I go to fine dining spaces to experience something new and unexpected for the price, something that I can't get in other restaurants, and that wasn't the case here. It was not a bad menu, and it was easy to see that they care about what they're serving, but the food was nothing memorable either. Two of the items on the menu we'd just eaten at a random cafe in Nordjylland for lunch - tasted exactly the same, just an even smaller portion. The only piece of meat on the menu was the main, and it was fine, but nothing special either. And the oysters were kind of rubbery and killed by the flavor of the sauce poured over them, which I felt was a little sad. Generally, I left the place satiated and happy, but I feel like if you're promising fine dining, it's better to have fewer courses/items with higher quality than many with slightly better than mediocre quality. The wine buffet concept was a fun idea, but I doubt anything in the selection cost more than a medium range bottle one finds in a supermarket. The service was excellent and the pace was fine as well, and I would add half a star for that, if I could. Since it's a small place, the ambiance is also warm and cozy, although I again didn't notice anything extraordinary in the decor.

There is a nice parking lot across the reception, so driving is preferable in this area. There is not much else in this area though. So if you are looking for more nightlife, pay to stay in the actual Tonder city. We stayed in room 276 (I think), in the building right across from reception and upstairs. The room looked quite worn, but then the bathroom was very modern! The floors are creaky and there were many noises throughout our stay. Internet is included, but it was very spotty and hard to stay connected. This was frustrating for my husband and I since we like to stay connected. Breakfast was a more formal occasion. Sit down, with service. First they offer you yogurt with some kind of sweet topping and granola. Then usually an egg cooked with some meat or sea asparagus. Then tiered plates of cheese, hams, fruits and vegetables are served. They offer coffee and tea, juices and croissants. Doesn't look like much but its deceptively filling. Overall a nice place, especially for the more senior crowds. But not worth it for the younger group. If you are taking the train into Tonder, use the 266 or 777 Sydtrafik bus towards Hojer, earliest bus is at the train station at 6:32 am (as of my review).

Being my first time trip to Sønderborg, I decided to take a walk around this beautiful seaside town…read moreand came across Restaurant Colosseum on the tail end and decided to have an early dinner. With ample outdoor seating on a nice sunny afternoon, this looked like the spot!! The server greeted me and let me pick my table. She was warm with her greeting and spoke very good English, as my familiarity with Danish is generally awful. I order the Havneskud, I local fish dish which is breaded and topped with baby shrimp, some salmon roe, fresh asparagus and pea tendrils. Needless to say, I was very content with the meal. The flavors were fresh and the dish well prepared. If you ever find yourself in Sønderborg, put this spot on your list!
