Ke'e Beach is the location that my bf and I would head to if we were not at the St. Regis each evening to watch the sunset into the ocean. STUNNING!!! This is my favorite beach in all of Kauai! The water is so blue and clear! You can swim here or snorkel. They do have lifeguards here in a tower. The parking is not great so I recommend getting there early. There are tons of chickens everywhere but they were pretty harmless until you took out some food and suddenly you are surrounded by them begging. The view of the Na Poli cliffs is amazing here as well. There are hiking trails nearby that are not for the beginner with amazing views down on the beach. Great way to spend the day after the long hike or for a beach day! read more

Ke'e beach is great! This north shore beach is located at the end of the road. There's snorkeling, hiking, sunbathing, and swimming. When my wife and I went to Ke'e beach in early December 2008, a storm had hit the island and the waves got pretty big. Because of this, the lifeguard at Ke'e was not letting anyone in the water to snorkel. What a bummer since we drove about 45 minutes to get to Ke'e to go snorkeling. We did however get to take a quick dip in the water and even saw a monk seal sunbathing on the beach. My wife thinks it was dead because it never moved, lol. Adjacent to the beach is a couple of hiking trails that lead to breathtaking views of the northern coast. The hike is somewhat of an easy hike, and around almost every turn was a breath taking view of Ke'e and/or the ocean. The beach and the views from the trails were well worth the drive! If needed, I would be willing to drive several times around the island to get there. As always, there were roosters at the beach. This just may be my favorite beach ever. This beach is impossible to miss, you drive north on Highway 560 until you hit a dead end, and you will see a lifeguard tower and turnabout. Yup, you reached KE'E BEACH! Parking is horrible here because (1) they don't have that many spots; and (2) this is also the beginning of the HANAKAPAI TRAIL. If the parking on the paved road is full, try turning around to the caves, there's a huge muddy area that you can attempt to park, but please make sure you vehicle don't get stuck in the mud. There's no food or snorkel rental available at this beach, so make sure you grab whatever you need before coming here. Would highly recommend bringing some insect repellent because I was feeding an army of mosquito when I was hiding in the shade and washing myself off. NOTE: I know this is a public beach, and some of you might be awed by the beautiful view, but be respectful to those that's actually napping and trying to get a tan under the sun. The water here is soo clear - someone mentioned that it was the color of Windex and I'm inclined to agree. I loved all the north shore beaches, especially Ke'e and Tunnels. These two beaches have the best snorkeling spots on the island. There are also trees around so if it gets too hot, you can always rest in the shade. However, it is a looong drive to get here if you're staying at the South side of the island - it took us 1.5-2 hours to drive here. Sometimes parking is hard to find, and the beach does get crowded. There are lifeguards present though, so you should be in good hands should anything happen. read more

Probably our favorite beach in Kauai, and let me say this if you are even remotely considering going: Do NOT be an idiot and go snorkel there AND STAND ON THE REEF. Read the signs- standing on the reef hurts it and damages the ecosystem. Again, don't be an idiot mainland tourist. Ok, I feel better now. This was some of the best snorkeling we did, second only to the waters off the coast of Niihau. We saw an incredible variety of fish and other life, including about 5-8 turtles. It is not the easiest entrance back into the reef once you're on the outside of it, if the water is rough/tide is low, but if you are patient and careful, it's doable. One other note- if you want to enjoy hours of snorkeling, get there early- like 8am or earlier early. Parking is scarce! read more

Drive to Ke'e to go on the Hanapalai trail to go to the beach. Once you hike back the 4 miles round trip to the hidden beach, it's great to go into Ke'e and swim a little bit to cool off. It's quite a small opening, and not the most beautiful beach. Parking is tough if you get there later than 8:30am I would say, because everyone is trying to do the hike. It's a pretty calm beach, but very touristy. If you're not planning to go on the hike, I would pass on this. read more

