This beach is tucked away down a mini steep hike by 1 Hanalei Bay Resort. It's right outside the property and the trail head is at the back of their valet parking, before the gate guard. There are rope handles to help guide you as you go down. The beach itself is gorgeous and has ample shade under a massive spread out tree. It's perfect for snorkeling with honu (sea turtles) and plenty of fish. The water is calm and great for kids if they make the trek down. It takes about 5-10 minutes depending on your speed. The only downfall is the parking. There are 10 spots in the public lot. You cannot park anywhere else in the surrounding lots, nor can you valet at the hotel for this particular beach. Your other option is the golf course lot about a mile down the road. read more

Thank gawd for the ropes or I definitely would have wiped out going down and coming back up. The mini hike was well worth the view and the snorkeling experience I got (including with sea turtles!). This was our favorite beach on Kauai. Definitely bring a snorkel mask, or at least goggles. Bring water and snacks too, because you may find you love it so much that you want to stay for a good long while. The GREAT: + We got to swim with sea turtles! At one point there were about 4-5 sea turtles near us, all within maybe 20 feet of the beach. They didn't mind that we were there watching them. Such gentle and magnificent creatures. + There is shade on the beach due to large trees + It was beautiful + It wasn't that crowded (because of the parking situation! see below) The not-so-great: - The parking lot is tiny. We were 2nd in line to wait for a parking spot, thankfully we didn't have to wait more than 15 minutes. However, hubby got antsy because there was no telling how long we'd have to wait. It was WORTH the wait though! - The hike down is steep, especially right at the top. You will want one or ideally BOTH hands free so that you can grab onto the ropes on the sides to help yourself get down, and then haul yourself back up when you're leaving the beach. I don't think our 4yo daughter could have walked down by herself, but I think our 7yo daughter would have been OK. - The waves aren't the most kid-friendly - they're pretty strong. (The waves are fine for teens or adults though. Kids could go in the water with an adult close by, but you just wouldn't want kids to sit in the shallow water as they could get knocked over) read more

This beach is definitely worth your while. It was one of my favorite beaches in Kauai. There are only 8 parking spots reserved for this beach so it is first come first serve. I understood why it was called hideaway beach because this trail was hidden and you do have to go through some muddy steps on the trail. Although there are ropes to help you climb. This is a very nice and secluded beach, and it seems to be great for snorkeling. The people who went snorkeling said that they saw turtles and a lot of different kinds of fish. The water is also quite calm. The hike down is not too bad because the ropes really help. My 78 year old sister managed without problems and it took no more than 10 minutes. It's also a great spot for watching sunset. The biggest problem is parking, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars. There are really just 8 spots! We were lucky we lived at Bali Hai Wyndham Resort and it's walkable, a little over a mile away. read more

The Trail - starts from from the sidewalk to the beach , (see pic of start- with construction site and public parking is hazardous at the beginning Slippery, ropes assist but they are various lengths, widths, AND muddy. The concrete steps are irregular and don't go far only the top 10%. Then you'll use ropes & tree roots to slow your descent! Wear tennis shoes with traction or boots. We kayaked to this beach as part of a kayaking & snorkeling tour with Kayak Hanalei (awesome tour by the way... definitely check them out!!!). After landing our kayaks on the beach, we geared up for snorkeling. The water was clear and we saw lots of fish and our guide even showed us an octopus he found. We did notice turtles on our way to the beach. We had our lunch on the beach too which was nice. There were several others on the beach. I noticed you have to climb down a path to get to this beach as well. Nice beach, great for snorkeling. read more

If you can get to Hideaways Beach, then it is well worth your time! There are only 8 parking spots in the public access lot, and no, you cannot park on the side of the roads in Princeville or any other private parking lot (unless you are staying there for the night), otherwise you risk getting towed and/or a $150 fine. If you can walk over from where you are staying, that is a huge plus. Indeed, the beach is hidden from view when you first arrive at the area, and then you have to descend carefully on steep steps though there are huge ropes to help stabilize you as you are going down or climbing back up. There were quite a few groups at the beach when I stopped by, though Hideaways is not very big to begin with. You can snorkel, relax on the beach in the sun or under the many trees that provide shade, plus even catch a sunset at the end of the day. Best to bring both hiking shoes and beach sandals. read more

