Since my review in 2016, the customer service department of Kaufman Fuel has gone down drastically. They used to call or write to schedule late summer tune-ups, schedule them within a week or two and then follow up with a reminder of the service call. Now each customer is own their own to schedule and must be home when the service person comes. I made an appointment for a preseason tuneup, which was scheduled six weeks out in November, and missed the service person window, fined over $100 for not being home (later retracted), and rescheduled for February, three months late, despite purchasing an expensive service contract, which includes the tune-up costs. Kaufman offers incentives to new customers, but treats theri long term customers with distain. After I wrote the review above, I received a note and call from Kaufman, which resolved my problem within a few days, including am apology, so I accept their apology and change my rating. read more

We've been using Kaufman Fuel for all of our heating oil and furnace repairs & maintenance for 34 years. They have provided excellent service in every possible way. Yearly furnace cleanings & repairs as needed have always gone flawlessly. Emergency repairs are easy to obtain. Great employees on the phone for scheduling or billing. Called for one time delivery and they wanted to bill each tank separately. No other oil company has ever done that. They billed an estimated amount and told me they would adjust it later. WE SHALL SEE. I am very skeptical of this outfit. I am carefully monitoring my fills and I have installed an ultra sonic gauge so I know what to expect. Based on my conversation with the salesperson, who was very ignorant and made me repeat everything at least three times, I have no confidence in these people. I fully expect I'll have to file a complaint with my credit car company to get my refund. Choose another company. Just received my 4th cancellation call from Kaufman Fuel for a simple cleaning of my oil burner! They have now pushed my preventive cleaning another 4 weeks out til January. So my plan to have a pre-season cleaning in order to have my system run efficiently during the winter season is not happening! Why pay for a service contract when you can't get service! If they don't have staff to clean prior to season how do they think it will happen as we get deeper into the winter...expecting I'll get another cancellation in January. Once again, extremely poor business practices. Apparently my service contract expired and I wasn't aware. I checked my email, which I don't check on a regular basis, to see an email from Kaufman asking me to contact their office. I called and spoke with the service rep who said they were trying to contact me via phone & email. I told her I just checked my email but never received any calls as I double checked my call history. She said our contract had expired, they made a delivery, and I owe them a balance. My previous oil rate was locked in @ $2.79 a gallon and the new rate is now $5.79 a gallon for a grand total of $1300.00! I said I never would of approved a delivery at this rate since my contract had expired. She became very rude, defensive, and argumentative. She put me on hold for about 15 minutes and said a manager would be calling me back. 2 months later and I'm still waiting for that phone call. This is the true definition of EXTORTION! I'm outraged to say the least. Don't do business with this "SHAKE DOWN" company. We gave them the new business with our new furnace install that they screwed up and their service techs have been utterly clueless and unprepared. I renewed with Kaufman in November and shortly after had issue with heat. They came to repair it but then said this service was also my oil burner heating service as well. I said they had been at my home to clean the unit in March and wanted to wait one year, at the end of the season, for another cleaning They refused. In addition, I lost heat yesterday afternoon and it took two hours, and several calls later, for someone to respond. The service representative was very good and came within the hour, the issue was electrical and he was unable to repair it. A very nice man and very professional. However, Kaufman is understaffed and makes their emergency technicians manage too many clients and other administrative responsibilities. It is not client oriented and just focuses on selling oil. If you phone for oil delivery, the phone is answered immediately and delivery scheduled shortly. They need to realize that client satisfaction is important. read more