Let me clear something up for everyone. Hawai'i is NOT AN AMUSEMENT PARK. Do not travel here and complain when the state is regulating beaches and crowd-controlling as they see fit. Do not complain when you can't find a parking space or see that a beach is charging you because you aren't a local. Have you seen a map? These islands are TINY and cannot accommodate thousands of tourists swamping up the streets and beaches. Be patient. Be kind. Follow the rules, do not trespass, and you know what? These islands are their home, not a disneyland for you to run amuck. Remember how fed up they must be with disrespectful tourists trashing their home and being rude when beaches charge money and control numbers. If you are to come to Hawai'i, remember it is not the mainland. It is not America, it is its own culture, people, and climate. It may technically be the 50th state, but that means nothing if you continue to treat these islands like an amusement park with attractions you get to gawk at. How many local Hawaiians come to your neighborhood and clog the roads and trash your favorite parks? Then whine when things cost money and gas is $7 a gallon? NONE. This is probably the most beautiful beach on Kauai, or most other places I have seen - mainly due to the foliage surrounding it. It looks like a movie set, which I'm sure it has been, many times over. The parking, however, is the worst of any beach. After waiting quite a while for a spot to open up, I ended up with bright purple berry stains all over the car from bird droppings, and someone keyed the side of the rental vehicle. The beach also has many prickly things from the trees in the sand, making walking barefoot difficult. There was a sign up stating "No Swimming" in the middle of the beach, however there were some people in the water. There was also a seal sleeping in the sand on the beach. This beach is definitely worth seeing for it's beauty. But, the length of time it takes to drive to it, the poor parking situation, the fact that they were telling people not to swim there... leads me to not want to venture up to it again during my 2 week stay. read more

Great beach but as I read the other reviews... I'm wondering if we came at a different time for snorkeling? We were here last October and came here after we hiked the Kalalau Trail for a few hours. We wanted to cool off from the great exercise and just be able to soak in another beach on Kauai too. But I distinctly remember that the lifeguards were really strict about NO SNORKELING. They even blasted through their megaphone several times when there were snorkelers in their gear in the water. How odd. Anyway, regardless of the no snorkeling situation, we really liked that we could relax on this beach after a tiring hike to cool off. The water felt amazing, it wasn't too cold so that was nice. The water was very clear and everyone seemed to be enjoying it as much as we did. We didn't stay too long because it was getting dark. Parking is pretty difficult in this area especially because of the popular hiking trail but you'll manage to find a spot somewhere and walk to this beach. read more

Just when I thought we were lost on the road and had nowhere to go but to turn back.. we arrived here.. at Ke'e Beach.. and just fell in love with Kauai all over again. My girlfriend and I were driving around in the gloomy North Shore weather looking for the perfect spot to watch the sunset. Once we hit this beach, the sun miraculously appeared and the view was AMAZING. It was late afternoon/early evening so the sun was mildly setting.. and it created the perfect backdrop for two silly California girls to have a beachy photoshoot! :) The water here is unbelievably CLEAR. I could wade in the ocean neck deep and still see my toes! Seriously, I've never seen such clear water at a beach before.. Swimming here felt like something out of a dream or a movie.. The atmosphere made me feel like I was in another part of the world, another country, another ocean.. something exotic and sensual.. something unlike the other beaches on Kauai. We went on August and this was the first stop. We arrived at 8am and tons of parking spots left. You would need to go online and reserve for entry in this state park. Everyone that was parking seems to go for hiking. You need to walk About 5 mins to get to the beach from the parking. When we got to the beach there we signs that says no swimming. The waves are pretty rough. Not suitable for kids. My family ended up going over to Haena and walking about 5 minutes to Tunnels beach where the waves are calmer. read more

You drive until you feel like you've reached the end of the world...and then you join the throngs of other people who've done the same in order to enjoy the delicious Ke'e Beach. Yup, parking is a joke. Tiny parking lot right at the beach, bigger remote parking lot about a quarter mile back past the wet caves. After that people resort to inventiveness. Yup, it gets crowded. Get there early for a primo spot on the sand. We like to go all the way down the beach towards Cannons where it's *slightly* less populated. Yup, you can SWIM WITH THE SEA TURTLES! They make me feel like a little kid, because I get all giddy when I see them and can't stop grinning. And then I pretend I'm Ariel and twirl with the cute creatures in the ocean. Don't laugh, that movie was seminal to my youth. Just don't be a douche and touch them. Yup, you can do some of the best snorkeling on Kaua'i. Again, please don't be a monkey and touch the coral. It's the perfect spot for setting up shop in glorious weather and enjoying the relatively calm ocean swimming (because of the protective reef). And it's the perfect spot to peel off your constrictive hiking boots in order to plunge into the refreshing Pacific once you've finished the Kalalau-gruel. read more

