It's not very often that a small business makes a comeback after being closed for a few years, but former downtown Halifax resident Kee Heong has brought its dim sum delights to a much different part of the city - Lower Sackville. My wife and I came by for a late-ish lunch on the the weekend, and we were happy to see the restaurant nearly full! It's not a big space, with only marginally more seating than their old location, but it was good to see it being embraced by a diverse clientele. The menu has a few dozen different options, which gave a good amount of variety without being overwhelming. Steamed BBQ pork buns are a dim sum must, as are pan fried pork and chive dumplings, and then we mixed things up a with a few new-to-us dishes. We settle on the steamed ginger dumplings, pan fried taro cakes and the more mysterious sounding "duck egg inside pork balls". It probably isn't the best way to pitch the dish in an appetizing way, but I like all those things, so it was worth a shot! It seems that green tea comes by default here, or our server has really good hearing as we debated getting some or not, so if it's not your thing, you might want to nip that in the bud. It wasn't long before our assortment of plates and steamer baskets were before us. The pan fried dumplings were a sight to behold with beautifully browned bottoms, and they did not disappoint! The crispy side of the wrapper contrasted nicely with tender and juicy interior, dotted with bits of vegetal chives. The dumplings were on the large side for pot stickers, and the grain of the filling was a bit more rustic than Chinese dumplings often are, including the others that we ordered, which we appreciated. Kee Heong's cha siu bao struck all of the right notes with pleasantly doughy and lightly sweet exteriors, and the sweet and savoury interior. There was just the right amount of sauce and filling to get a taste with each bite. The taro cakes were a new one for me, and they would be best described as being similar to a latke or hash brown, as it's another patty of shredded root vegetable. The exterior was good and crisp, although I found the interior to be a bit dry, and it was with these that the lack of sauces at the tables stood out. No soy, black vinegar or chili crisp in sight! The ginger dumplings had the perfect amount of ginger, such that they were quite gingery, but not enough to give you a burning sensation. It was a nice contrast amongst a series of very savoury dishes. Last but not least were the "duck egg inside pork balls". I vaguely knew what to expect, but not 100%, so this dish had an element of mystery to it! The vibe from the menu is very "Chinese Scotch egg", and the composition was in line with that as well, as steamed rice took the place of bread crumbs ensconcing a ball of minced pork. It seemed like it was just the egg yolk inside, but I really enjoyed the mix of egg, meat and rice, the latter of which had a subtle flavour of toasting, similar to the rice in a rice cooker that was on the edges of the pot. Kee Heong is firing on all cylinders since their return, and I hope Lower Sackville appreciates what they've got in this dim sum dispensary. read more

It would be easy to walk right past this humble little restaurant/bakery and not even know it. But don't be fooled by its low profile. It's a great little restaurant and a regular stop for my wife and I when we visit Halifax from our home in Lunenburg. Good service, good food and very authentic. Try it. You won't be disappointed. Went to Kee Heong for Dim Sum last Sunday. the dim sum pieces we selected (har gow, siu mai, shrimp buns, black pepper steamed pork ribs, black bean and garlic steamed pork ribs, pan fried pork buns, nori wrapped pork rolls, lotus wrapped sticky rice (needed a little more seasoning though) and pan fried rice cakes was sooo good. We ate so much and couldn't eat any more so we did take out of their sweets. A small Chinese bakery tucked in the basement of the Freemason's building. Went there for dim sum and it was surprisingly good and priced decently for Halifax (most plates were a bit under four dollars with four pieces). Family run joint and the dim sum takes a little while but comes out hot. You can also have stuff from the bakery which is fresh and made each day. I love this place! Friendly staff, and great deals. The food is fresh and very tasty. It has all the usual suspects from Pork buns to tarts and some I had never tried before (coconut something or other). I have been to a few Chinese bakeries in San Francisco and Toronto, and while Kee Heong isn't quite at that level it definitely has the potential and they are headed in the right direction. Cost: A couple of bucks per piece, and they have deals for certain times of day like by 2 buns get one free, etc. Location: Super convenient for those who park in the Metro Park, why not grab a few sweets on the way home! read more