We inherited this provider when we purchased our first home. Yes, the initial rate was great, as the tank was bone dry. They came out promptly and did provide support as part of the service contract when we were having with the boiler. My main concern is the billing. We do not consume a lot of oil, so i did not appreciate the automatic refill even when there was more than half of a tank at the end of the season. Furthermore, our Budget Plan bill keeps going hire, with out anyone being to clearly explain what this is for. Have spoken to 3 different people and get 3 different answers. Basic math, we consumed/received X and paid X, but our bill keeps going higher. Not satisfied, and unfortunately, can't cancel until the balance that we do not understand why we still have is paid. Errol, the Kaufman technician was excellent in performing the service, while explaining the details as he worked. He left the wall unit clean enough to eat off and inspired confidence that the service had been performed knowledgeably and completely. Their customer service is terrible, they don't try to please their customers only concerned with delivering as much fuel as they can in the shortest amount of time. They came out every 3 weeks even to deliver 40 gallons while my tank was already full. I have a contract with this company through October 2022. I got a full service contract and paid around $600 for it. I have the boiler insurance and boiler cleaning and some how I was charged $200 extra for delivery fee. Never paid that before. But I have a forced air system which works with my boiler and AC unit. On December24th my my forced air unit has been shutting down and not having heat. I made about 4 service calls since then to get it fixed. I had omar,John,Ted and another John came to my home to fix but couldn't find a problem with my boiler or the forced air unit. No work was done from all 4 men but I was charged over $300 for their visits. The problem is still an issue and have had heat in my home since January 27th. I didn't call this company back to come out and look at it because it never gets fixed and I keep getting charged about $150 everytime they come and do nothing to fix it. I will pay my oil bill and not ever sign back a contract with your company. Please don't ever send out one of your incompetent technicians to my home again. BUYER BEWARE!!! DO NO USE THEM. I don't have too much experience with oil companies since I just bought a house, but this was the first oil company I went with and boy was that a mistake. I shopped around for quite a while, and finally decided on Kaufman when they told me they could offer me a CAP RATE of $1.99, with a initial price that was much less than it's competitors. When another oil company I was talking to found out I went with them, they muttered under their own breathe that the price was just a way to hook in buyers. So with the CAP RATE, I was told, should the rate be lower than $1.99, I would get it for the lower rate. After my first load, I got a bill for my second load, and can you guess the price? $1.99/gallon. I called the company to see how much the going rate was for oil, I apparently spoke to their sister company who does one time oil deliveries, and their price was lower than $1.99. When I brought this to Kaufman's attention, they said that is not the automatic delivery oil price, and they had no answer as to how I am to then check what the going price for oil was that day, I guess I had to just trust that oil was either at that price or more than $1.99 that day. And the thing I was paying extra for? The luxury of not spending the 5 seconds it takes to see how much oil is in my tank in the basement... WOOHOO!!! When I demanded satisfaction, and/or requested them to let me out of contract because they weren't following up on their end of the bargain, I essentially got a "tough luck" kind of excuse from upper management. 'F' for customer service. Even the initial employee told me that what was being done to me was WRONG... but not upper management. Well, it may be hard to believe, but I paid $1.99/gallon for the whole year I had them... sounds more like a FIXED RATE!!! Typical bait and switch. Oh, and when I went to cancel my service with them at the end of the year, I sent a letter as per our contract, received a phone call from them confirming that they had received my letter, and they even tried to throw a sale pitch in. I was told at the point my contract would be over, but received a letter in the mail that my oil delivery would continue unless I notified them. Called a SECOND TIME, was told that they didn't have that information on file, and that my service would be discontinued, just to get a bill in the mail for $500 for a continuation of my service contract. I called a THIRD TIME, and they told me they would look into it. I can't believe it, but by the end of it, after about 5 phone calls and a few emails in which I forwarded a copy of my request to terminate my contract at the end of the year, I finally cut my ties with them... supposedly. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere, or take a chance at www.cashheatingoil.com. I use them now. At the end when Kaufman was trying to sign me into a $2.49 CAP (aka FIXED rate), I declined... I just looked it up, oil on that cash heating website is $1.93/gallon. I have a 330 gallon tank, so if I had to completely fill up today, I would save $184.80. KAUFMAN IS A JOKE read more

After an introductory price, Kaufman fuel said they would deliver oil at a fair market price. Every delivery since has been $.40-.50cents over market value. They charge more than auto diesel, and will not return calls when questioned about it. Horrible customer service!! Even when I tell them to slow down their deliveries, they still ignore my request and deliver every 3 weeks!! Since its now spring and I'm changing over to gas,I ask them not to come back. They told me I would have to pay cancellation charge even though they have delivered numerous times through fall and winter. feb 21 2015 i have used kaufman for about year now. They promised a service of my system when i bought the gold package. I had my wife take a day off of work and they never showed up. Then they rescheduled which they tried to change the day of after my pregnant wife took another day off. My hot water heater never had any issues and after kaufman came to my house it has been leaking water and we have no heat.. they told me they will contact me to sales and i need a new hot water heater. i can't give a worse review of a company PLEASE STAY AWAY read more

