This is long overdue! I have had two haircuts already with Amanda and I will be receiving my third in a few days! Suffice to say, both experiences were great! She has a lovely salon that has a really peaceful vibe. Each haircut begins with a consultation of my wants and concerns and I always feel like Amanda does a great job at listening and ensuring I know what's possible and that she's on the same page with me. The hairwash is my favorite part! She does a mini soundbath that's so relaxing!! The haircut itself is quick and it's easy to talk to Amanda while the time passes. I love that Amanda goes over and above to help educate clients on how to take care of their unique hair better! At the end of the cut, I always walk out with exactly what we discuss. It's magic!! Where do I even begin? I learned about Amanda from a friend who posted about her on social media a few years ago and immediately knew I had to come to the salon some day. I finally did, and I'm grateful beyond words for the experience. My hair is naturally wavy but I have never known what to do with it - how to maintain it or even how to keep my hair healthy and looking good without the use of products containing a bunch of chemicals. Amanda helped address that concern and so much more. The appointment started with Amanda asking about my hair goals. It was clear she was listening very intentionally and I felt she genuinely cared about everything I was saying. Before we dove into the cut, shampoo, etc. she even showed me the products she was going to use and invited me to read the ingredients to see if I was okay with it. I've never had any other stylist do this before. I often have felt my concerns about chemicals in hair products have been dismissed at other salons because it's just the norm to use products with a bunch of chemicals. My favorite part of this visit was the scalp detox. It wasn't just a quick 1- to 2-minute wash. It was an invitation to practice mindfulness, to relax, and practice gratitude. The wash felt so healing. It's hard to accurately describe this experience in words. I was ecstatic about how my hair turned out in the end. I'd never seen my hair look so healthy and hydrated, and I'd never seen my natural waves before. She didn't use any curlers or an iron. Just a texturizer, leave in conditioner and a blow dryer with a diffuser. My waves looked so great! (And to think I used to wish for straight, fine hair growing up because that was mostly what I saw on TV.) I was beaming so much when we were done because I was so happy with the result! In addition to the cut and wash, Amanda also helped me with a hair care routine that accommodated my desire for a minimalist approach. I appreciated this a lot because I've gone to other places that have insisted I need to do something a certain way, and I ended up doing nothing because it was too overwhelming or required too many steps/products I didn't want. I am still working on this new routine, but I feel optimistic and supported because Amanda met me where I'm at and didn't insist on doing things I wasn't ready for. I will say that part of the reason it took me over a year to come here is because the cost is more than I've ever spent at a salon. But still, I knew I was going to visit at some point, and I truly feel like it was worth every penny. I definitely plan on coming back. I came here for a hair ceremony on an August new moon and I am still reflecting on all that was released and everything that was called to be present. The sunrise ceremony began before I even started my drive there. Carefully picking up the items I was taking to be present on the altar. Driving there already noticing the rising sun, the words I was listening to on the radio and the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains greeting me. Amanda could not be more welcoming and gracious, preparing and sharing her space for the ceremony we were about to experience. The altar she prepared was a beautiful centerpiece as she guided energy, called upon our ancestors to be present and created a space for ceremony to happen. Her hands worked magic on my head, neck, face and shoulders and she helped open me up to receive the messages I was to receive. The literally held me, in the most loving of ways. The type of being held that is needed to feel safe to put down the walls, to sit in vulnerability and receive. The ancestors were there, the messages came and my spirit was shifted. After all this the haircut was great, she listened to my hair concerns and gave me just what I was looking for. All while sharing her beautiful voice and dope lyrics with me. Singing and rapping beautiful words of affirmation that lifted my spirit even further. I really do want more of that!!! This hair ceremony was more than I could have expected.