This was my favorite beach in kauai! It has crystal green waters, perfect reefs for snorkeling, soft sand, and not a lot of tourists. I actually found this beach when I went on a canoeing and snorkeling tour. I probably wouldn't have found it if it weren't for the tour. Anyways, to get here, search the st. Regis hotel near the hanelei bay (which is the second best beach in my opinion). Just before you arrive at the gates to the hotel entrance, there's a smaller public parking lot. Park there if you have space. If not you'll have to park a bit far back out on the grass because public parking is very very limited. I suggest coming early around 8. Right next to that tiny parking lot is a warning sign and a little dirt path that leads to the bottom where the beach is. Hold onto the ropes and careful not to fall. You'll hike down about 8 minutes and you'll arrive! Anyone can do the hike. There are no restrooms btw! Bring snorkeling gear, towel, sunscreen, and food! read more

Almost don't want more people to know about this gem, but alas, word seems to be getting out. On your way down, clear blue waters where you can see to the bottom of the ocean floor. Go early in the morning to grab a parking spot (only about seven) and wear good shoes. Also, the earlier you are, the more fish you will see The hike down is almost not doable if your hands are not free to hold the ropes. I saw a family with a baby and the dad was carrying tons of items for a picnic in flip flops...they really struggled. However, if you're somewhat in shape and prepared it, the cautionary journey down is rewarded once you're in the water. About ankle deep, I was already surrounded by fish. Hideaway Beach was recommended by someone at our resort and we are so glad we went here. This beach is paradise. My only two downsides of this beach is the parking (recommend getting dropped off or going very early) and the path down (super steep and tough). Aside from those two setbacks the upside makes is so worth it. The beach has shade to retreat out of the sun and the water is crystal clear. The water is both great for swimming and snorkeling as we saw tons of turtles. Each time we went out snorkeling we found turtles (found a pod of 6 together with baby turtles). This is definitely an all day beach trip. Make sure you pack shoes to walk the trail as it's very treacherous. This is a must see beach in Kauai and easily our favorite. read more

It requires strong legs and knees and an I'm going to do this attitude". The climb down is short and steep. The footing is tricky. Wonderful little secluded beach just outside the St Regis. Look for the small walkway right before the entrance to the St Regis parking area, next to a small parking lot of maybe 8 cars and the adjacent condos. There is a bit of a descending walk/hike down which isn't too difficult especially if it's dry but does require some careful steps and use of the handrail/ropes. Maybe a 5-10 min walk each way. Would caution if it has been raining, the way down can get pretty muddy and slippery which would change the game! Walked down in tevas but saw some surfers come up barefoot and carrying their boards with no problems. Beautiful clear water and nice soft sand. Not a huge beach so could feel crowded quickly if there were a bunch of people. Parking seems difficult if you are coming in from outside but if you are staying at the st Regis or any of the adjacent properties in Princeville, would definitely walk over and check it out! read more

This place is beautiful and great for snorkeling. We went twice. The first day was not so busy and the atmosphere was good. Only there were People smoking pot and due the winds it carried all over the place. Second day: VERY busy, on a Wednesday (day of this review). We got annoyed because there were sooo many teenagers / college age people. We again smelled pot and also saw lots of people scarfing down alcohol everywhere. Love this beach. We enjoyed chilling in the water and were lucky enough to have sea turtles visit us. There is shade during the day on the upper part of the beach so we could enjoy the sun and then escape it and just watch the waves and listen to the surf crash. We also enjoyed this beach in the evening to watch the sunset. Had the place to ourselves. It is a steep descent to get down to it. There are ropes to help guide yourself down but def recommend wearing some decent shoes to get you in and out especially if there has been rain. There are also deep holes along the trail near the beach where the ground has eroded, some of these are hidden by leaves, watch your step. read more