Went here for the first time today, and it didn't disappoint. It's a small and quiet little eat in/takeout place. The lady working there was very nice! I had the Steamed mixed pork balls, and the pork with cilantro dumplings! Very good and filling. I highly recommend trying this place, great food and you can't beat the prices. read more

What is with the low ratings? The food and prices are solid! Authentic dimsum for $4 and under each. I love pork buns and they did good on those though their dumplings might be better....gasp! Maybe it's the brisk Atlantic wind coming over the Maritimes this afternoon, but I was in the mood for something steamed and Kee Heong did not disappoint! I enjoyed pork in cilantro dumplings, shrimp in chive dumplings and steamed buns filled with BBQ pork. All the ingredients seemed very fresh and the preparation was very efficient. I made the point of popping by here this afternoon. Blame my humungous case of winter hibernation for not checking it out sooner. Nestled into the very end of Granville I sense Kee Heong is a hidden gem for many. Let me tell you that you should likely pop in and give er a taste. I asked the server what her favourite thing was and she said everything. So that didn't really help me out but I have an inkling she's right. I finally settled on the bbq pork bun. I was sort of unsure about having meat all up in my bun but once you get past that part, you'll relish the true tastiness of it. I'm talking messy flakes all over my face, pants and desk. I'm talking savoury and sweet at the same time. I'm talking unique and delish. And cheap to boot!!! My bun was only $1.60 + tax. read more

Wandered in here after reading a review in the coast. It was clean and the staff were helpful at the counter. The selection was varied and prices seemed reasonable for a specialty bakery. About $1.80 for most buns, tarts and rolls. I have not tried my pork bun yet, but I'm sure it will be a tasty. read more

Every time I come here, it seems like I need to get there when the first open. I came here around 530 to get some of the breads. They're only 1.80 each. We picked up the rest of the stock. I asked if she was baking anymore, and she said no. They closed around 9 I believe. So why is it, that they wouldn't bake anymore? That aside, the cost is cheap and the dim sum looks amazing. She interior is lit to make it look more inviting and open. The clerks don't speak much English at all, and barely understand it as well. They still tried their best for us, and for that I love them. They don't use peanuts in any of the breads, for anyone with an allergy. Will always come back here. read more

Kee Heongs Cantonese Bakery is a great place to go for lunch or dessert! The restaurant features many different pastries such as red bean bun, chocolate egg rolls, egg tart, and lots more. The red bean bun was delicious. I've never had red bean before, but after trying this I really like it! The chocolate egg rolls weren't available at the time I went, so I didn't get to try them, but they sound extremely yummy! I wasn't a fan of the egg tart, though. It just tasted kinda weird and had a milky type substance.. Mostly it was the taste that bothered me though. Even though I didn't try many of the baked goods, I'm sure I'll be back again soon! The dim sun was pretty good too. I wasn't the one ordering, but we got steamed pork buns, a pork type patty, two plates of dim sum, and some type of meat in strips. The steam buns were really good. They had very good flavour and just tasted really good. The pork type patty (don't know the name) was really good too. Some might be scared to try it, but it's really good. It tastes like meat, pretty much, but also with a nice flavour. The dim sum was yummy too. I don't really know which ones we got, but ill assume they all taste the same. They weren't actually delicious, but they were pretty good. I'm pretty it was just my taste buds though. I didn't try the meat strips, haha I was scared they were liver or something along the lines of that. Anyways, the food was good, with a clear, easy to understand menu. The place wasn't too great. I mean, that isn't really the main point of a restaurant, as in you go there to eat. But, I still felt a bit uncomfortable there. The room in all yellow, yello walls, yellow floor, and yellow ceilings. The chairs and tables are kinda like wood, not the most comfortable, but I can deal with that. Lastly, it was really hot in the restaurant. I don't know why, but it wasn't even sunny out, and I'm pretty sure there was air conditioning on. Anyways, the main part of a restaurant is the food, and as long as its clean and pristine, I don't really care. I really liked Kee Heongs, but if you see me there again, I'll probably be there for the bakery, not the dim sum. Took the kids down for a new dim sum destination and the food was just great. Very casual kind of diner atmosphere, so not exactly a date night kind of place or anything, but a great addition to the (far too small :-) ) Halifax dim sum scene! read more

