Driving from Indiana to northern Illinois, the warning "battery not charging" turned on in my car. I thought it must be the alternator, and we moved from I-74 to country roads, slowing down, dials going wild and eventually dead, and finally coasting to a stop. We had the car towed to KCM. They said we were wrong; the alternator was fine, but the battery was dead. Since everybody we've ever talked to said it was classic alternator failure, my wife said to ask them to test again to make sure, and they said they did. They replaced the battery. Returning to Indiana during a later evening, a couple of hours out of Champaign the same warning light turned on and all the same symptoms. We got off the highway and parked at a rural school around 11 pm. The car wouldn't start back up. We called roadside assistance, but after trying for an hour, they said the only towtruck would be $350 and a long time coming. We found that Uber, Lyft, and taxis didn't serve that area. We were thinking of sleeping in the car, but some county deputies took us into Crawfordsville to a motel. A friend came out and drove us back to Bloomington, Indiana the next day. The Crawfordsville mechanic told us it was a bad alternator, just as we'd suspected. When I called KCM, they refused to refund our money. They said they'd tested, and the alternator was fine, and they'd installed a new battery. I could have installed a new battery myself, of course-- it's easy. After arguing for some time, I hung up. If the customer's wife can tell an alternator problem better than a mechanic, don't go to that mechanic. read more

As a relatively new customer, I can say that my first two visits had me wanting to return to KCM Auto Care, but my third did not. The staff at KCM Auto Care are all undeniably nice, even when you call to make an appointment, the receptionists I have spoken with have been kind and delightful. However, when I walked in the the other day to get an oil change, I was faced with three people behind the desk that were all not wearing masks. I will not be returning to KCM Auto because no matter how nice they are, the fact that every worker there chose not to wear a mask until after I requested it, was enough to make me believe that the staff doesn't feel concerned about the safety of other people. I have nothing negative to say about the services they provide, I originally went with them because of raving Reddit posts. However, even once this pandemic is over, I will not be returning to them seeing as no one seemed to take it seriously. read more

Today was so disappointing. I have given KCM Auto 5 stars previously, but today was the final straw. No one was wearing masks, no one was social distancing, and even though I was wearing a mask and trying to keep my distance, they kept approaching me without masks on. On top of that, over the phone they quoted me $140 for the service I needed. Once there, they charged me $172: an extra $11 for "shop supplies," $14 for taxes, and $7 for using a credit card. In the past, I have always thought they were honest, good mechanics, and the cheapest place around, but after today, I am looking for a new mechanic. I was having car trouble one day and I called KCM because I was referred to them from a friend. From the beginning, they were extremely nice and offered to take a look that same day. When I got to the shop, they did a thorough inspection and identified that my transmission fluid was burnt BADLY. And of course, as someone with absolutely no knowledge of cars, I had no idea what they meant. But they were kind enough to sit down with me to explain everything and tell me what I can do at this point. They really care. They offered to do everything they can to save my transmission by first replacing the burnt fluid. The cost was extremely reasonable - they didn't charge me for the initial inspection and any other unnecessary fees - just the fluid replacement. They only had time to look at the problem when I called them that morning, but they were willing to do above and beyond a simple inspection because they didn't want to send me off as I was. At the end of it all, they sent me home with a fixed car and a greater understanding about car transmissions. TLDR: amazing staff, reasonable prices, and great service. Have to update with another great experience at KCM! Had to have a bunch of work done on our jeep (we knew it was coming). KCM gave us a quote and we got it in for the repairs 2 days later. Around noon that day Jules called to update us. Turns out one part that they thought might need replacing was actually okay and just needed tightening. There was one other modifiation to the initally quoted work. Here I'm thinking: "oh no, how much more is this going to cost me?" Then Jules lets me know it's going to be about 60 dollars less than they quoted. When does THAT happen?! I'll tell you! When you take your business to trustworthy professionals! Honestly, KCM is the place to go if you have any car troubles in the Champaign-Urbana area. They do a fantastic job at diagnosing the problem and fixing it. Also, as with many other car shops, they don't try to rip you off by trying sell you extra stuff or overcharging for labor. With KCM, you get a fair price for both parts and labor. The only really negative thing I have to say about KCM is that, due to their popularity in the local community, it might take some time to get your car in and have fixed, i.e you may have to leave your car for a night or two before parts get shipped and installed, depending on the reason you are bringing in your car. However, in my experience, all the work they've done on my car has been good quality and very much worth the price. I highly recommend KCM for your auto care needs. read more

My daughter brought her car here after she slid into a curb during the last snow after Thanksgiving. Our concern was getting the car fixed in time for her to come home for Christmas. They assured my daughter, after a complete inspection, it was a damaged control arm and nothing more. They ordered and replaced the part. The car still felt off. Turns out that the tire rim was not only bent but cracked. If she had not discovered this on her own she would have driven home to Chicago on a cracked rim. That could have resulted in a blowout and caused an accident. Horrible experience. Spend a little more and get it fixed correctly the first time. read more