This beach is literally the end of the road as there is no further travel available unless you want to swim or hike. This beach also has showers!!! The parking gods smiled upon us today - it's a Sunday and we arrived here at noon-ish, and we scored a spot just steps from the beach! Ok, we really should thank the couple that were leaving, who motioned for us to take their spot - instead of the gods, heehee. Snorkeling around was easy, as strong waves broke beyond the reef, creating a protected little area. We saw a bunch of tropical fish - yay! - and staked out a piece of shaded area underneath a big tree. One of the wild chickens brought her little fuzzy chicks by to see if we had food for them, so cute! After we were snorkeled out, we showered at their bathroom area, put our stuff in the car and hiked 2-miles of the Kalaulau Trail to Hanakapiai Beach. The trailhead is right in this parking lot, so it's super convenient! During our trip, we went to Polihale Beach, the furthest point on one side, and then to this beach, the furthest point at the other end. I loved them both - so yes, I'd definitely come back to this beach again! read more

At the end of Highway 560 is the beautiful Ke'e Beach. Definitely our favorite beach in Kauai for many reasons: - Not as busy or crowded as other more popular beaches like Poipu or Hanalei. - The Beach is protected by a reef, creating clean and calm water. - Perched right at the beginning of the scenic Na Pali Coast. Good to know: - Watch out for mosquitos in the shade and chickens... well, everywhere. If you're eating lunch, they WILL congregate. And don't think you're safe with that chicken katsu bento... this beach has got cannibal chickens! - Parking is rough. The parking lot is VERY small and fills up with hikers hitting the Kalalau trail early in the morning. We took one of the last spots before 9am during the holidays. We saw a bigger overflow lot not too far back from the beach lot. We didn't go snorkeling because it was closed due to the high surf, but we heard it's really great when the surf allows it. If we're ever back on the island, we're definitely coming back! read more

If you want to float in crystal blue water at the base of a jungle, nap to the sound of waves hitting the reef, snorkel and then sun yourself dry while sipping on a fresh young coconut and visiting with the local wild chickens, this is it, folks. Ke'e is pretty much the best and most versatile beach on the North side of Kauai that can be accessed without any hiking (follow the Kalalau trail to more remote beaches if that's feasible and desirable for you). The huge trees with exposed roots at the edge of the beach provide shade when you need it, and they are great for photo opportunities. The lifeguards patrol the beach on ATVs and where the reef protects the beach the surf does not seem to be a problem. Other stretches of beach, where there is no reef, can be much more dangerous. The parking lot is harsh as others have said, but we were able to park a large rental car here with no issues on a perfect beach day. Just drive to the end of 560 after Hanalei Bay. You can't, and shouldn't, miss it. read more

THE BEST BEACH.... EVER... and we haven't even been there for sunset yet like a lot of these other reviews. We woke up at the crack of dawn (for us... 7AM), and rushed to get ready to head to Ke'e. It's true... if you're late, be prepared to walk. We arrived at 9:30AM and there was absolutely no parking in the main parking lot by the beach. The overflow lot about 1/4 mile down the road was empty though. Don't bother parking along the road; you will get a ticket. We saw 7 cars with big fat tickets on them on our way home. If you're a little late like we were, drive right up to the lifeguard tower, drop off all your stuff along with your passengers, and drive back to the overflow lot to park. Do the same when you leave and you'll be golden. Best way to review this place is a list of reasons why this beach is so great. 1. SUPER CLEAR water. See all those photos of the clear water? It's hard to capture how clear it is but people are trying to show you how awesome it is. Someone said you can see your feet with the water being chest high. YOU CAN! It's a truly amazing thing. 2. BEAUTIFUL surroundings. Beautiful sandy beach with the beginnings of the Na Pali cliffs to your left and endless beach and ocean to your right. 3. INCREDIBLE INCREDIBLE snorkeling. Because the water is so clear, you will find so much life around you even looking from outside the water. The currents here are STRONG even within the reef protected areas. Be safe when snorkeling and snorkeling in pairs. 4. BARELY OCCUPIED! The beach isn't really secluded, but you won't find huge crowds here. Most of the cars here are there to hike the Kalalau Trail and most beach goers will eventually leave to go hike the trail. The only true everlasting occupants here are the roosters! :P 5. LIFEGUARD on duty. Some feel this sucks, but I truly value it. They keep a good eye on all snorkelers and swimmers. We heard them issuing a warning to a couple that was venturing far out to the point where they were have trouble with the strong under currents. These guys are there to keep you safe while you have a great time. I LOVE this beach. If you do not visit Ke'e Beach during your Kaua'i visit, you've missed one of the best things that Kaua'i has to offer. You must visit Ke'e Beach, or you will regret it!! read more