Horrible!! Avoid these guys!! We called them for service and the big bearded guy who arrived was incredibly rude and immediately confrontational. He walked in without saying hello, started blaming us for him needing to work on a Saturday night and stormed down to the furnace. At one point he called his manager on his cell phone and I overheard the manager say "if they pay then just do it, otherwise F* them..." This company should be investigated. Their billing is so shoddy that accounting becomes a nightmare and you receive astronomical bills that make no sense upon viewing that you have to call them and go through a confusing storm of double-talk where they make you feel like you're the idiot. Their prices for oil and service are way over the average for this area, also. They're really good at sending out bills and processing payments, but explaining why they're overcharging and not mentioning the small-print, they are not. Stay away from this organization. My mother gets her oil trough Citizen's Oil Co-Op in CT and their only distributor in her area is Kaufman. Their oil delivery has been reliable and since the pricing is through the Co-op, that's been great. Their service, however, in terms of maintenance and repairs has been absolutely horrible. Some examples...: Her thermostat failed and they wanted $400+ to replace with a wireless one. Her electrician repaired the wire for $50, solving the problem. One time she lost heat and they had to come 3-4 times because they would fix one zone but screw up another, etc, and none of their technicians could figure out our system, which is basic American Standard equipment. Now her A/C failed (not their fault) but we had to wait one week in the middle of summer to get a quote and proceed with the repair because the part was under warranty from American Standard but apparently only one person at Kaufman service, the service manager, is able to quote repairs, and the company had the genius to let the only person in their A/C repair department who can quote and authorize repairs take their vacation in the middle of the summer without arranging someone to cover for them, because, of course, who would ever need their A/C repaired in the middle of summer, right? I hope their accountant goes on vacation right in the middle of tax season. A week after the service manager gets back from vacation, we finally get a quote on the repair and are told the part will take 5-7 business days to arrive. Now on the 7th business day I call to follow up and am told its 7-10 business days. My mother is elderly and going on one month now with this heatwave waiting for this A/C to be repaired, I had to go out of pocket for window units in the meantime. All this time I always have to keep calling for information, they would never call me to let me know what's going on unless I call. And she have a service contract with them for heat. That's always fun because when you call to setup the annual maintenance there's usually a 3-5 month wait. Just waiting for the co-op to hopefully very soon start offering oil from another company. The worst! I signed a contract with Kaufman in May and they came and filled my neighbor's tank in June and left the receipt in his mailbox. This, despite the fact that my house number is on my mailbox and on the house right near the oil fill spout. He called Kaufman and they said they'd "take care of it". They errantly delivered to him again in November. My neighbor wrote me a note on the receipt and left it in my mailbox saying this was the 2nd time they'd delivered to him. I called them and told them I had two concerns. 1. I didn't want to run out of oil. 2. I didn't want to pay a dime for oil they delivered to my neighbor. They said they'd look into it but told me that I would've run out of oil by now if they hadn't filled my tank. In other words, their stance was that they didn't make a mistake. I checked the gauge that night and called them the next day saying I think I was just about out of oil. Again, they showed no concern and told me they were still researching. No offer was made to send someone to fill the tank because they believed they did so in November. I again told them my #1 concern was running out of oil over the cold weekend. They said someone would be on call to fill if so, and that they'd call me on Monday once the delivery manager finished their research. Sure enough I ran out of oil over the weekend. Freezing cold house and unable to shower. Also sure enough, no call came on Monday. I called to talk to the manager on Tuesday, and they wouldn't get one for me. She just kept saying that they were still looking into it. It's now been a week since my first call and no one has gotten back to me. I'm now reporting my experience to the BBB and State Attorney General. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH KAUFMAN FUEL. They suck and they don't care one ounce that they suck. Once they get you into a contract, you don't matter anymore and they don't try to hide it. Worst experience I've ever had with an oil company. read more

Simply horrendous services and no dependability. Our heating unit was installed less than one year ago and has had to be serviced no less than six times. Our most recent bout of heat loss led to a frozen and broken water pipe with damage. I have addressed this issue many times with customer service and the company directly. They replied, " I should expect some problems with a new system"? Huh? If customer service and quality is important to you as a consumer avoid Kaufman at all costs. I have been extremely disappointed and would have faired better with my old heating unit. My next course of action is to have the unit removed and delivered back to Kaufman. read more

Called 5 times and spoke to an answering service that did not relay my message and actually told me to stop calling every 20 minutes because they were too busy. Our heating burners were serviced by Errol of Kaufman Fuel today.. He is such a conscientious technician and he goes above and beyond his call of duty. He cleaned all the filters with cleaners and water, vaccuumed the entire area and the inside of the units, caulked areas that needed caulking. I prefer to have Errol for our next service. He has a great service oriented personality. Kaufman Fuel should be proud of people like Errol. Wish all the Cos have technicians who love their job like him. read more

Avoid these Scammers!! They delivered oil to my house after my contract expired and after I have explicitly told them not to deliver anymore oil. They sent me a bill and are threatening to send me to collection services. After numerous calls with them, I've decided to take action. Just filed a complaint with Better Business Bureau. read more

Check you bills! And read your contract - above all else, do not allow them to add oil to your tank without knowing exactly what their current price per gallon is each time they fill up, unless you like paying 2x-3x market rate for your fuel. I can't say I had any complaints until I asked them to do some service when my oil burner stopped working one night. Think twice. If service is an important issue for you, don't use Kaufman. I was promised an AM service call. On 8/29 they came to deliver oil and told me that they could not because the tanks were full. Which made sense because I had turned off the heat before their previous delivery. I cancelled service via their website form. On 9/29 they "delivered" 250 gallons of oil; about half was at my contract price and half was over because it "wasn't in the contract price amount". Now, according to my contract (if they ignored my cancellation request) my contract was out at the end of November, anyway. I still hadn't turned the heat on, at that time. How could I have used 250 gallons of oil WITH MY HEAT OFF THE ENTIRE TIME?! They fed me a line of bulls*** in response to my BBB complaint and the Dept. of Weights and Measures said it's their word against mine; pay their scam bill or I have to get a lawyer and go to court. I'm a widowed mom of 4 and work and go to school full time. No time for court or money for a lawyer. (Lawyer would cost twice as much as the bill).
