Dr Igawa and staff rank right up there with the best mainland offices I have been to over the…read moreyears. You're very lucky if you can get this relatively young guy as your dentist. I've had a LOT of work done here in the last year and I'm very happy with the health, function, and appearance of Dr Igawa's dental work. TIP: for new patients, they may be booking 6 months in advance so if you do not have a Hawaii dentist yet, don't wait to get one when you have an emergency, go ahead and book an appointment for a cleaning now... so if you have an emergency at some point ...you can get seen faster instead of having to go to some random dentist for your emergency. Of course, I didn't do that..... I dilly-dallied about choosing a new Hawaii dentist until I cracked a tooth and needed a dentist PRONTO. I asked a friend in the big island dental profession (but not general dentistry) who HE would choose if he needed a dentist in Hilo. He recommended two dentists, one of whom was booking new patient appointments a year in advance, and Dr Igawa, whose wait time was (only!) 6 months for new patient appointments. So I made the appointment with Igawa and asked for any sooner cancellation and luckily they actually got me in the office in a few weeks. I already knew that beyond my immediate emergency, I needed a lot of work I had been postponing including multiple crowns and finishing an implant that I had started on the mainland, so I wanted somebody really good. I also wanted the work to be cosmetically thoughtful and reasonably priced. Dr Igawa and his staff has been outstanding. Of course a great deal of the credit for the good experiences I've had here go to his hygienist and receptionist, who are truly a dream team. The best! Things I particularly like: -they keep appointments promptly and never keep me waiting -they're always pleasant -if something doesn't go exactly as planned (which will inevitably happen when you are doing lots of complicated things) Dr Igawa took immediate responsibility and fixed the issue quickly at his expense with no "hemming and hawing." -prices are not outrageous and they were very kind about making a payment plan for me -Dr Igawa regularly goes to advanced training dental classes and conferences and seems very up-to-date on the best new procedures and materials -Dr Igawa actually did my cleaning himself, which was the first time I had a dentist do that. - when I asked him about other technologies that other dentists were advertising, he had very thoughtful and persuasive answers why sometimes the "latest thing" you see advertised is not always the best. - even when I have asked about doing extra procedures, he has been very candid about talking me about of it and staying focused on the most important work first instead of selling me stuff I didn't really need. -when I have questions he takes the time to really explain it What I don't like: not enough car magazines in the waiting room :) Dr Igawa trivia: he's apparently a top golfer on the local circuit

I'm sure he's a great dentist. I was just referred by a colleague of his on Oahu. His receptionist…read morelaughed and said no new patients. I told her I had a quick emergency she didn't inquire what the emergency was, she said they already had 3 emergencies they were trying to fit in. Didn't offer any help or suggestions. No Aloha no kindness. I'm sure Dr Igawa will talk to his colleague at the dental school at some point and hear how people are treated on the phone. It's sad.

I waited and waited for cancellations or earlier appointments, but the pain was unbearable and I had to see a go to the other side of the island to see a different dentist to work on my tooth. Unfortunately, my dentist had a stroke and was unable to practice any longer. When I came back to this dentist August 2026, they made me an appointment, then 2 days later the office supervisor Rochelle called me back and told me that they would be cancelling my appointment, not according to my insurance PPO (because you can switch to any dentist in network at anytime according to HMSA) but because I went to a different dentist and that is against their "office policy," to go and see another dentist when you cant get seen sooner. She hung up on me initially and told me that I should go to another denstist I am more comfortable with, not sure what that means considering I would not be calling to get an appointment if I was uncomfortable. Terrible customer service. I wouldnt want to come back at any point in time and Hilo is a small community ill make sure all my family and friends are aware of this awful experience. My current dentist had a stroke recently and can do longer work on patients and because I went to them for availabilty purposes I can no longer be seen at Island Ohana Dental according to the office manager. Shame on you folks.

I really liked this dental office and I have been to quite a few over the years. Unlike other…read morereviewers on this page I am actually going to review the business based on ethics, professionalism and sanitation. Not about the location of a bathroom. First and foremost the office appears extremely well kept. I am disappointed with the reading material they offer, each time I visit it is the same magazines. I am tired of reading the same article about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. When I was escorted to the back the rooms also looked well cleaned and there were no apparent hazards to my health that made me nervous. The doctors and nurses all appeared to be well groomed and healthy themselves. Secondly, I appreciate that they call back quite quickly, if there are ever any hiccups in scheduling they usually never have to move me but an hour or two around my previously scheduled appointment. They were very clear and upfront about what my insurance covered and what it wouldn't and communicated with me to make sure I consented with the proper x-rays and treatments. Recently, I went in to get my bottom wisdom teeth removed and I am very happy with my experience. The specialist is flown in from Oahu once a month and I really enjoyed his methods and I felt very comfortable.I specifically enjoyed that they didn't require that I was put under for the procedure. This is huge brownie points for me because any doctor that automatically jumps to the conclusion that you need to go under is not a doctor I recommend to anyone. The main reason I gave this establishment 4 stars instead of 5 is because upon my discharge after my wisdom extraction I was not informed of a condition called 'dry socket.' On day four of my healing I was in so much pain that I blew through the pain meds they prescribed me and was still in tears. Thanks to a coworker who told me about the condition which prompted me to google and call back to arrange an appointment to follow up and verify my condition. Sure enough I had 'dry socket' and was immediately seen within the hour by the doctor which was very much appreciated. I felt relief from my pain within 4 hours and had no need to take further pain medication after treatment for the dry socket was completed (appointment took 15 minutes). Overall, I am very happy with this business and I will be a returning client. However, I will take it upon myself to ask a few more questions to make sure I am prepared for anything in the future after any procedures are done. I just wish someone would have told me about potential issues before hand which would have saved me from significant pain.