If I'm ever washed up on shore, this is what I imagine it to look like. TINY pocket of sand with the most pristine blue waters and beautiful trees behind me. Max occupancy is like 30 without feeling people are in your space. This beach is very quiet and secluded, and you have to trek down a very steep hill to get here. The coolest part is actually the walk down. There's a rope for safety, especially if it's slippery and muddy. And thank goodness I was wearing tennis shoes on the way down not flip flops. The beach parking lot is literally for 8 cars, so if it's full, you can get free valet at the Princeville resort. (Gratuities accepted of course). And while you're at it, step inside that beautiful resort with the most breathtaking views of the island. Only one review for Hideaways? I guess it's cuz it's so....HIDDEN AWAY. I know: grooooan. It *is* pretty hidden, tho, and off the main drag a ways. You have to drive to the end of Princeville Resort, then look for a little red dirt path just beyond the tennis courts. Follow the steep, somewhat treacherous trail (rendered slightly less treacherous by the addition of handrails and ropes) down the bluff to find yourself on this tiny gem of a beach. Honestly, it's barely big enough for a dozen or so people with their beach towels (OK, that may be a slight exaggeration), but it's one of the better swimming and snorkeling beaches we've found. The coral teems with tropical fish, and sometimes you can find sea turtles meandering the channels. Calm, clear water. Not too crowded. Plenty to see with your snorkel and goggles. Good spots to nap in the sun. An excellent place to feel like you've found your own private slice of paradise. If it were a few feet deeper and a bit easier to get to, it'd be ideal. read more

This beach sucks. Don't come here. There's even a dangerous part where you need to climb down using a rope, so make sure you avoid this beach and look elsewhere. Tell all your friends to avoid this beach too. There are only about 12 parking spots, so if you can't find one, make one (or valet). I made the steep walk down in flip flops, but do be careful. The waves were intense that day due to storms further out so it was difficult to snorkel and stay safe. Sadly I did not see any turtles. The sand is coarse, but it's a lovely small stretch and not terribly busy. It's not as secluded and quiet as many think. Plenty of people were at the beach area. Hideaways beach was by far our favorite beach. We stayed on the north shore and only went to beaches on the north. Parking can be tricky. There's a very small lot that's easy to miss. There were cars parked illegally, kind of half in the lot half in the street and a car parked on the grass that we saw being ticketed, so beware. We made several drive-bys waiting for a spot but then pulled into the tiny lot and just waited for someone to leave, which eventually someone did. To us, the hike down was not a huge deal. Of course we saw others making a dramatic event out of it. We were advised by someone coming up as we were headed down, that it wasn't a good idea to bring the little ones down. Oh please. We had 4 adults, 2 toddlers, a 9 yo and handfuls of stuff. If the trail is wet it'll be quite slippery. I suggest walking down barefoot, but I did most hikes on the island barefoot. If you slip you could definitely get hurt. There's a rope, use it. We got there late afternoon and by sunset we were the only people there. It was amazing. Swimming/wading/snorkeling was good. We saw several sea turtles. It's also a great spot to watch the sunset from. read more

First there's barely a place to park. After the last condo complex and before the St Regis there is a teeny tiny parking lot that holds about 8 cars. However, there's never a spot. You might have to risk it like we did and park in one of those complexes and live on the edge. Now onto the trek down to the beach. It was not too bad and I'm no athlete... HOWEVER, going up was a different story. Going down I wore sneakers but going back up, I felt more comfortable in my bare feet. The "stairs" we're quite steep and slippery. And not wearing shoes, you were able to feel the ground much better. Now about the beach... It's gorgeous! But I remember 10 years ago when we were here, there was nobody on the beach...now it was packed. Kids, family and TEENS!!! The snorkeling was fun and there was a bunch of gorgeous fishies showing us what they've got. I gave this place only 3 stars because it's no longer a hideaway and the hike down. :( read more

OMG! This has to be one of my favorite beaches, mostly because the trek to get down there was so much work. The "trail" is steep and you probably should be in decent physical shape! It starts off as steps with metal handrails, then it turns into a steep little hill that you have to navigate downwards. By then, there's only branches and rope to aid you! At this point I had to take off my sandals and go barefoot for better grip. Hehe! We finally made it down and my first glimpse of the beach was magical. Maybe it was all that work to get there. I did this hike with my husband our 2 girls (5 & 8 years old) and my 9 month old in a front carrier. We took it slow and everyone did great! There was a small section I got a little nervous on for myself, but I just sat on my bum and scooted down. The beach was 100% worth it. Reason for 4 is there are two sides to the beach. One side is a good walk down a paved road. The other is Mount Everest and you need to hire a Sherpa to carry your crap. My wife and I travel deep to a beach (towels,snorkel crap,chairs,backpack, and YES A COOLER, BEER) 30 pounds of crap, hahaha. After the first step were my wife almost broke her coxic bone on the rocks we turned around and went to the other side.
