A beautiful walking/running/biking trail that is perfect for a long morning outing. Had the pleasure of walking this trail for nearly 4 miles and rarely ran into other patrons. The trail also has plenty of little outlets to get you closer to the water that make for a beautiful scene. A great place to spend with oneself or another!

A 230 mile long trail is really long! But the Katy is even a few miles longer! This is the longest rail to trail conversion in the country and runs from Kansas City to just past St. Charles, Mo. Much of it travels along the banks of the Missouri River so it can be very scenic. We live right next to the trail and realize how cool it is every time I ride on it. Lots of wildlife can be seen and much of the trail by us is in a tree canopy. Where else is something this cool? The Katy is a Missouri State Park and you will need to be off at dusk, but there are lots of little towns to stay in along the way. I just ride locally. I am NOT what anyone would consider a cyclist, but on the Katy in an hour it is very easy to ride 8-9 miles in an hour. There are no cars to contend with. I normally go 4-5 Miles west, then come back. It is very relaxing and in a tree canopy, cool even on a hot day. Another favorite thing is to go to old St. Charles to a coffee shop. There are people who make the Katy a week long vacation, and some travel great distances just to get here. I remind myself not to take this for granted. Oh...how did it start? A very wealth man and his wife had a vision this would be cool. It was a St. Louis couple, Edward and Pat Jones. Edward, aka Ted, started Edward Jones the financial company. He gave $10 million to get it started and pushed the State. Yes, it's great to have wealth people around..they can do a lot of good and Ted and Pat make a lot of people happy starting this State Park.

Rode the Katy Trail today for the first time from St. Charles to Weldon Spring and back to St. Charles (28 miles round trip). I live in California and this has been on my bucket list for three years to experience the Katy Trail. It was a beautiful ride along the Missouri River. One of my highlights was seeing Cardinal birds flying about! They're too quick to snap a photo of however. Thank you Missouri for allowing me to enjoy such a great day on the Katy Trail :)

Great peaceful trail. Time to enjoy nature, beautiful weather, thoughts, social distancing, and John Mayer music!!

Great trail system in the St. Louis area. I've biked parts of the trail twice & it's a terrific outdoor activity while in St. Louis. The trail is dirt/gravel, so you might get a bit dusty. The tree canopy cools you off in the sections between Defiance and St. Charles. I've riden in July (start early to beat heat & humidity) and in late September (lovely). It's decidedly less scenic just west of St. Charles, but if you do take the trail as far as St. Charles, it's a quaint little town to enjoy!

Love the Katy Trail and Frontier Park. I sometimes start my ride here and go to Creve Coure park and back. I really want to do the entire trail from here to Clinton but haven't worked up to that yet. Great Park and Trail.

Every time I came to a path fork I took the trail heading away from the interior. So, it was a delight to cover the perimeter and finally explore areas I hadn't been in before. However, the lack of trail markers--even at the forks--meant much of the time I had little idea where I was. The trail map was no help and only by checking the sun's position and knowing where the river was did I have an idea of the general direction I was headed. That was frustrating. I kept thinking how a walker wouldn't know where they were, nor how far they were from the next fork that could take them back to Bangert's entrance. Beyond that, the island's trails are fairly easy. Paths nearest the River Road and along the north are solid and mostly flat. Trails along the river are sandy with frequent dips and switchbacks. I began by heading north toward Interstate 70 and its traffic roar. Once I made the turn south and biked further from the bridge the noise subsided and the ride became more serene. However, the trail also got narrower. Trees close in and it's easy to snag a handlebar or pedal. There were a few small tree trunks across the trail--part of the fun of mountain biking--but most were level with the ground. A few trunks showed recent evidence of large trees having been cut to allow the path to run between the sections. Carey in what you need: There are no facilities of any sort here.

Would love to give this a 5 star review, but went on the Slough Loop Trail and got about a mile…read moreinto the "loop" and hit a dead end with lots of downed trees and heavy brush covering the trail, with no real way to get around. Had to backtrack and try another trail. That trail was open with no dead ends. Hopefully St. Charles County parks will clear the downed trees this winter and open all the trails once again for Spring 2022. Anyway, nice overlook of the Missouri River just south of the I-70 Blanchette Bridge. The trails are mostly wooded with several spots that have views of the river.

It almost seemed unbelievable some of the imagery stemming from these 7,000 acres of natural beauty and outdoor recreation in the heart of scenic Missouri wine county. Once you are off highway 40, it's 50-55mph WINE-dy back roads to get there. Once you get into the turn in, it's a graveled road with a trailhead to the Katy Trail. Do not even think about having a clean car upon entering this place. It will get dirty and dusty. There are also (surprisingly) random humans running in the middle of the narrow driveway leading up to the sunflower field and ending at a boat ramp. I never understood why people never stick to one side of the road while on foot amongst VEHICLES. I find my friend and we exit our vehicles to begin our mini photoshoot in the sunflower fields. I felt like Candy(wo)man as the bees tended to the sunflowers while I freaked out thinking they'd sting me with my bright yellow shirt on and black skirt. It was so blissful to see sooo many beautiful BIG butterflies fly around us. The caterpillars were on like every leaf just hanging out like the Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland. It was nature at its finest. Sunflowers for as far as the eye can see. The sounds of bees (and flies) buzzing about. I tried to relax, and we got a few non-frantic pictures of me. I will wear pants next time and try to relax more. I was invading THEIR space, not the opposite.

4/23/23: Updated this page to accurately reflect the reviews and location…read more WSCA is a Missouri Department of Conservation property left largely in a natural state. Consisting of two interlocking trails, the Lewis and Clark trails can be hiked separately for shorter walks or combined for an 8-mile trek. The trails are moderately strenuous, so good health and physical conditioning are recommended. Both trails descend into deep ravines and ascend to high ridges. Rocks, roots, and ruts make some sections treacherous. If you walk the Clark Trail counter clockwise you'll reach the high bluffs overlooking the Missouri River about 1-1/2 miles--or 30-40 minutes in. It's quite a view and worth the trek.
