bustle my dress and had me try it for myself, as I would have ended up following a tutorial on YouTube and making lots of mistakes. She also was able to make a great recommendation for a wedding dress cleaner that I will be using. To echo another Yelper, my constructive suggestions would be for her to invest some money into her shop and to update her system. The room where I tried on my dress for her only had one full-length mirror, and I would have liked to see the three-panel type that's typical of wedding dress boutiques so you can see from different angles without turning. The same fitting room I was in is also used for storage of dresses and other items that still need tailoring, so it felt more cluttered than it needed to be. She is also the sole employee of her shop, which means she greets people, handles the fitting, does the sewing, answers the phone, etc. With that expectation, you're not going to get the same kind of customer-oriented service that you would at a fancier boutique, but you're also paying a much more reasonable price at Ninel's. Obviously the ambiance is a much less important issue than the quality of Ninel's work, so in general this is more of an area of growth potential that I see. Note that early to mid-May is prom season, so she's typically very busy. Would highly recommend to steer clear, especially if your tailoring isn't time-sensitive. I will be coming back with a wool coat for her to tailor once the weather gets cooler! 4.5 stars read more

This review is looooong overdue. Ninel has literally worked miracles on multiple occasions for me. First, my wedding dress. I bought the dress for a great price but it needed a lot of work. Ninel was a perfectionist and did not rest until it laid perfectly in every place. I felt like she took the time and put in the effort that most people would just not do. And it showed - I got so many compliments that my dress "fit perfectly" and everything stayed in place for the entire day. She even mended my mother's veil, which I wanted to wear and was told by other tailors that it was beyond fixable. She had the dress and veil ready on time, didn't rush the fittings, and had expert advice on how to press it before the big day. I've brought other dresses to her, which she has handled with ease, but the latest miracle was when she was able to make a handmade sari, designed with my pre-pregnancy measurements, fit perfectly at 7 months pregnant. She strengthened and let out the delicate silk top, which actually broke on some of the other bridesmaids. She has you try on the clothes and pins them to your desired length in front of a wall mirror, giving suggestions for those... with less fashion knowledge. I recently dropped off a (will be cute) dress after she hems away an ugly ruffle bottom. I'm not familiar with seamstress pricing, but it's $12 to hem pants and takes about 1.5-2 weeks to do so. She made an appointment for my dress fitting very quickly and once I tried on the dress, she had recommended minor alterations which included making a bustle for the dress. She does fantastic work and was very thorough in explaining the changes she had made assuring that I was happy with the fit. At my final dress fitting, she even took the time to teach my friend how to bustle my dress and let her practice a couple of times. The dress came out beautifully and the service was exceptional.
