horrible!!! dorms…read moresuck. no garbage room on 2nd floor. kitchen on floor 1 has food in it from last year you have to park in h lot if you live on campus which is extremely deserted and far from the dorms. they have no apartments only communal showers you have to get a mealplan. you need 72 hrs notice for a guest to come. you can only have a guest six times per month overly expensive you cant park near the building you live in the student life sucks. nobody is around. the school is broke. they provide only to go containers at the dining hall. no plates. the food options suck and are extremely unhealthy you need to purchase food from your meal plan by the meal. no all you can eat option like a normal and functioning college. they are broke they look at you crazy if you ask for a cup for water. (you have to pay for a cup) only two places on campus are open during the weekends, probably because they can't afford to open the healthy places. you have to go through three security systems to enter the dorm. yes three. you have to bug res life to approve your guest request. mold in rooms. half of my floor was wet and moldy and it was a sweet smell. affected my breathing. i reported it three times until i told them i had to move. they did move me when i asked which was a good thing. but i had to advocate for myself way too much here. you have to pay for laundry which no other college makes you do that. washers and dryers stop working frequently and there are only two to three dryers per floor for about 80 people on each floor or more. floor floods in laundry room they have no loading zone to unload your stuff from your car. if you have a ton of stuff to bring up to your room and need to park your car near founders or hudson to do so, you have to call campus safety to tell them you are doing that so they dont ticket or boot your car. (they ask for your plate number car make and model, unbelievable.) the stairs near the h lot (parking lot) can easily trip you if you are not wearing the right shoes. they are stairs with the gaps and holes in them. they dont put salt down properly. i almost fell and hit my head. you cant even use the soccer field as it is only for athletes. you have to pay extra to stay during spring break and thanksgiving break when no other college even charges for that. they just got rid of 11 programs the bad all outweighs the good. the thing that keeps me going here are the people and professors but guess what; you can find that anywhere else. also the towns are cute around dobbs ferry and close to city. that is all i have to say thats good. other than that do not come here. i hope this reaches a prospective student deciding on where to go. it should not be here.

I stopped in late in their day, so I wasn't surprised to be the only one there, but the team gave me space, answered very basic questions I had, and - gasp - LET ME TOUCH THE BOOKS. Well, 45 minutes later, I was still oohing and awing at the marvelous selection of first edition books they have to offer. This is the largest selection (aside from corporate-owned Bauman's) of rare books I've seen that include the dust jacket- a collectors actual dream. It's the biggest breath of fresh air to find a rare book store owned by a woman, and to be treated like a human being. I normally get side-eyed from rare bookstore owners and some of the conversations I've had sound like: "May I see the Portrait of a Lady in the case?" "All of these books are at least $100.00 and up." ".....I know." "Do you have any Wilde?" "The book about the woman hiking alone? That's too new to be in our shop, Barnes & Noble would have it." "I'm talking about the 1800s poet." "Oh." I take it personally because while I look like a millennial who doesn't know what she's talking about, I treasure my rare books like they're my children. Sunday stayed AN EXTRA HOUR at her store while I looked and answered all of my questions that I had, never making me feel rushed or unwelcome. After selecting a first edition Fitzgerald, she wrapped it in bubble wrap for my travels back home and gave me an updated book with all of the rare book sellers in the country.

My older son and I recently visited Ossining, New York to attend a Weir Tour. You're probably…read morethinking, "What in the world is a Weir?" First I must talk about the Old Croton Aqueduct. Constructed between 1837 and 1842, the Old Croton Aqueduct was built to supply New York City with fresh drinking water after local water resources had become polluted and inadequate for the growing population. It stretched 41 miles from the Old Croton Dam to the present-day location of the New York Public Library Main Branch and Bryant Park. It was a gravity-fed aqueduct which dropped 13 inches every mile. This means that water flowed to the city completely energy-free. 35 million gallons of water flowed into it daily. Following the completion of the New Croton Aqueduct in 1890, the old aqueduct became superseded. It continued to remain in service until it was shut down in 1955. Today, the surface of the old aqueduct is the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail: a recreational trail for pedestrians and cyclists. Sites along the old aqueduct are maintained by the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct: a volunteer organization that hosts several related tours. So what is a weir? A weir is a concrete structure built alongside or on top of an aqueduct. Their purpose was to give direct access to an aqueduct tunnel. Weir tenders could descend inside, control the water and divert it into secondary tunnels away from the main aqueduct channel. The purpose of this was to lower water levels so maintenance could be performed inside the tunnel. Six weirs were located along the aqueduct (as well as 25 ventilators). The existing weir in Ossining is the one that is open for tours. Before getting to Ossining, my son and I first stopped to see the Croton Dam. It was quite an awesome sight! Then we met up with our tour group at the Ossining Park & Rec Center where we first learned about the history of the aqueduct, the town of Ossining, and the nearby Sing Sing Prison. Then we saw the beautiful "Double Arch Bridge" before finally entering the weir and descending into the tunnel. It was a really cool experience and we sure learned a lot! We look forward to attending more tours sponsored by the Friends of the OCA in the future!

I ended up leaving with three books: two for me, both from Irish authors I'd never heard of that I'm absolutely loving so far, and one for a friend's sick two year old and her daughter LOVED it - it was a really cool book about the seasons that opened into a globe and had great illustrations. In short, I found some really special books at this really special store! It's in a great location with lots of parking but is also right by the aqueduct trail if you like to walk aka I walked there haha. Shop local : )

In addition to being really flexible with scheduling, (which was super convenient) he really helped me get exactly what I wanted out of the essays & portfolio. His fixes were spot on and really strengthened my work. They weren't just cosmetic either, we did a lot of restructuring to support the root themes of the stories and make them better. I truly cannot imagine a better experience or a more encouraging teacher. A lot of other writing teachers I've had in the past get an idea in their head of how to fix a piece and try to steamroll you into executing it, but Alex was exactly the opposite! My vision was heard and supported at every step. Alex really took the time to understand me and my pieces, and they were better for it. I credit the confidence with which I submitted my applications to Alex and look forward to working with him in the future once I finish my manuscript draft!

Each class consists of writing prompts and review of submitted work. The instructor, Alex, is very knowledgable and well versed in writing techniques and tools.