I can't give 5 stars to every beach and this was a good one but there were some aspects of it that made it less likable than the others. The good: there was some interesting snorkeling - we saw sea cucumbers, a large variety of different fish, something that looked very much like an eel, and some really fun big fish with googly eyes. The water was very calm and pool-like. Some guy was yelling he saw an octopus but by the time I swam all the way over there it was gone. Darn! That would have been awesome. The beach is at the start of the Napalii Coast trail so looking up and squinting into the cliffs above you can spot hikers. Lots of chickens on the beach which can be a positive or negative. This was a positive for me! The bad: The trees that overhang the beach litter these little prickly things that hurt your feet. The pricklies magically spread out and seem to cover the entire beach except for right on the water. It was unpleasant walking around with bare feet. The snorkeling reef was very spread out and it took a long time swimming to where there are fish. The water was somewhat cloudy and hard to see and it did not get very deep. The lifeguard yelled at people over a megaphone who were going out too far. Parking was far far away. The bathrooms are disgusting and huge lines form for the women's room. With so much action going on right at that spot they need more stalls. OH and bug bites. For some reason mosquitoes like to hang out here and this is the only place where I was bitten. And crowded. Tunnels is a short distance away and is the best! But I don't regret coming here - its a nice beach with snorkeling, good views, and calmer water for the younger crowd. read more

Of the 3 beaches I visited today (Hideaway, Tunnels, & Ke'e), this one was my favorite! The water is shallow right off the shore, perfect for wading & swimming, then a few feet out you have the reef, which provide shelter from the waves, making the waters nice & calm. Not to mention perfect for snorkeling. This reef definitely had the most variety of fish, although the density of sea life was not particularly high. I think the reef just isn't as healthy as it could be, possibly due to idiots who think it's ok to walk all over it. Jerks, how would you like it if I trampled all over your head?! The best part about Ke'e is the scenic backdrop - tall, lush green mountains adjacent to the shore. It really reminded me of Ipanema, Brazil (one of my favorite places ever) so I automatically loved it. We even saw a sleeping monk seal on the sand! There's also clean restrooms & a fresh water rinsing area, as well as a lifeguard on duty, so it's a pretty nice place to be! Getting there is pretty easy (the pin on the Yelp map is incorrect). Just take the 560 all the way to the end, then bam, you're at the parking lot. If you see more highway ahead of you, that means you haven't gone far enough, you have to pass Tunnels Beach & then keep driving for about another 10 minutes. The parking lot is a decent size but given the popularity of this beach (& it's also the trail head for the hike to the Na Pali coast) the spots get taken up quick & early. Not to fear though, because there is an overflow lot back along the highway, also a rocky dirt lot, & this one holds probably about 30-40 cars. I also saw people parking along the shoulder of the highway, though I'm not sure this is legal. This beach is definitely not to be missed! read more