Two facts about me: I'm Asian. And I'm from Vancouver. Ah yes, that makes me kind of an expert on Cantonese bakeries. A Cantonese bakery whiz if you will. (Haha, I'm just joking.) Seriously though, I've had my fair share of bbq pork buns and egg tarts. I stopped by with a friend for a snack and coffee. The décor is very simple. And the Chinese pop music is bumpin'. We got a red bean bun and a bo lo bun. Both were heated up in the microwave for us, and very soft and fresh. Bo lo in Cantonese means pineapple. From what I gather, I don't think the bun is actually supposed to be pineapple flavoured. But it's probably named that because the top of the bun kind of looks like a pineapple (it's hard to explain. Check out my pic for a more visual explanation). I liked the bo lo bun all right. There was a custard inside, which I've never encountered in a bo lo bun before. But hey, it tasted all right. Most of the buns/tarts are $1.80, which is actually pretty steep. Most Cantonese bakeries I've been to charge 50-80 cents for buns. But then again, it's the only Cantonese bakery to open up in the city, so it's understandable. Overall, it was a nice reminder of home. But I won't be racing to go back. read more

This place is so small and it seems like not a lot of people know where/what it is but I try to tell as many people as I can how incredible this place is. The steamed dumplings are cheap (~$4 for 4 dumplings) and fresh. They come out in tiny bamboo steamers, which I love. Usually I'll go in, have green tea with two or three dumpling orders (~9-12 dumplings) and eat my fill. You wouldn't ever really see it unless you were looking for it as it is right across from Jet Sushi and down the street from MEC. They don't have Wifi which is okay because it makes it the perfect little date spot without any distractions. They shrimp and leek dumplings are AMAZING** read more

This is a wonderful little place with amazingly good baked goods. It is in the basement of a corner building at Granville and Salter Streets The name says it is a bakery so that is what drew us here the first time and we left with great Chinese baked and steamed buns etc. The Dim Sum called us back and we are so glad it did. This is in my opinion the best Dim Sum in HRM. Hands down! I love tripe and try it at every dim sum spot as a barometer of their abilities. Most places serve beef tripe but Kee Heong serves a Spicy Pork Tripe that is the clear winner. All Dim Sum is cooked fresh to order after you fill out your requests, unlike the cart style dim sum places. There is only about 6 tables so it does not hold a huge crowd but this also makes it quiet and cosy. Highly recommended! read more

From what I gather, the only Cantonese bakery in Halifax. It does not disappoint. I spent my youth eating this stuff. The selection of bakery items is pretty standard, with the exception of cocktail buns being absent (that might change). The prices are very reasonable and all the pastries are made in house, and taste spot on. The egg tarts and milk tarts are a must! The dim sum is made in house and very good, but can be a bit on the pricier side. Owners and staff are very friendly, but there are some language barriers. So don't expect a long conversation with the owners and staff in english, but that can be a good reason for one to learn some Cantonese or Mandarin! read more

The closest place to Dalhousie University I could find to get my dim sum fix in. The food is good but I love the atmosphere of the place. While this small bakery may seem unspectacular to some, it's these types of places that remind me of the places I've gone to since I was a kid. The cost is fair but is somewhat limiting for someone who would like to sample a lot of different food at a low cost. Probably best to go with a group of people like most dim sum places. read more

The closest to authentic chinese food as it gets for Halifax. I miss Asia and this place reminds me of it. The food is good. The dimsum is decent, I would much rather recommend the different breads they have. The pastries are so-so, but the variety of items they have in addition to the low cost of it all warrants multiple visits. I would definitely return again and recommend this place to others. read more
