A delicious, reasonably-priced restaurant not far from the center of Amsterdam…read more We started with the cheese plate and the steamed duck buns. Both were delicious. The cheese plate had a great variety of interesting and tasty dutch cheeses from a nearby cheese shop, plus accompaniments. Ask for the goat bleu cheese if they have it--it's not for the faint of heart, but a great combination of flavors. The duck buns are perfectly cooked, flavorful, and served with spicy marinated vegetables. We chose a reasonably-priced wine from their wine list and were not disappointed. For mains, I got the vegetable ravioli and my partner got the lamb skewers. Both were fantastic. The ravioli was perfectly cooked--not too chewy, not too mushy--and wonderfully flavored. The lamb skewers were likewise perfectly cooked and served with a delicious chutney. They also serve a delicious house-made bread sprinkled with sea salt--amazing--and house-made french fries (chips) with our meal. Both were complimentary and a wonderful touch. The entire meal--two appetizers, a bottle of wine, and two mains, plus the complimentary bread and fries--came to under €90. Highly recommend Harmsen for a reasonable, delicious meal in Amsterdam.

However being one of the few places in Amsterdam open at about 6am on a Sunday morning, we were a bit of a captive audience and I welcomed the warmth. I shared a Falafel, and a Halloumi pocket. Both were pretty lacklustre. I didn't trust the meat options. They weren't cooked well, there was a lack of salad filling and it tasted pretty plastic and fake. The coffee (cappuccino) came from a machine and had grains in it. Really not impressed, however I can get this may have been an off time as there was a huge queue and only one very tired member of overworked staff.

I was warmly greeted as I walked in. It is not a large place but felt very warm and welcoming. I ordered a gyro plate to go and was told I could wait inside or out for my order to be ready. In less than 10 minutes I was walking out the door. I really appreciated that each of my food items was packed separately. Especially since I had a ways to go before I could eat. Because it was a long walk to where I was staying, my food was lukewarm when I finally got to eat. No fault of theirs obviously. In spite of that, it was amazing. The meat was super tender and so full of flavor. I was given a large container of tzaziki that was perfect with the meat. The fries were wrapped in aluminum foil and the portion was large. The cucumbers and tomatoes in the salad were fresh. I look forward to coming back and hope I can eat in the next time. I would highly recommend it. Rush in. You will be glad you did. And it is worth the walk.

However, the location by the Brederoplein is a particularly cozy location, a little over 1km to the SW from Utrecht Centraal. Friendly staff, with patio and inside dining available - the location is in a more quiet neighborhood setting, compared to the locations in Utrecht's Binnenstad. The Brederoplein location is very convenient by bike or by bus. For those who prefer dining al fresco, the restaurant also offers blankets at no charge, making for a "gezellig" (cozy) setting on a cool autumn night. Their wine selection is better than one would expect and there is also a nice selection of cocktails and desserts. But of course, it's mainly about the pizzas, which are simply amazing.
