Woohoo, Garbage Science!…read more Public tours are offered Fridays and I would recommend it, even to people who aren't passionate about waste management. This facility is top notch and world renowned! Heck ya YEG! I took part of a VIP tour last Saturday as part of a Waste Reduction and Management course I am taking through the City of Edmonton called Master Composter Recylcler (also recommended if you are into that sort of thing!) We visited the tip floors, the Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility where your garbage gets transported and sorted into compostables, biofuel waste feed and landfill (booo). Next on the tour was the Material Recovery Facility where your blue bag recyclables get sorted and sold off to manufacturers. Lastly also visited the Composting facility (a rare gem internationally because of it's size!). They are on the final stages of commissioning their Waste to Biofuel plant where once running almost 90% of all waste will be diverted from going to the landfill. WOO! Lastly there is also the E-Waste facility and the Construction and Demolition facility. I suggest this tour for every single person any age, even if garbage isn't what you think about daily. It's so informational, the tour guides are awesome and really make garbage learning enjoyable. You will come out of the tour inspired to reduce your waste or know more about how waste is managed and what can and cannot go in your blue bins (important!). Here is the link to make it easier for you! Book your tour! : https://www.edmonton.ca/programs_services/garbage_waste/edmonton-waste-management-centre.aspx

I really enjoyed the tour we got of the Edmonton Waste Management Center of Excellence. While I had…read morepreviously been on a tour of the facility in the early 2000s, a lot has changed in the intervening time and so it was great to visit once again! Not only did I get some better waste management tips to follow with regard to my household waste, but I learned more in depth about how things are currently handled which was utterly lovely. Staff were really great to watch work, the technology seemed fascinating, and the educational staff who could answer our questions were really helpful. We asked a lot of questions. Maybe someday I'll get an even longer more in depth tour but for now I'm happy to have learned what I have, and I enjoyed the time I was able to spend here.
