All meals were prepared with extra attention toward my gluten allergy. On night one separate plates with home made gluten free Mac n cheese were brought to us when we were ready to sit. We didn't even have to ask, it was like they knew us for years!! When my partner and I, lost in the throws of romance and waterfront, got a hankering for a Classic French 75, this company, but specifically the two mentioned above, accommodated our every whim with a smile! They were politely masked, consciously distanced, and professional as can be! Though we only spent a few total hours in each other's company over three days, they learned our names, our tastes, and our personalities! When I visit again, Cleftstone Manor will be at the top of my list for lodging. It was an incredible experience. Will do again, and do recommend. She has great stories to tell, so please take advantage of chatting during breakfast if not busy. Food: Included in our stay was a BIG breakfast every single day. It was amazing. We had blueberry pancakes at Cleftstone one day, then I had them at a local restaurant another day. Cleftstone's blueberry pancakes were on another level. You get coffee, juice (orange or cranberry), a pastry, breakfast cobbler, and the main breakfast (usually carbs like pancakes or waffles, or egg meal like omelette or quiche). The food every morning is a big plus of staying at Cleftstone. We saved the pastries for later in the day it was so much food. Cleanliness: Room was very clean. It looks old school, antique themed, like an old mansion, but still very clean as if it's been meticulously kept up since the 1800's or something. Location: Great location. You could walk into Bar Harbor (advertised to be 15 min walk), but there's a lot of walking already in town, so we opted to drive in. Plus it's on a sort of busy road. Cost: It was similar cost to others in the area. I think it was a few dollars more, but again, you're getting a big breakfast every day as long as you choose it. You could go alternatively for out for breakfast and spend $20 each day. Overall: I've never been to a "bed and breakfast" type place before. Cleftstone makes it feel comfortable, private, and they are there for friendly chat when you want it. I will be considering them next time in up in Acadia or Bar Harbor!

They were super jealous of our cabin and we definitely cannot blame them! A few nights were super chilly and the heat really made the cabin so cozy. It was the most luxurious place I'd ever stayed! Tucked off the main street in Southwest Harbor, this is a quiet little spot with well maintained grounds and amazingly organized cabins. Top notch bed and pillows. It's about a twenty minute drive to Bar Harbor, but it's easy and quick once you get the feeling of the layout. The "office" has extra swimming towels, movies, and books about Acadia. It's really awesome how the owners, Tom and Vickie, care about their customers. A downside was barely seeing the owners! We went in during their office hours but didn't see them. We received an invoice, and I was sad to not chat within our 48 hours of staying there. The 10am check out also was pretty brutal. You also clean your own cabin, which is okay, but we made breakfast and tea- doing dishes while packing up and paying the expensive price before 10? That was not great. It's pricey here, but it's so luxurious and beautiful, it's worth the splurge.

Bottom Line: A guilded age mansion that gives a glimpse into the history of Bar Harbor and the…read moreearly 1900s. La Rochelle is a large, historical home overlooking Frenchman Bay. While it was once the 41-room summer cottage for the Bowdoin family today it serves as the headquarters of the the Bar Harbor Historical Society. The mansion is also a wedding venue. If, when visiting La Rochelle you are hoping to feel like you are stepping into a time machine to 1903, you'll need a lot of imagination. The mansion has been the home to various families and it has served several purposes since it was the Bowdoin's summer cottage. So, the physical structure is original but very little else is. Also, a lot of the rooms are closed and serve as private offices or storage for the Bar Harbor Historical Society. But, as a bonus, there is a lot of Bar Harbor history and artifacts displayed throughout. What I found most interesting about La Rochelle was the Flower Room including the placement of it. I can recall visiting mansions with a designated area of the kitchen or butler's pantry for assembling flower arrangements but I can't recall one that had a dedicated Flower Room. I also thought it was interesting that the Flower Room was placed adjacent to the main foyer instead of closer to where the servants would be working. La Rochelle is a wonderful piece of Bar Harbor and American history and I am grateful that the Bar Harbor Historical Society was able to purchase La Rochelle to preserve it for future generations. I also appreciate the very kind volunteers that work at the mansion. La Rochelle is am impressive site from West Street but it looks even more impressive from water, or so I imagine. We did not get to see the house from that view but based on pictures, you can really see the elevation of the home and the many chimneys. Before leaving La Rochelle we visited the gift shop which is full of pretty things. I was eyeing up some puzzles but due to very limited space in my suitcase I just purchased a few greeting cards. Overall we had a nice visit to La Rochelle and we were glad to support the Bar Harbor Historical Society.
