I'm very unhappy with my experience. At my first initial appointment, I got the classic X-Ray covered by insurance. The oral surgeon Dr. Gronbach came in to review it with me, and he told me there were visible nerves in the X-Ray and wanted to do a more extensive 3D X-ray to be sure the exact position of the nerves. This extra X-Ray was $322 not covered by insurance, and I agreed to it based off fear they would hit one of my nerves. After the 3D X-Ray, I never saw Dr Gronbach again, a young dental assistant came into my room and said "You're all good". It was very unsettling that I felt coerced into this 3D X-Ray and never even got the Doctor who ordered it to review the scan and confirm my nerves weren't in the way of my wisdom teeth. When it came to the day of the surgery, I saw Dr. Gronbach for the first time right before he was about to start my surgery and put me under. I brought up this issue and that I was concerned about paying $322 for an extra X-Ray when he would just send an assistant in to tell me "You're good". His exact response to me bringing this up was to turn to another assistant and say "Give her more gas". A few days after my surgery was complete, it became clear I had no feeling in about an inch of the back left side of my gum. I brought this up at my follow-up appointment, and Dr. Gronbach confirmed they "knicked the nerve", the same thing that this $322 3D X-Ray was supposed to prevent. I asked about the process to re-gain nerve feeling in the effected part of my gum, and he said verbatim that it will take awhile to grow back, and if it doesn't end up healing "I hope its not too annoying to live with". This response was not only unprofessional, it felt demeaning. I am a 24 year old at the appointments with no parental figure and was not taken seriously. And because of this I still have an inch of my gums feeling like the Novocain never wore off. This is incredibly disappointing not only in lack of awareness during surgery but also the fact that I felt I had to pay extra to avoid any nerve problems that happened anyway. I had a tooth extracted here. I arrived at 11:30, was done by 12:10 and out by 12:20. The whole team was friendly and helpful and when I got in the chair there were 3 people all getting things set up in parallel, letting me know what diodes were doing and what certain beeps meant. I felt they treated me with care and respect and did a very fine job keeping me calm (I have had bad experiences in a dentist's chair and was a little nervous). When I came-to, they wheeled me out to the car and gave me a care package containing a bunch of small things I might need or want: applesauce, tea, gauze, a mug, a printout of the post-extraction steps. Later that night I got a call from the dentist asking me how I was doing, and letting me know that they have a 24 hour line if I need anything or if I have any questions. I had one stitch from the procedure, but by the next day I didn't feel any discomfort or pain. I'm impressed. read more

I got some wisdom extracted here a few years ago. During my pre-op, he asked me if any of my friends had had their wisdom teeth out. When I told him that yes, some of them had, he asked me "so do you know if they were under completely or if it was just local anesthesia?" He asked it like he was legitimately trying to find out what he was supposed to do. Like it was his first time. It might well have been, because a week after surgery I was in the hospital with a dry socket, where they prescribed me elephant-grade antibiotics. Also, instead of giving me Vicodin, he gave me Percocet. Percocet is a hell of a drug, let me tell you. My jaw is still permanently fucked up. read more

Like most people my age, my wisdom teeth needed to be removed as 2 of them were impacted. After months of trying to find an oral surgeon, my mom and I stumbled upon Dr Gronbach. My daughter had her wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Gronbach several years ago. She had several problems after the surgery -- particularly pain and swelling in her lower jaw which required additional treatment. He placed antibiotic "tape" in the hole in her gum. He later had a very difficult time extracting the tape since the gum had started to grow over it, which caused additional pain. After about a month, she had more pain and swelling in the same area, even though the gum had completely healed. She saw several other ortho surgeons who took xrays and suggested that if she didn't get over the pain soon, they would suggest exploratory surgery to open up the cavity to see if there was tape residue or something which was causing the swelling. After taking several rounds of strong antibiotics, the swelling and pain finally subsided. read more

She sent me to Dr. Gronbach's office, a place I knew well, as both our daughters had their wisdom teeth out under Dr. Gronbach's care. Now unexpectedly it was my turn. I cracked my molar nearly in half yesterday while having lunch and mistakenly bit down on a small piece of bone. The pain was sharp, indescribable and nauseating. There was no way that I could go through the rest of the day with that tooth in my mouth! Thankfully my husband was there and he quickly called the oral surgeons around the area and Dr. Gronbach's office was able to fit me in that same afternoon to remove the tooth. We got to the office and the staff that greeted me were all very nice. They clearly understood that I was in severe pain. They were able to squeeze me in and I didn't have to wait very long to see Dr. Gronbach. After taking some x-rays, examining the tooth and asking me some questions, Dr. Gronbach proceeded with the surgery to remove the cracked molar. They offered me some laughing gas free of charge to help me relax probably because they felt sorry for me. Remember, I was in SEVERE pain. The procedure lasted longer than expected because the roots of the tooth were what they described as "torturous". The extraction wasn't cheap, but I didn't expect anything to be a bargain in the Lamorinda area. It wasn't unreasonable either so I was fine with it. I was impressed by how efficient the office was, how quickly they accommodated me, how friendly everyone was and I felt taken care of in an emergency situation. Dr. Gronbach took pictures of the tooth in addition to the x-rays and wanted to make sure that my primary dentist wouldn't think that he extracted the tooth for no good reason. Believe me, there was no way around it. I felt the crack with my tongue and it went way down beyond the gum line. Still, it was very thorough of him to make sure my dentist understood what had happened. It you are ever so unfortunate as to have a cracked tooth, call Dr. Gronbach's office. I got my four wisdom teeth taken out and I am 29 years old. Based on my age the surgery was not easy! I was a bit afraid before my surgery - but surgeon Keith Gronbach and his staff- answered all my questions and explained everything so patiently. The day of my surgery went so smoothly- they did an excellent job! No strong pain! Very minimum pain. I only took the Tylenol or Advil (can't remember which of the two) took it for a week mainly for the inflammation. Never needed the strong pain med! Recovery went well- tip: make sure to do the cold and hot presses on your face!! They do help the swelling to go away. About a month after my surgery, it was a Sunday THE FOURHT OF JULY (I was sure Dr. Gronbach was not going to see me until Tuesday -the day the clinic was going to open) I called Keith Gronbach - Bc I was afraid I had an infection - and he kindly offered to see me on that very same day!! A holiday!!, it ended up just being an irritation on that side -probably due to something I ate or wasn't cleaning well. Nothing serious ..but of course I was freaking out for nothing lol. I apologized for making him come into the office during a holiday-but he was so sweet and kind - he said it was fine and that he is glad it wasn't anything serious!
