I'm so mad at myself for not going to this place sooner and yet I live so close to it. It's such a precious and invaluable bookstore that I've always longed for. I am glad and also disappointed that this lovely little shop is across town from me. If I were any closer it would certainly be bad for my wallet. I was in the Park Hills neighborhood dog sitting this week and almost missed Kazoo Books. I took a sharp turn in because I had to check it out. The staff is engaging and pleasant and they have load and loads of books, practically everything you would find in B&N for same value or less (they have preowned books too). This place is a treasure. We attended a recent author hop event at Kazoo Books, and my husband got to meet one of his all-time favorite authors, Jacqueline Carey. I had no idea she was local to Southwest Michigan until a friend of mine shared the author event listing with me. She's one of three authors who take up an entire shelf on my husband's bookshelves, so getting a couple of her novels autographed was such a treat for him. The store carries lots of autographed copies, and lots of Michigan authors. It's also broken down into different little nooks based on interest. The annex has that antique book smell that's a total aphrodisiac to me, and is full of Classics and collections plus a little area of children's and young adult books, and there's a used book section downstairs that's great if you're on a budget. Be sure to allow time to meet the business' mascot, a gigantic fluffy cat named Radio, and ask the staff about the feline's exciting journey from Denmark to a little book store in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Also, be sure to take advantage of their blind date with a book program. You can select one wrapped book from their blind date section with $25 purchase. I have never imagined coming to this particular type of book store until I had to pickup a package from Amazon, and I must say I was taken aback by the appearances and collections of books they had there. Right away I found a book I was most interested in, and I found the prices on books were very reasonable there. I can see myself coming back to visit, I have yet to view there Photography book collections there! Great service from those that work there, and always willing to help their customers! read more

I have driven past this used book store for 15 years and never stopped in. It has zero curb appeal, but I had some books to trade in and stopped in. It is so much bigger than the small front looks and cleaner. They have a great selection of every genre. All the used books look almost new. It is well organized. As you can see from the picture, the chair and fireplace look very inviting, but I was the only person in the store. My books I brought in were in new condition, but I don't think I got a fair value. It came to about $2 a book for hard cover. I have been donating them previously and I will go back to doing that. read more

Really a fun cool place to come and browse. It is in an old house/structure so it is warm not sterile. I was able to get an old book on Kalamazoo architecture which is wonderful because my sail walks go past historic beauties. Plus the owners are very helpful. read more

Worst experience ever going into a book. Store ever. The owner was rude and obnoxious. I was in the store for ten minutes and she never greeted me, when I went up to pay she was very rude and asked me why I was buying that book. I will never go back again. read more

Adorable bookstore in a small architecturally interesting building near WMU. Quite a selection. A little bit of everything. Charming proprietors. A handsome cat runs the place. This second branch of Kazoo books is a delightful new and used bookstore. I found the selection to be quite broad, and they were willing to order anything you need. I especially liked that they marked down the price on a lot of their new books and that they drew attention to local authors. A few tips for those interested in checking it out: ** Both branches have store cats. In this store, Aztec lives in the main building. There's an annex with classic literature that's cat free. Aztec wasn't an "in your face" type of cat, a little rubbing up against my bag and otherwise it seemed content to do its own thing. ** Trade-in policy: You can use trade-in credits toward 100% of the price of used books or 50% of the price of new books. You do have to pay the sales tax on all books (can't use credit). For example, if you have $10 in credit, you can buy a $5 used book with trade-in credit, but would have to pay an extra 30 cents or so in sales tax. The other wrinkle is you have to pay the publisher's price on new books if you use your credits. They mark down the price on many of the new books - e.g., $20 for a booked marked $25 by the publisher - so if you wanted to use your credit you would use the $10 credit and then pay the extra $15 plus sales tax. ** Trade-in Credit Tracking: They do this on computer, which is awesome! No more losing the little slips that have your used credits on them (like I used to do with Green Apple Books in SF). ** Genre Books: If you're interested in a particular genre, it's worth calling first to ask which branch has a better selection. I like fantasy, and while the selection here was good, they told me they have much more fantasy at their Clarendon location. Great vibe. The staff there was friendly and helpful. Yeah! What a little gem! I had never been in here until today, but had driven by it and didn't really ever stop in because it looked a little dusty. I'm so glad that I came in today! They had a great selection, and the staff was really kind about recommendations. I was listening in to the conversation between the owner and a man who was in looking for a novel for his 14 year old daughter, keyword: angst. The owner was awesome about pointing him in the direction of Stephanie Meyer and John Green. They also have a lovely little area with the table and a chair by a little fireplace to read in the store if you want to. And they do fair value on the book exchanges that you bring in. Although they're only looking for quality books that will actually sell, which explains why their stock is so good. read more

Kazoo Books is wonderful. It is a shopping gem in Kalamazoo that I always bring visitors to. They have an ever expanding collection, they are involved with readers in the community, and they put the extra touches to sell products that many places may not. For instance, they have expanded into a comics section in their annex. I am not a huge comics guy (but I appreciate them) but I appreciated how they packaged editions together and sold them at a flat price that is totally reasonable. For instance, they had a collection of the highly sought after DC Crisis on Infinite Earths for an unbelievably low price. The staff are friendly and somethimes they are open to chat. I like rare and weird books and theyve got that too. I never feel judged for buying that super nerdy sci-fi novel, a cheap pulp novel for the cover, or that next gem for my non-mainstream spirituality/psychology collection.
