The Croton Library is close to our usual NY stomping grounds, but we hadn't been, so we took one weekday afternoon to check it out. I'm very glad we did, since I think this is now my favorite library in New York, and definitely on the Top Five list period! The library looks small on the outside, but don't be fooled by its commonplace appearance. While it may lack the grandeur of others of its kin, step inside, and you'll see a gorgeous space with an ample children's section, hundreds of DVDs and audiobooks, and shelves upon shelves of adult fiction and nonfiction sections. You could easily spend all day just browsing the stacks - never mind even getting around to reading! I was especially delighted to come across a hard to find book about the making of Pulp Fiction, and enjoyed getting lost in the world of Tarantino while I sat in one of the comfy chairs they have for reading! Shout out to library page extraordinaire, Julian, for his impeccable customer service and helpful friendliness when we had a zillion questions about random and obscure books. I had some time before I needed to be to the airport, so I visited the White Plains Public Library on Martine Ave. I found a metered street spot nearby. This library is pretty large with multiple floors and was well-lit and quiet when I visited on a Saturday morning. I loved the big new book section right at the front of the main level, especially the full shelf of new cookbooks (one of my favorite genres)! They had some other really great displays, including one celebrating Jane Austen's 250th birthday and some BookTok books. I saw a seed library, teen area, even an attached cafe. I'm really glad I got to visit this library!

At 2:28 I was told I'd need to leave by 2:30 "for the high schoolers" (school gets out after 2:35). No problem, just had to wrap up a quick call for five minutes, and was re-approached by 2:32 because apparently the need to leave was THAT urgent (no signs or anything indicating that this is a legit rule). There were still 0 other people in the entire space. I'm seeing many other reviews about being treated poorly by librarians and I'm unsurprised. Avoid it here at all costs and go to Harrison. Librarians here are on a weird power trip.

This library has a great atmosphere to study or read all day…read more In my experience, I have used this library to either do work on the weekends or study for my board exams (CPA). I live close by and among the public libraries around, this is definitely my favorite. The main reading area has 4 tables that seat 4 people as well as a couple of couches. Each table has outlets, so you can plug in your laptop and do work/study easily. Wifi is free and has excellent speed! There are also individual rooms with tables that seat about 4 as well. The best thing about this library is that is has natural lighting throughout. This makes it a very good place to spend the entire day studying/working. The natural sunlight keeps the place nice and bright, unlike many libraries that have a dark and dull atmosphere. I really do believe the lighting helps with focus and mood, making it a great place to study! I choose this place over other public libraries as well as coffee shops in the area. It has a great overall atmosphere and I recommend it for all people trying to get work/studying done.

They have attractive displays in the entry area and throughout the library. There were enough signs around that made it easy for me to find the type of books I was looking for. When I was ready to check out, the librarian at the circulation desk was very friendly. I also love that their book return is a drive up one!