Depending on when you get here, parking can be anywhere from a piece of cake (in one of two dirt lots) or impossible. Because the Kalalau trailhead is here, as well as a stunning beach, you're competing with a lot of tourists. This beautiful beach has both a small relatively calm snorkeling area and lots of waves...subject to closure when they get too threatening (I've heard only the tourists pay attention to the signs). The beach starts just as you enter from the parking lot and curves around the water, narrow and long. Behind you is a small "forest" filled with pine trees and to the left is the consummate Kauai tree-covered ridge. In the afternoon, the beach is pretty shaded...so get here early for the rays. If you're in the mood for a walk, head down the beach and follow the curve to the right toward nearly deserted beaches for total peace & quiet...and, keep an eye on the water. Maybe you'll get as lucky as I did and have the opportunity to swim with sea turtles! Being all the way at the tip of North Shore, I was incredibly grateful for the snack truck in the parking lot...tropical smoothies, local dried fruit and nuts, cold coconuts, shave ice, and more. My favorite beach in all of Kaui! This is great for swimmers and non-swimmers alike to explore especially when the water is like glass (a great time to snorkel). It is so beautiful here. There is a lifeguard stationed here. Parking is not the best so arrive early if you can. This beach really is the end of the island for the Kuhio highway. It can be really beautiful if the weather cooperates, but you are in a VERY wet area, so expect to get wet from more places than the ocean if you plan on being there all day. On sunny days, the color of the water is breathtaking, and the reef keeps out most of the stronger waves so this can be a great place to swim. Some people like to snorkel here, and it can be OK in clear water, but there is better snorkeling up the road at Tunnels Beach (just to the east of Ha'ena Beach Park) The real reason this beach doesn't get a better review is the location. Because it is the end of the line, and everyone thinks it is the best beach in the world, and the fact that it is the entry point for the famed Kalalau trail, there is never a place to park. Tourists (and locals) also seem to think that any square foot of land not occupied by a person, tree, or mountain is a parking spot, and that can make for an annoying experience. If it a sunny day, expect to be delayed up to a half an hour trying to get in AND trying to get out of the lot because there is only one entry/exit point: the road itself. There are a few small lots along the road within walking distance, but these also fill up very quickly. Most people will park on the road and walk in, which is also annoying because there is no shoulder so you are playing Frogger with dozens of tourists and exhausted hikers. Expect to see a lot of hitch hikers here going to and from the trails. Most are safe enough.. use good judgement here! But be careful, you may end up having to pay for a massive mud stain in the back seat of your rental car. Go ahead, drive here to say you did, but there are plenty of other beaches that are more easily accessible. If you do make it to Ke'e, make sure to check out the caves across the road and the "Blue Room" which is a small cave a 1/4 mile back from Ke'e. All you can see from the road is a path that looks like it used to be paved heading up into the hills. It is a 5 minute hike to the cave where some of Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed. You used to be able to swim to the back room of the cave which was illuminated blue, but it doesn't have the same effect that it used to, and there are "no swimming" signs due to the lepto bacteria in the fresh water systems of the island. read more

When in Kauai, you must visit this spot. Go early, around 5pm (yes, in the dark) and watch the colors in the sky change as the sun comes up. It's spectacular. Then hike the Kalalau Trail that starts right at the beach and follows the coast. A mile or two up, you will get to another trail that you can take up to Hanakapi'ai Falls. The water's freezing but worth it. Swim out under the falling water. You might consider not doing it, but do it anyway...it will be so worth it. From the beach, to the trail that goes up to the falls is about 1 1/2 miles (I think) and then about that up to the falls. The entire hike is only a few miles long, but it will take you longer than you think because of the ups and downs and because the path hugs the cliffs winding in and out along the coast. Plan on 1/2 day for this...or more. Another great hike is going along the cliffs from the top (starting up at the canyon). To get there you need to go around the island and drive up the mountains from the south side. read more

Lovely Windex colored water, ideal for snorkeling. Plenty of shade areas and full sun to spread your blankie and soak in the rays of the beating sun. Lifeguards are there on their ATVs to monitor the beach. The beach front has a mix of long smooth rock and sand so be careful as you head out. Waves can be overpowering at times so expect the lifeguard to give you warning to stop your snorkeling adventures. Parking could be tough but worth it! There are facilities by the parking lot and also a shower to rinse off the sand prior to your departure. One of the better beaches on the island. read more

