Looking for that perfect dining place with breathtaking views in the Hunter Valley? I highly…read morerecommend Epicure Café. This café is nicely nestled and hidden amongst nature's beauty. There are both indoor and outdoor covered terrace dining areas, overlooking a large dam. We wanted something simple, yet delicious for lunch, and as a family we selected the good ol' fish 'n' chips. But our dish wasn't your ordinary fish and chips that you would buy at your local fish 'n' chips place, this was cleverly accomplished with a twist of sophistication to tantalise your taste buds. But let me start from the beginning. When we arrived, we were greeted by a friendly waitress there immediately and showed us to our table - we were impressed with the table size as well, wide enough and comfortable for plates and arm room. We started with warm sour dough bread that included extra virgin olive oil, home-made dukkah and caramelised balsamic - ever so delicious, love warm bread. A perfect start, that commonsense tells you that you wouldn't be disappointed with lunch. Okay, our fish 'n' chips arrived, served irresistibly on a plate - three decent sized fish fillet pieces covered in herb and white wine batter with aioli and French fries cooked to perfection! The batter was so light and crispy and dipping it into the creamy aioli gave that impact I was looking for! We also had a very tasty salad on the side - the taste was so fresh and appearance was so colourful with your tomato and cucumber pieces, red onion sliced finely, and your green leafy lettuce (local produce) in a beautiful vinaigrette dressing. The chef even made time to come out to see if we were satisfied with our dishes - I never had that happened to me before! The meal filled us up, we couldn't go for desserts. However, there is a variety of cakes displayed inside a glassed refrigerator within the dining area taunting you to choose if you have enough room - all homemade of course. This café is a must to dine at if you're looking for a delightful, delectable, delicious lunch with amazing views. Or perhaps breakfast or a cuppa coffee or tea with a piece of their homemade cakes? Opened 7 days from 9am to 5pm. I highly recommend this café for couples, families or friends - great food, great service with amazing views and relaxing atmosphere.

The menu was primarily seafood, also not a surprise. I decided to order a salad, not really in the mood for seafood. There was roast cauliflower, steak, chicken Parmesan, and various pizzas in addition to fishy dishes. The place was also packed, so I was glad we got an outside table. I thought my salad was delicious. It had fennel and Parmesan cheese shavings over the greens. I don't know what the greens were, but everything went well together and it was a generous portion. I had second thoughts about salad when I saw the amazingly presented entrees my dining companions had selected. After starting out with a beautiful Bloody Mary, my daughter-in-law had a crumbed dory burger with chips(fries in the States). It had two fish patties coated in herbed crumbs and she said she almost always ordered it, it was so good. It looked delicious but I stuck with my salad. My son had beer-battered flathead fish and chips. It was perfect with crunchy, lightly browned coating covering flakey white fish. I snagged a few of his fries which were also perfect. Prices in restaurants are always higher than in the U.S., but how likely are we to find fish like dory or flathead on the menu? Additionally, waitstaff in Australia are paid a living wage and don't rely on tips.

Expectation is only ever going to land you in trouble. We'd been meaning to try The Hop Factory…read moreduring our last two visits to Newcastle and on the hottest day in November for the past five years, we figured it was as good a time as any. But oh expectation. Having crushed on Hop's typography and branding for so long the actual experience left me firmly sitting on the fence. If craft beer floats your boat you'll probably find a few drops to indulge with here. The selection was quite great for a beginner. The menu is US-influenced diner food with a dash of Aussie casual aires and graces. Our lunch time special cheese burgers on a brioche bun were a tidy $12 ($3 extra for the one gluten free burger). This is a burger easily held and consumed in one hand. No spillage. Let's call it the compact cheeseburger. It was all a little pedestrian for my liking and could have been something special with the addition of pickles. Maybe I've got to stop holding all burgers against the cheeseburger at Gerard's Bar in Brisbane. In any case, should you be wanting a place to eat suitable for all budgets, for all the family from your meat-and-three-veg loving Uncle Reg to somewhere for a lads night out then take a gander at Hops Factory on Darby St.