Everyone here is great. They are friendly, honest, and they know what they are doing. I drive a 1988 BMW which presents some problems because of how old it is. The mechanics here are very good and very thorough. They are clearly very skilled. Every time I called in, Julie gave me straightforward honest estimates of part and labor costs (which can be hard to get other places). In addition, while repairing the car, I was given clear answers and descriptions of what was wrong and what my options were in regards to fixing it. This is very important to me: They did not make me feel stupid or annoying for asking questions. They provided answers and told me when they didn't know something because ti was not included in the work they had done. I was driving on 74 the other day ran over a giant piece of metal before I had the chance to change lanes. I got it towed to KCM because it was gushing gasoline. I called up a friend who works at an auto shop asking how much their shop charges for new gas tanks. She told me anywhere from $300 - $800. KCM quoted me at $280. I had my car towed in, they could of named any price they wanted simply because I made it very clear I know nothing about cars nor what is wrong with it. They're pricing is highly competitive. I highly doubt you'll find a better deal in the area. Julie, the lady working the front desk was very friendly and helpful. She offered my girlfriend and I a ride back to the U of I campus. The owner Patrick drove us back and is a really down to earth guy. They were very prompt with their turn around time and kept me updated regarding the status of my vehicle. They noticed that my car was very low on oil and they even put in oil at no cost. Bottom line: This place is a really friend family owned business that charges less than any other shop. They have awesome customer service and really help to take care of their customers. I wish more auto shops were ran like KCM. read more

As good as it gets - Outstanding! Highly recommended, honest people! They fixed my car and I immediately drove it across the country, over 4000 miles with no problems! I was expecting to pay over $1000, they only charged me about $350 or so. Details are below: My car broke down when it was over 100 degrees outside. I had my wife, 2 cats, and a dog... and no AC since the car wouldn't start. I was stuck on 72, and I was on a road trip, moving my family from North Carolina to California. I called another auto garage first that was closer to me then KCM, and the jerks there lied to me on the phone and told me they would leave immediately to pick me up. An hour later, I called back and they still hadn't left yet. So I called KCM and talked to Julie. She had a tow truck to me in 20 minutes (from a different towing service... she called and coordinated it), and they towed me AND my trailer AND my family in one shot to the shop. Julie let me and my wife put our animals in the shop so they would stay cool, since it was so hot outside. She got her guys on my car immediately. The timing belt had slipped due to sheared teeth. KCM couldn't fix it that night, so she OFFERED ME AND MY WIFE HER CADILLAC as a loaner car! We ended up taking the shop van instead, since we had the animals, but she almost made me take her caddy anyway! Then, she made us hotel reservations at a discounted rate at a nearby hotel that was pet friendly. She let me have the van as long as I wanted. The next day my family and I hung out at the shop all day... to include the pets. Julie and her staff were awesome. They took extremely good care of us and got us out that night. Now for the bottom line... I got lucky and didn't destroy my engine valves or pistons when the belt failed. So, they got a new belt on and got me going. If any of you have experience with timing belts (mine was on an XTERRA), they are NOT cheap to fix, normally. I have done a lot of research online since this happened and have found that many people normally pay up to $1800 for the work that KCM did on my car. KCM charged me about $350. WAY less than I was prepared for. Amazing. Julie and her expert mechanics are the most honest people I've ever dealt with. I'm no ASE certified mechanic, but I have rebuilt engines and transmissions and know a lot about car engines. Julie and her guys let me watch and ask questions all day and kept me informed about everything. I cannot believe they were so reasonable with the labor costs. It would have been easy for them to screw me, because I was stranded on a road trip. If you need work, go see KCM. This is THE place you should go if you want quality service and a reasonable budget. I have tried multiple car mechanic places before switched to KCM from a friend's recommendation. Ever since then I've never had to worry too much about my car other than how to get it to KCM shop when its time has come. I have been with them for almost an entire year and have been there at least 10 times. Their mechanics are experienced and do a very decent job. They usually get straight down to the core of the problem so I only needed to pay what was necessarily. I've never had a time when I had to go back because of the quality of their job. They charge services in a very reasonable way, AND they allow you to bring in your own parts. This is particularly important because selling parts usually means a lot of profit. And bringing in your own parts you can cut your cost down by a lot. Although they say they would charge $75 dollar diagnostic fee to look at what's wrong on your vehicle if you eventually decided to not complete the fix at their place, they only charge you that if it actually took their mechanics a long time to get to the problem. Last time I had a broken sensor and it didn't take them too long to find the faulty part, it was ~$400 dollar job so I decide to drive w/o that sensor. In the end they didn't charge me a penny because it didn't take them that long to check on the car. In general, I would always trust them with their job done on my car, and would recommend them to anyone who askes me about a good place to work on his/her vehicle. P.S. If you would like to give them a try, make sure to call them and make reservations in advance. KCM serviced my transmission and quickly took responsibility for, and fixed a leak from the transmission pan. Their prices are reasonable and their service is professional. They have a waiting area, knowledgeable staff manning the front desk, and they always treat you with respect. Remember to use them for Penske truck rentals too; they were so helpful with an issue I had and Penske has higher quality trucks and often times, lower rates than U-Haul. I brought my car here after sliding into a curb during a recent snow storm. A bent lower control arm was identified and fixed; however a sizable crack and a bent tire rim were never mentioned to me, putting my car at an increased risk for a blow out. Both were readily visible to a lay person, as I had not replaced the wheel cover following the accident. No effort would have been required to identify either problem. Very disappointed in how unthorough the work-up of my car was and the fact that I left with a car that is unsafe to drive. I am taking the vehicle elsewhere to have the repair the wheel rim replaced and have the repair job they performed checked. read more