The last beach on the North side. The parking here is very limited since this is also where the trail starts for one of the most popular hikes. The beach is nice and perfect for snorkeling. The Napali coast forms a nice shallow lagoon for soaking and chasing fish. This is one of our favorite beaches that we just go again and again. It's quiet with not too many people. Nice smaller beach at the trailhead of the Kalalua trail. The beach is in a bay so there aren't big waves - just soft and gentle ones. There are life guards on duty! Be ware though - the current can be strong. My husband would just lay back in the water and get carried towards the other side of the beach - but nothing in manageable. Some people are snorkeling. This is a great place to splash about after hiking the Kalalau - you'll be muddy and sweaty and the cool water is so refreshing! A few steps from the beach is a rinse area and rest rooms. To get there, basically drive north on the 560 or Kuhio highway. This beach is located at the very end. You can't miss it - seriously. There are a few nice caverns off to the side to check out on your walk back to the parking lot. Great place to relax and have a snack/picnic! read more

Ke'e beach is at the end of the highway on the North Shore, so if you're exploring the North Shore, this is obviously the turn-around point. There's a nice reef and lifeguards. There's a ton of people here and little parking, hence the rating. Get the first spot you see. This is also the start to the Kalalau trail, but unfortunately in Dec 2012 when we were there, they actually CLOSED OFF the entire Na Pali coast to search for some suspect. If you're reading this review in early 2013 and want to hike, check to see if it's actually open. If you head back about 100 yards, there's some caves that you can walk into. Pretty neat stuff. My favorite beach on Kauai. The beach is surrounded by lush, tropical foliage. There is a hike behind the beach (I didn't try the hike, but it's supposed to be beautiful). There are restrooms and showers. Great snorkel spot. There is a reef, so the beach is safe and protected and has a lot of fish. Just be really careful about getting too close to the outer edge of the reef, following that interesting fish -- you don't want to get snatched up by a rip tide out in the open water. The drive there passes two caves. They make for a nice photo op. Not interesting enough to visit on their own, but might as well check it out on your way to or from the beach. read more

Ke'e beach is absolutely amazing and a great spot for folks who aren't strong swimmers. Sadly, the beauty of Ke'e is known by pretty much everyone and can become quite crowded. Parking is a joke unless you're there super early. There's shade for the sun-phobic and plenty of sandy beach for the worshipers. Awesome snorkeling spot with the occasional visit from my buddy Honu (the sea turtle). PLEASE clean up after yourself when you leave. Nothing worse than a sloppy tourist littering this beautiful island!! read more

Favorite beach in Kauai!! I loved this beach because of the gorgeous back ground of mountains and trees. This beach has a protective reef for snorkeling, and this awesome pool shaped area with blue, see through water with tons of tropical fish and sand. This is the beach where we snorkeled with at least 8 turtles (we lost count)!! they were so close to us, we could touch them, but of course you are not supposed to do this. They were right outside the protective reef, so be careful when snorkeling out there, especially if the water is rough the day you go. Whatever you do, dont be an idiot and walk on the reef!!! It kills it. People will judge you and yell at you. This place was FULL of kids due to the shallow pool. Get here early because parking is a pain. We made the mistake of getting there late so we all got out and my dad had to drive a ways a way to find a parking spot. Thanks dad! Over all, this was definitely my favorite and most memorable beach. I loved experiencing the turtles and tropical fish while snorkeling. This is also the beach that is next to that big hike. We didnt do the hike. read more

This is my favorite beach on Kauai. I just love it! The Napoli coast, pretty trees and clear water is amazing. This time we watched the sunset from Kee and it was beautiful. Wish I would have spent more time here on my trip. read more

This was the best snorkeling beach on Kauai. There were a lot of fish and the reef area has both shallow and deep parts. I didn't see any sea turtles but some other snorkelers did. You have to be a strong swimmer to go out to the end of the reef - it takes a lot of energy swimming in deep water to get there and back. I saw the most fish in the shallow part, so you're not missing out by sticking close to shore. Parking can be a challenge, and there are several one-lane bridges on the way to the beach. Prepare to wait 5-10 minutes for a parking spot if you aren't there early. One of the nice things about the beach is it's also where you park for the Kalalau trailhead, so you can combine hiking and snorkeling in one day. read more
