I'm glad I was able to get introduced to some new restaurants and many tables offered company merch and coupons which was a plus! It wasn't overcrowded and I didn't have to wait in any long lines for samples. My only complaint is that I wish they included some type of tray to hold your samples. It was very hard carrying around those little trays of food. Other than that I had a good time and will be better prepared next year!

This past weekend was the annual Via Colori. Via Colori brings all-volunteer artists together to display chalk art by talented professional artists, emerging artists from the local high schools, and the younger ones that want to decorate a square. Proceeds from the festival benefit The Center for Hearing and Speech. In past years this event could raise $300,000+ in one weekend. Tickets were $10 a pop and had in/out privileges so you could take a break from art to visit one of the other nearby parks or restaurants and briskly sashay back into the festival whilst flashing the fashionable purple wristband to let people know you are a man about town with a mighty fine hat and matching wristband to boot. More than 200 artists found their place on the streets surrounding City Hall to work their magic with the chalks. There were some common themes like Aladdin which was very popular, as well as one Simpsons related, and several Batmen and/or Spidermen. Yelp's mural was Gizmo from the Gremlins which is always a festive throwback to classic late night (in more ways than just the one) cinema. Depending on when you visited you could see artists starting from scratch or further along with shading and final touches. $6 beers were available at the beerman's vendor stand so anything less than $10 beers at festivals means you need at least two, because nothing is worse than having to attend a social function on $10 beer night when you could have been at home with the King's ransom of Natty Light for the same price and you would have had less stares being sans pantaloons than you would out at a bar, unless it is /that/ kind of a bar. Always worth a visit to the annual Via Colori to support a good cause - there is nothing else like this in Houston.

We went the second day because of the weather and in hopes that more of the art would be completed. There are kids from middle school and high school age doing some amazing work, but the majority of art is done by adults. Each square is sponsored by some organization and then an artist does their chalk drawings in the square. Some are done as a group effort and some individually. There are artists from around the world and many have a sign saying their name and their hometown. Some of the artists make their pieces interactive and you can stand on them and take photos. As you wander around, there are vendors giving away freebies like Kind granola bars, etc... There were also a bunch of food trucks where you could grab lunch. There is even a kids area where for a donation, kids can decorate a small square of the street. It's a fun and beautiful FREE festival. Definitely worth going to.

This is not the typical festival that has thousands of people in attendance, they limited the number to create a better, more personal experience. We received a wine glass & a Wino Fest sheet for notes with the wineries in attendance as well as some educational materials to enhance our wine knowledge. Throughout the event there was live music, food vendors, and a great time! The information sheet that we received outlined each winery in attendance which we used to write down notes about each one. We learnt that unlike other festivals that charge an entrance fee for only 10 or so samples of wine, we could try all the different types of wine. This festival is designed to promote and support Texas Wineries. It was good to know that we 100% supported local TEXAS wineries.

The festival had lights on the roof of buildings and a fun show on the stage. This was the debut of the "new" trees on post oak boulevard, and they did not disappoint. They were 20 feet tall and made of twisted stainless steel with 249 LED lights on different points of the "trees". They were a very a modern take on the "Christmas Tree" and they were beautiful. The trees and fireworks were meant to be lit at 7:00 P.M., it didn't exactly go as planned, but nobody seemed to mind. Once the firework display began, the crowd was amazed, including myself. The uptown post oak tree lighting event was a sight to see and I would highly recommend.

If you've lived in Houston at least 10 years, you should attend this annual event at least once. Pros: - There is lots of parking even if you don't arrive early. The flyer also has a map of the free parking areas. - The music is good. - There are some booths, one of which lets you throw a ball through some holes in the back and you could win t-shirts, stress balls, etc... - There are police directing the flow of traffic which made leaving the area smooth. - There are lots of food options (albeit mostly unhealthy carnival type food). - The other attendees are polite (We only saw one drunk guy helped by his friends. Alcohol was not available at the event so I'm not sure how that happened.) - There are lots of places to sit (e.g. along the curb, concrete garden walls of surrounding businesses, etc...) I brought a chair for my mother, though. - The terrific fireworks show at the end was choreographed to music. - The emcees did a good job entertaining. - It was held in a fun area so you could walk around if you were waiting for the fireworks. - Some booths sold hot chocolate for only $2 when the temperatures were in the low 50s. - The food was not overpriced (except that bbq food truck selling turkey legs for $10 each). Cons: - They advertised food trucks but other than a bbq one, they were mostly generic fair food tents serving turkey legs ($8!), hot dogs, corn dogs, nachos, fajitas, sandwiches, tortas, funnel cakes, etc... - Lots of vendors were selling flashing colorful light toys that may make parents buy junk for their kids, wasting money. - I didn't see any portable restrooms. - There were strobes flashing lights. - The diesel-fueled generators powering some of the food tents were really loud and smelly.