They also wanted to numb my gums unnecessarily and did extra x-rays. When I later went to Kea'au Family Dental, my insurance did not cover the extra x-rays, and I had to pay $120 out of pocket. I also had to pay a neighbor four separate times to drive me there and back. At Kea'au Family Dental, the exam and cleaning were completed in one visit. This experience felt like over-treatment and unnecessary expenses. Sharing to help others make an informed choice.

I picked this practice because they are the only nearby dentists participating in a discount plan offered through my AARP Medicare supplement plan, but I'm going to switch even if it costs me more. First of all, the place is a virtual factory: From the big, sparse waiting room to the seemingly endless rows of cubicles where exams and treatments are done, the whole place has a bit of a mass-production feel to it. I could tolerate that if it weren't for a recent, frustrating experience. Since there's no access to fluoridated water in Hilo, my dentist -- Troy DeDecker -- prescribed a prescription-only high-fluoride toothpaste. Seems reasonable, but it's not covered on my prescription plan, so I have to pay full retail of $23 for a very small tube. Ouch. But my drug plan said they could have the prescriber fill out a simple form to add it to their formulary, and they helped me fill out the part I could do, which didn't actually leave much for him. I then needed to get him to basically check a couple boxes, sign and send it in. No biggie, right? Wrong. I dropped off the form at their office about 2 weeks ago, and the front desk person said they'd make sure Dr. DeDecker took care of it. After a week and a half with no word, I checked with my insurer, who said they hadn't received it. I didn't have time to follow up immediately, but the next day I called Hawaii Family Dental. I was left on hold for 5 minutes and got cut off. I called back, was on hold for another 10 minutes and gave up. The following day -- now 2 weeks past the original request -- I finally reached a live human. She checked and told me that Dr. DeDecker doesn't fill out those sorts of forms, but has the hygienist do it. Would I like to have her fill out the form and send it in? I'm like -- what??? You didn't just do that automatically, but instead sat on it for two weeks and didn't say anything to me? I was flabbergasted -- had I not followed up, presumably nothing would ever have happened -- but the person I was talking to didn't seem to understand why I was unhappy. After a couple minutes of back-and-forth I said, "When I brought the form in, I was told it would get filled out and sent in." The woman I was speaking to responded, "No, you weren't told that" -- which was a flat-out lie. That was the moment I lost my temper -- which, admittedly, was a bad move -- and yelled, "Yes I was!" She responded, "I won't be yelled at," and I answered, "I won't be lied to" -- at which point we mutually hung up on each other. Utterly ridiculous. I'm outta here.

(I would have preferred to stand outside the room while they shoot the image and be his advocate since he is a minor. By the time they invited me back the dentist was arriving. When asked how the cleaning went, I was told they don't clean kids teeth (no scaling, polishing or flossing). Then the fluoride treatment was pretty awful looking which they said would fall away over time. Then, I wanted to make my child's next appt with the dentist at a different location since he's only in this office 1 day per week and they insisted since we got established at Prince Kuhio plaza so we had to keep coming back there. (It's a day I work and was an unforeseen circumstance that I could be there on a Monday to begin with. Once we got home, I checked my child's teeth, he still had terrible calcium deposits on the backside of his lower teeth. Then, I called to ask the dentist to do the job he billed the insurance for, and on 2 separate occasions I got put on hold for 7 and then 10 minutes until I hung up because nobody came back to speak with me and no surprise, nobody called me back. My child has been going to the dentist since he was 2 and has had a hygienist clean his teeth every visit, including scaling and flossing. BTW, no Velcro blanket to strap him down either. He's a great little patient. (I know at least one dentist office in Hilo that wont let parents go back with their kid after age 7 and they use restraints if needed...is that even legal?) Hawaii Family Dental billed my insurance, with the EOB stating I may owe $500+. When I called billing they say I owe nothing. Not sure what's going on there... Oh- and it took 6mo or more to even get an appt with Hawai'i Family Dental. Sorry to say- I would NOT recommend this place.
